Ukrainian Restaurants

Last time I was in Chicago (12 years ago?) I eat a Galans (sp?) a Ukrainian
Restaurant in, of all place, the Ukrainian Village. Galans is no longer in business. Are there any others? It was my mother's cooking in the early part of my life and I like to sample it occasionally. If there are none, maybe a good Polish or Russian place.

Thank, John in San Francisco

Where can I buy smoked sturgeon in San Francisco or Marin?

Not too cncerned about the cost

Marea--dress code

Thanks Erica. I took a look--it is a rather philosophic discussion about clothing. I think I will go with the dress slacks and white button shirt.

Marea--dress code

My SO and I are dining (dinner, not lunch) at Marea next week. We are traveling from San Francisco and I want to pack as little as possible. Do I need dress slacks and a nice shirt & sport coat, or could I get by with black jeans and a polo shirt? I do not want to be significantly underdressed. I would call the restaurant and ask but they always tell you to dress up even if half the patrons come in track suits.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Bar Room at the Modern (non-RW) Review

Well you have me worried as I was planning lunch at the Modern when we are in NYC (from San Francisco) in April. Loud or annoying music is a huge turn-off for me. Could you tell me more--was it loud and what is was?

Le Bernardin-Lunch Prix Fixe

I was looking at the lunch menu at LB. Looks like a bargain at $68 at least compared to dinner at $109. Neither the menu from their website nor the menu on menupages explains what you get for lunch--is it two courses plus dessert or three plus dessert or???

Taste of Wynn

When Wynn's starts offering discounts you know times are bad in LV. I looked at the site--Alex is offering three courses for $95. Maybe that is not a bargain but it is much cheaper than usual. I think I will try it if I can fit it in when I visit in early April. Many of the specials are only on certain days of the week, or between certain hours.

Las Vegas recs for classic cocktail fanatics, on or off strip?

I have two suggestions: the bar at Nob Hill (MGM Grand) has top notch bartenders who take making drinks seriously. They are very good with the classics. Another suggestion fairly close to Nob Hill is Red Square at Mandalay Bay. Many unusual cocktails featuring, as you might guess, vodka. If you get there before the crowds (its open at 4) you can sit at the bar which has a strip of ice running down the center to keep your drink cool. They generally have special deals between 4 and 6 PM.

I have not tried it yet, but there is also an "ice bar" at Mandalay Bay. They give you a loaner coat to keep warm, and you are limited to 15 minutes at a time because of the temperature. If you try that one be sure and post a report.

Las Vegas Tasting Menu Deals

CD: I have eaten at Nob Hill twice and sat in one of the glass booths each time. We really liked the booth and the food. On our last visit, the couple in the booth next to us were acting like it was a private booth rather than glass but we enjoyed the show. The drinks and service were great too. The menu has undergone a major makeover. I know you will give us a great report after you try it. . Mention that you want a booth when you reserve.

Death & Co. / Milk and Honey-esque bar in Vegas [moved from Manhattan board]

Nancy and I visit both Las Vegas and New York on a regular basis. We have had drinks at Death & Co, PDT, and the Brandy Library in New York. There is nothing exactly comparable in LV but the bar at Nob Hill comes within shouting distance. They had very good and serious bartenders. Another option is Red Square. They have unusual drinks--the bartenders are showmen but they still make pretty good drinks. I think you would enjoy them both.

EMP Lunch dress code

My wife and I are dining at EMP for lunch during the holdiay period. She tells me that black jeans, a nice shirt, and a sport coat would be fine. I am thinking that dress slacks would be more appropriate. Is she right? I am not interested in dressing up--I just don't want to do underdressed.

Christmas Eve Italian?

Last year my wife and I dined at Lupa on Xmas Eve--it was very good. We did not have the feast of seven(?) fishes because the diners next to us warned us that is was not very good. We ordered off the regular menu and were very pleased.

Gramercy Tavern, EMP lunch vs Joel Robuchon Pre-Theater Menu

I would love the pre-theater menu for $59. just I looked at their menu on-line and it was not listed. Do you know what they offer on that menu?

Amada - Recent Visit

My wife and I (San Francisco 'hounds) visited Amada two weeks ago based on reports on Chowhound. I really loved the food--on that I agree with everyone-but the octopus was the best I have ever had. I would almost fly to Philly to order it again.

Mario's B&B in Vegas (Pasting Tasting Menu)

My experience there is that both parties have to have the tasting menu. Also, when my wife wanted to sub one of the pasta dishes for another pasta dish, they said we could as long as both parties do the sub. In other words, everyone gets the same thing.

