specific San Antonio questions

Is everything going to be super crowded...i.e. unable to get in anywhere? And that's a bummer about the bbq!

specific San Antonio questions

My husband and I will be traveling with 3 members of my family who aren't adventurous eaters. We want to have at least one nice dinner together and are going to be staying near the river walk. They are also pretty thrifty so nothing too spendy.

Next question - NYE. Where to go for a drink or two for the husband and I? I'm looking for a nice atmosphere...definitely not something in the middle of the party. Festive is nice...but we are in our 40's and are fine with not being in the center of the action.

Lastly...BBQ...is there good BBQ in SA?? We will only be in town 2 nights and don't want to drive out of the downtown area. Will be traveling up from Corpus Christi area...so anything on the way would be nice too.

Jazz in Quebec City/Montreal

Will be visiting Montreal and Quebec City for the first time in less than a month. What are some of the best places to listen to jazz and get a nice meal in either location.

Also, will be celebrating a 40th birthday while in Montreal....is Europea a good choice for a special birthday celebration?

Thanks!

What to do with a bottle of Cabernet?

This sounds wonderful. For those asking, it's not a very expensive bottle. It was given to my husband when we checked into the Hyatt Regency - we were there to celebrate his birthday and it was left in our room for him. A very nice touch, but I would have been happier with a cup cake! :)

What to do with a bottle of Cabernet?

I was recently given a bottle and I'm not a big red wine drinker. Tell me - what are your favorite recipes using Cabernet Sauvignon?? Thanks!

What's for Dinner? #149 [old]

Steaks have been marinading all day in an Asian Marinade. I'm having a wild rice mix along with carrots and freshly picked sugar snap peas. Also going to make a simple cucumber salad and DH has gone to pick up a bottle of wine! Yum!

Birthday dinner help needed for Downtown Detroit

I was thinking about Traffic Jam...never been but have friends that eat there on a regular basis. It will probably be jammed considering it's Noel Night. Is it a pretty big space? Cass Cafe looks good. Never heard of it. Thanks for the recs.

Birthday dinner help needed for Downtown Detroit

My DH and another couple are going downtown for Noel Night next weekend. It also happens to be our friends birthday. We are looking for something casual as our dress will be primarily to keep warm, not to be dressed up! She's not a very adventurous eater and neither is her husband. Price shouldn't be too high-end but it is a birthday celebration so slightly expensive will do. Can anyone help?

Good to know about the O-Rings. I will have to give them a try. You never know with them...if you're going to get a ton of greasy breading and little onion taste, although I should have guessed the breading wouldn't be too heavy considering the fish is so darn good.

Also good to know about the perch. I'm a fan - and I'll have to give it a try.

Fish and Chips - Scotty Simpson's (Westside Detroit)

DH and I were in Toronto last month and I completely Fell In Love!! The melding of the cultures provides so many delicious dining options that we could have ate for a month solid and had a huge variety! I still need to get over to that board and post a trip report!

Thanks for the tip on takeout at Scotty's! Unfortunately (or fortunately for my cholesterol level) I live a bit to far to do carry out. It may be a bit weird, but I prefer lemon on my fish and tarter sauce on my fries. Although their tarter sauce was so good I used it on both my fish and my fries (a double whammy on the fat intake). I'm curious about other menu options - have you had anything other than the traditional fish and chips dinner? While there I heard one person order shrimp and other the perch.

Spending time in Cleveland for Christmas with Family.

DH and I went to Cleveland for my birthday weekend and went to Lola. I really enjoyed it. Very upscale but not too stuffy. I am not a big meat eater but had the best scallops I've ever had. DH had a pork dish and loved it. I say go for it.

What's funny to me are those little cups they serve the tarter sauce in! We had a small collection of them by the time we were done eating!

I found some seriously good fish and chips at St. Lawrence Market (Busters?) and also at Kensington Market.

