Best dessert place and best dessert youve had in san diego?

What is your favorite dessert place and favorite dessert in SD? It could be a place that specializes in desserts, like heaven sent desserts or extraordinary desserts, over rated imo; or it could be a restaurant, with a particularly gifted pastry chef. I think the best dessert I had was by jack fisher at jacks dining room (too bad its no longer there) actually just a simple sorbet. It was a concord grape sorbet. When you took a bite of it, it was like biting into a concord grape that was put in the freezer but allowed to thaw out a bit. It brought back memories of my childhood. I dont think I have a favorite dessert place yet. Extraordinary is over priced and their boring desserts are drenched in all types of fruit puress.

What is open in San Diego on Christmas day?

There are multiple restaurants open in San Diego for Christmas day. http://www.sandiegorestaurants.com/ch...
This link has a list of restaurants open for christmas day. Also, Opentable.com usually has a listing of restaurants open during holidays. For example, they put up a list of restaurants open for thanksgiving. At the moment I do not see a list for christmas dining, but if you check later on, maybe something will show up.

Best Dish In San Diego?

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I should have stated it in the original post, that although San Diego is not really a "dining town" but relative to San Diego's culinary scene, which dish is the best.

Do you know if the tacos al pastor on kettner still open?

Best Dish In San Diego?

If you had to pick just one, what is the best singular dish you have had in San Diego? Could be an entree from a fine dining place or maybe a burrito from a robertos in a strip mall. List the dish, restaurant, and location. I think mine would be...a seared ahi tuna sandwich from blue water market and grill out on india st.

verbal praise a subsitute for proper tip?

i write this b/c of all the blogs that have a reply of what the proper tipping percentage is. I am a server at a restaurant and I am just wondering what do you think is the proper tip for standard/good service: 10%, 15%, 20%? What kind of service do you need in order to leave a tip of 20%? Also, does a verbal praise of how good service is warrant the diner to tip less? Our restaurant also has comment cards to hand out with the bill and it was a steady trend that if I received positive feedback on my service my tip for that table was not as high as I would had hoped. I stopped giving out the comment cards and my tips on tables i feel i gave excellent service to were as high as i had hoped. what are your two cents?

Tip calculator at the bottom of the bill...?

you should be careful about just doubling tip to make for 15% because not everything is always taxed at restaurants. cocktails/beers are some times tax free. notice when you order just a drink from the bar, the total is usually an even number. but say you order dinner from the bartender the bill ends up being some x amount of dollars and change, because of the tax added on, but if you just double tax then your only tipping on the food not the drink.

Paragary's Mushroom Salad

i dont have a hard copy, but i remember asking one of the cooks (i use to work there) what the dressing was and he said just olive oil and lemon juice with a lil salt and pepper. you could probably use a 1:3 acid (lemon juice) to oil ratio. if thats too sour, take a lil lemon juice out and add in some lemon rind. The mushrooms are just your white button mushrooms sliced very thinly on a mandoline, too hard to do with a knife, i tried. and the cheese is jarlsberg. and thats about it, just mushrooms, cheese, lemon, and oil.

What do Chowhounds do for a living (besides eat of course)? [old]

I am a full time student working on my B.S. and work in a restaurant on the weekends, but because of my parents (my father owned a restaurant) and upbringing I have always been interested in food and cooking. going to cooking school was a possibility out of high school years ago, but the parentals were against it so I took the traditional route of higher education at a 4-year university. It wasnt until recently I found out about CH and I find myself checking this website every few minutes looking for new posts. im addicted. even though i dont have much income, i take advantages of specials to save money but still able to get good food; happy hour, pre theater prices, lunch instead of dinner prices, friends of the industry, etc.

Recipes for starving college students?

heres a very easy recipe that i (a college student) use.

get a french bread loaf from the stores bakery or even better focacia. if youre using the french loaf, slice lengthwise in half. apply a thin layer of ranch dressing to the top surface of the bread/focacia and spread diced chicken (pre-cooked) on top (pre-cooked chicken can be found almost anywhere). next spread diced tomatoes on top of the chicken layer and then add a layer of shredded mozz. cheese. place in a 300 degree oven until cheese is melted. after its out of the oven you can sprinkle on some parm. cheese or green onions if you like. slice and enjoy. its like a cheap/easy version of pizza.

Pork Tenderloin noob questions

I used to work at a restaurant and they would do soak pork chops in a brine. doing so, the pork soaked up the salty water. this will help flavor the pork as well as keep it more moist longer during cooking. you could give that a try to your tenderloin and then just add various herbs or rub in the brine or before cooking. gl.