This is not true of the wine however. My wife and I had different wines and that was not a problem. BTW, I am not sure if have a wine pairing for each course is a good idea. They courses come fairly quickly. I just got two glasses--one for the first part and one for the second part of the meal.

And one last comment--we thought it was very good.

Reviews: Sterling Brunch, Fix, SW Steakhouse, Burger Bar & Nobhill

I have eaten at Nob Hill twice and really enjoyed the food and the service. I think that it is the most underrated restaurant in LV. I am sorry about your service experience--it would have made me angry to spend so much for food and not get good service. If I were you, I would write and complain to the manager

Las Vegas Bar Menu

You might enjoy the Buble Bar which is part of Restaurant Guy Savoy. They offer 4 apps for $40. The food is just great. The downside is that the bar area is a little plain. My wife and I really enjoyed it.

Lunch near Barnes

A couple of San Francsico 'hounds plus another couple are going to the Barnes Museum on a Saturday in August. We will want lunch after our visit. Any suggestions? We have a car, price is not a problem but no Asian food as there is plenty of that where we are from.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Reno dining--Sezmu and ??

Based on recommendation of fellow ‘hounds, I gave LuLous a try on a Friday night. Wow, were we glad we did. My wife said it was the best steak she ever had and her goat cheese app was great also. I started with the foie gras and it was the best (out of maybe 15 times) that I have ever had. My Ahi Tuna was delicious also. The bill with wine and tip was about $230 which is expensive for Reno but worth it. After I told the waiter how much I enjoyed the food and how it compared favorably with the Bay Area and Las Vegas, he suggested that I visit Sezmu. I told him that I had already reserved.

We also, based on the advice of Chris Walker Versus on this site, tried the Chapel Tavern right across the street from LuLous. We loved the bar—low key but fun. Both place are on the must do list for the next Reno trip.

We had an excellent meal at Sezmu on Sunday night. My only problem with the place (our second visit) was that after 8:30 we were the only patrons. I guess Reno is not a Sunday night dining type of town. Both my fish and Nancy’s steak were very good but not as good as LuLous. It was cheaper however.

We had another couple of interesting dining experience. We had Kobe beef sliders and pulled pork sliders at the bar at Fin, Charlie Palmer’s place at Grand Sierra. Both were excellent although the reviews of both of his restaurants at the GS have mixed at best.

The other place is the Pneumatic Dinner near the Truckee River. What a joint! It is a hole in the wall and most definitely unique. We went for waffles on Sunday morning. They were just OK but I was still glad for the experience. If you live in Reno give it a try on Sunday morning, the only day they serve waffles.

Cavihour @ Red Square (Las Vegas)

I go every time I am in LV. However, it is a free $65 order of American caviar when one person buys two drinks made with Imperial vodka. The drinks must be pure vodka or a martini. In months past if two people each bough a drink you get the caviar. Now one person must buy two drinks for the freebie. So, my wife has a drink and I must order two for the freebie. The drink made with Imperial vodka are expensive--something like $15 per drink.

Not as much of a bargain as you hoped for but it is still fun. And the bar is great even if you pass on the "free" caviar.

Michael Mina - Nobhill or Seablue

I have eaten at both and strongly prefer Nob Hill. The one fish dish I had a year ago at NH was one of the best I have ever had. Unfortuantely, I don't remember the details except that I loved it. The bartenders at NH are famous for their drinks. And, if you are going with your bf, you should get one of the booths by the bar. We always like sitting there--it is kinda private. My wife has had the lobster pot pie (I think it was $72) twice and raves about it every time.

I have suggested before on this site that NH is the most underrated dining spot in Las Vagas.I am glad to give it a plug.

Reno dining--Sezmu and ??

Thanks for all the suggestions folks. I have reserved at LuLou's and Sezmu. The other day is left open for whatever I see that looks good once I am there. I will also go to Chapel Tavern.

And, I will report back.

Reno dining--Sezmu and ??

I think I will try Z Bistro in Carson City--its a nice drive from Reno. You are not the first person to knock Reno for its fish selection. It is not because it is in the desert. You can get great fish in Vegas but you pay for it.

Steve: We really like fish and French. Modern American is good also. We are open to anything except Asian as we live in the Bay Area and have plenty of that here.

Reno dining--Sezmu and ??

Nancy and I will be in Reno at the end of June for three days. Last year we dined at Sezmu and really enjoyed it. We are going back to Sezmu but I would like some advice from Reno hounds for two other dining options that would be Sezmu quality. I was thinking of Charlie Palmer Steak or Fin, his fish house. However, the reviews on this board have been mixed tending toward the negative. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
