Sigh................ Cooking Channel and Baron Ambrosia

Believe it or not, he was much more "schticky" when his show was on channel 25 in NYC. I couldn't get through even one episode. I don't follow this show but have been able to sit through at least one episode of it on the CC, so it' an upgrade from what it was!

Maggi Sauce.

Try M2M near Colimbia.

EMP--now what?

I, for one, am really looking forward to this. I think it's exciting, bold and daring and it could work out great or fall flat on its face. Still, just the thought that a restaurant such as EMP would think to do something like this elevates them in my mind.

Then again, I've always found the restaurant's ambiance to be pleasant but deathly dull. It can use some livening up.

Jin Ramen on Broadway and 125th street

While I am by no means a ramen expert, I know what I like--and I like this place! The spicy tonkotsu broth was incredibly creamy and satisfying as a whole. And the kara-age was tasty as well--I could've easily eaten the whole dish myself but was sharing with one other person.

It's exciting to have a quality ramen place open up in Harlem. It was pretty packed the night we went and hopefully will remain so. I'll defintely be going back.

Chinese grocery anywhere on Upper West Side?

I'm curious about this myself. LIke JN, I've only ever seen bok choy at Westside Market. The same mostly applies to M2M, and it charges a premium for bok choy.

Not To Boast Or Anything...

Well, if Per Se worked for JLo and Bradley Cooper (the 2011 People Magazine's SEXIEST MAN ALIVE!), then it should meet your and your friend's needs.

Inexpensive place near NYU

Tre Giovani was a frequent lunch haunt of mine when I worked in that neighborhood. It's pretty good. Decent food that won't knock your socks off but a fun, casual place.

Fighting over the check

What's most interesting to me is that I have offered a server my credit card many times, and when the server returns, it's inevitable that the card is returned to my husband.

In most Chinese restaurants, the server just leaves the check in the middle of the table. You haven't seen anything yet until you see the Chinese argue over who will pay for the check! I mean, it involves pushing, shoveling and shouting that can go on for a while. Quite a scene!

Do you have a favorite flavor of Progresso Soup?

+1 on the Macaroni & Bean. I tried this for the first time recently and just loved it.

Koreatown Restaurant with Atmosphere & Hospitality

Would not recommend BCD based on the OP's criteria. It is the only restaurant I've been to where, after I came back from the bathroom and returned to my table, found two strangers sitting there and my jacket gone. The patrons next to my table told me that the waitress took my jacket...mind you, I hadn't even paid yet, and when I found the waitress and asked for my check, there was A LOT of confusion among the staff.

Not sure what they thought: that I left my jacket and bailed on the check? I mean, trying to pay for my meal was so difficult that it would've been much easier to just get my jacket and leave!

Ramsay shilling for Acura now?

Saw the commercial for the first time yesterday. It's really funny, and I'm not a GR fan!

Whatever you call what he's doing, if I were in his shoes, I'd do the same. Lidia Bastianich appears on QVC occasionally. Doesn't make me think any less of her.

Sifton Replacement

Agreed with what's already been said here: 1) Why didn't Asimov get the appointment and 2) "Dining with Dexter" was JUST. SO. BAD.

Hard to say which was worse: "DDD" or Amanda Hesser's old "sex-and-the-cityish" column about her boyfriend. Oy.

Meat free and healthy in Harlem?

Hmmm...thanks! I just took a look at the menu, and it looks really good. I will definitely check this place out.

Meat free and healthy in Harlem?

Besides Patsy's, which doesn't deliver, can you recommend any other good pizza places in this neck of the wood--especially for deliveries?

I haven't tried Bad Horse but have tried PDO and wasn't impressed.

kimchi chronicles - new PBS series

Oh, yes, I recognize them. One is a Tony Award-winning Oscar host and movie star whose movie just ranked #1 at the box office this weekend.

It's distracting, gimmicky and unnecessary for a show of this caliber.

kimchi chronicles - new PBS series

I like it a lot. It always leave me hungry and has exposed me to a cuisine that's way more (in spite of the show's title) than kimchee.

I think the wife's (Marja?) improving with each episode, and it's interesting to watch her interact with JGV. The only thing I could do without is the celebrity appearances. The show's good enough without those types of distractions.

UWS - Best Places in 90's and 100's?

Lido is pretty good, but it's not cheap and so it's not a regular destination for me.

Zoma is terrific.

Have you tried the new beergarden that opened on 116th and FDB? It attracts a pretty sizable crowd and I always see people chowing down. A friend went for brunch and recommended it.

Costco food finds - 3rd quarter 2011 [old]

The precut pineapple and mango in the Manhattan location. Delicious and convenient, and I am encouraged to eat them because there is no effort involved. Healthy too!

Chinatown: 456 Returns

Yes, this place does hold a lot of sentimental value. My parents, both now deceased, and my family used to eat at the original incarnation quite often.

My sisters and I returned several months ago and though the food was ok. It was very clean, but not much flavor. I don't remember all that we ordered except that there was a casserole dish, XLB, Shanghai rice cake and scallion pancake.

Chez Lucienne would be a nice place for lunch. The menu is interesting and diverse, but I always make it a point to order its fries w/mayo on the side!

Your disappointing purchases from Costco

Same here! Should've known when a neighbor gave it to me after she said she didn't like it. It was extremely oily and goopy.

I'm also going to add the lobster salad that is premade. Had it two weeks ago and gave it away . So, so salty. Such a shame--it wasn't cheap.

How often do you drink at lunch during the work week?

In my experience, this was more common in the 1980s-'90s. We'd go out for lunch, people would order a glass of wine, and no one thought anything about it.

These days, it's a semi-miracle if the people in my office actually leave their desk for lunch, let alone have a drink!

New show for Andrew Zimmern?

Full confession...my mother used to prepare herbal medicine for me when I was a kid for an ailment (very common in my culture). It tasted godawful. And I did end up throwing some of it down the drain instead of drinking it all. Sorry, mom. I know you meant well. But I literally couldn't stomach it anymore.

New show for Andrew Zimmern?

I really enjoyed his recent shows on Hong Kong and Chengdu. The best ones yet, IMO.

Have you ever OD'd on a food? And if you did, did you ever recover?

Just happened recently. Hubby and I went out to a steakhouse in NYC. He started with two dozen oysters and had the filet mignon. I started with crab cakes and also had the filet mignon. We also got three sides--creamed spinach, green peas, and some kind of a potato dish. Also wine. He ended the menu with a sundae; I had cheesecake. And oh, yes, there was the delicious bread that came with the meal.

The funny thing was I didn't feel so full immediately after dinner. But once we got home, DEAR MOTHER OF GOD. My husband passed out while I watched a bad movie on SyFy trying not to throw up. Maybe it would've be better if I had done so. I groaned a lot that night.

I can't recall the last time I ate at a traditional steakhouse, and it'll be a while before I do again. Suppose I can always order less...but what fun is that? :)

In terms or recovery, I've found that eating light the following day, then back to regular eating the second day always works.
