An Introduction to Japanese Food and Drink - The 2009 Japanese Food & Sake Festival (w/ Pics!)

Haha. Looks like you're getting a lot of grief for not posting an announcement before the event happened. Thanks for joining me this year. Sounds like we may have busloads joining us next year!

FYI: I'm pretty sure the Dassai was 23% not 36%. I only remember cuz it was the number of the greatest basketball player that ever lived...MJ, but I could be wrong.

Don't worry, I like being lost in the Wonton Forest.

Thanks for the comparison! I guess I can skip TK the next time I'm up in the Bay area and leave room for more ramen...haha.

The Savory Japanese Pancake - Gaja Moc, the Okonomiyaki Specialist! [Review] w/ Pics!

ご馳走様でした!Monjya rocks!! We should have drank a couple more pitchers...haha. Excellent review! Next time we'll get some meat in the monjya so I can chop it up with the giant spatulas. After all, that's part of the fun!

Is there better Ramen than Daikokuya?

ns1, it's where L&L used to be. Great breakdown in the comparison btw.

Hey ek, when's the last time you went to CM Daikoku? I heard it's getting better. Whatever you do tho, don't go back to Maruyu unless your car needs lubrication. Their shoyu ramen is like a synthetic 10w-40.

That hot sauce is indeed great and goes with everything! ns1, I'm glad you gave them a try.

And yes, everyone please support! I go at least once a week if not more. It's the perfect alternative to all the ramen I eat...haha.

Is there better Ramen than Daikokuya?

Thanks for the vid! Sadly, I think all 30 could still beat anything we have in LA...haha (ok that wasn't very funny). But I still have hope!

Hey EK, you're becoming quite the ramen expert. ;) Nice job! If only Ippudo or Jangara or Tsukumo or Nantsutte could bring their tonkotsu to LA!

PurpleTeeth, Chuuka Soba Gomen in Stanton has a really good Tonkotsu-shio ramen. It's Wakayama-style so slightly different from Daikokuya's but still pork bone based.

Btw, went to Asa last night and it was great! Their kotteri shoyu is as close as you can get to Tokyo in LA.

Santouka-- Review (What is up with that pork?)

Nice! The toroniku shio is by far the best, but like Lau said, it can be inconsistent. Foo-Foo Tei's shio is different (no pork), but amazing nonetheless.

Best ramen around Pasadena?

Hmm...best curry? Have you tried Foo-Foo Tei's curry (HH location)? That's some darn good curry and arguably the best in socal!

Hi Liu! You're very welcome and thank YOU for such kind words! I agree with everything you said up above. I can't get enough of this place. Not only is the food good, but just hanging out there makes me feel at peace. It's cold and raining outside...perhaps tonight will be a Wonton Forest night too!

I heard Gyu-kaku's ramen aint that bad and that's right there on green st if i'm not mistaken, but i have yet to try it. I've tried pretty much everything else though and agree with everyone's replies. I would also recommend Foo-Foo Tei in Hacienda Heights (not Monterey Park).

The Comfy, Neighborhood Japanese Pub - Kappo Honda [Review] w/ Pics!

I miss Kappo Honda. There was a time when my friends and I would go every Tuesday night. I went a few months back and it was funny to see how some green workers from back in the day are now managers. I need to move back to OC.

Btw, Honda-ya in Little Tokyo ain't that bad!...haha. I like the atmosphere there and the food is steadily getting better.

Ivan Ramen - Minami Karusuyama - Tokyo

I was there back in August. Ivan is a great guy! You can just tell that he loves what he does, which makes Ivan Ramen that much better. I can't wait to return next year! He also had great recommendations of other ramen-ya's in the area. I'm glad to hear his lines are still long.

I need to make a little revision about the sliced pork. Every time I've been back, the pork has been very moist and fresh with lots of flavor. According to Chef Paul, the texture really depends on the cut of pork and apparently I just happened to get an unusually dry piece on my first visit. Well, it looks like he's solved that problem because I've been back almost a half dozen times and it has consistently gotten better!

Don't forget about their gyoza, curry, chilean seabass, stuffed soft shell crab, saba, ika maruyaki, ebi fry, kokudama....oh the list goes on and on and on....

Hi MengMacFoodie. I had the same reaction so I definitely understand. Don't forget to add some wontons to the Chiu Chau...you won't be disappointed!

Went back today so I could get away from all the smoke and fires in the area. I sought comfort in the Chiu Chow w/ added wontons and of course the homemade chili sauce. Sure enough, I left pleasantly satisfied!

I don't get all the hype around Madison Square Garden either. I mean, it's just a building. Oh wait...wrong MSG.

I don't mind MSG too much but understand that people can react to it differently. Btw, ajinomoto water is nothing new--it's called Aquarius...haha.

Gomen is my fav of the oc ramen-ya's. Definitely go and order the tonkotsu-shio ramen! But be aware of their funky hours. Mon, Tue, Wed open for lunch only; Thur closed; Fri, Sat, Sun open both Lunch and Dinner. I forget the exact hours but at least you'll know not to go when its closed.

Nor am I an expert. I just love eating it and happen to have a blog solely devoted to it! And yes, like ns1, my name is Keizo and I am a ramen addict.

Hey ns1, you down for an OC ramen run? Kohryu, Mentatsu, Maruyu, Santouka, Daikokuya, Ebisu, Gomen, Shinsengumi, Kairakutei...Wait, maybe we should spread it out over a couple days....hehe.

Hi DaBigBuddha! Were you sitting on my right? I apologize for not introducing myself, but I'm sure we'll be meeting at WF again!

Thanks for sharing your take. I totally agree that Chef Paul's food is "very clean." It's NOT boringly bland and it's NOT over-the-top. It's just right!

Well I'm a sucker for sauce so I didn't really notice that it was too much. But the best part about it is that Chef Paul is open to special accommodations cuz he cares about his customers and cuz food is so subjective to begin with. And yes, the flavor of the pancake was very good. I also found myself wanting more but the size is perfect as an appetizer to the soup.

Well put rameniac! Yeah, I think we went on a very bad day. I don't mind the starchiness of the asahikawa noodles (especially in bowls from Hachiya or Asameshi) but on this day they weren't very special.

Can't wait for our round table. As geeky as this sounds, we may end up setting a new record for conversing about a single subject--ramen. Speaking of which, tomorrow is GWR day.

So what's next? OC? Westside? Downtown? Gardena? SD? We could turn this into a sport! Anyway, I'll see you on your blog.