Fish and Chips - Scotty Simpson's (Westside Detroit)

DH and I finally made it to Scotty's last weekend for fish and chips. I fell in love - the food, the decor that probably hasn't changed since the place opened and the waitress who has probably been there as long as the decor, who nodded and smiled a clueless smile when I told her I heard about the place through Chowhound. :)

We both got the traditional fish and chips dinner. The best part about it was the tarter sauce. Oh wow...I wish they sold the stuff...I'd buy a gallon.

I'd venture to say this is the best F&C in the Detroit area. If you think there's a better place, please let me know. For the last 2 months (since our trip to Toronto where I had some darn good F&C I've been on a quest here in Detroit to find the best).

Are there any good recommendations for food at the Eaton Centre - anyone?

Detroit Food Tour

Bummer. I too adore Farmer's Markets. Royal Oak's is Saturday as well. I almost forgot - Ann Arbor also has a food cart courtyard - would be a great spot for lunch one weekday. Lots of ethnic food. I don't know what the food truck scene in Baltimore is like, it's fairly new around here.

Detroit Food Tour

Please don't come to Detroit and not have pizza. Loui's is def the best. Splurge and get an antipasto salad too. If you like farmers markets, hit up the one in Royal Oak, or go on Saturday to the one in Detroit before or after your coney dog :)

Zingerman's deli in Ann Arbor is always fun...huge portions, kind of pricey...fun college town atmosphere. Also in Ann Arbor is Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger - fun and quirky and pretty decent if you decide before you go that your meal will have no nutritional value whatsoever. They deep fry the vegetables.

Need help with 4 night trip to Toronto/NOTL in October

DH and I will be traveling to Toronto the second week of Oct. I've been checking out the boards but there are so many choices. I'll give you a brief run down of our itinerary and what we are looking for, if you would be so kind as to fill in some of the blanks!

Right now we have a hotel room booked in Mississauga, however, I am trying (via Priceline) to find something downtown that will fit our budget. So, any recs in Mississauga might come in handy, but hopefully we will be doing our meals downtown. We will have a car.

Arriving Friday. Looking for a quick lunch - nothing sit down or that will take too long. Want to do a walking tour at 1:00 that leaves from Bannock restaurant. Will end our day at ROM (open to 8:30 on Fridays). Need a rec for dinner. Was thinking of Fieramosca Trattoria?? We love Italian.

Saturday's agenda def includes St. Lawrence Mkt. Here's where I want to go at the Market but let me know if I'm missing anything:
Carousel Bakery
Olympic Cheese
Schefflers Deli
El Gaucho Chorizos
Will eat lunch here. Are there tables to sit at within the market or outside of the market? I'm also hoping to go to Kernels Popcorn and Soma Chocolatemaker. Any other specialty stores in the area?

We will end our day Saturday in the Distillery District. Need a rec for dinner.

Sunday means a good breakfast/brunch. No clue on where to go for this?? We have a walking tour booked at 10:00 that leaves from the AGO and ends in Chinatown. I've always wanted to try a good place for Dim Sum? We want to go to Castle Loma, CN Tower, etc. Also need dinner rec.

Monday we are planning on a day trip to NOTL and possibly the Falls. Any suggestions for lunch and dinner will be appreciated. Also, any specialty food shops along the way? What about wineries?

Tuesday we will do some shopping (Eaton Centre?) We are leaving Tuesday afternoon. Am thinking about Il Fornello for a $10 pizza (their Tuesday special) before we hit the road.

What I want to accomplish: a good bahn mi sandwich, a good burger (Burger's Priest?), a few nice sit down dinners, maybe a good diner, and some yummy Chinese food!

I know this was a very long thread. Thanks for reading!

Steaming Hot Dog Buns at Home

This is what I ended up doing and it worked perfectly, except next time I'll steam them "to order". They did get a little dried out if they sat too long. Which I'm sure would happen no matter how I steamed them. Thank you!

Steaming Hot Dog Buns at Home

I am having friends over for dinner today for Chicago Style Dogs. We are excited to attempt this at home as wel went on a road trip to Chicago recently and fell in love with the dogs. I have all of the fixins...down to the poppy seed buns! However, I just realized I'm not sure how to steam the buns. I don't have a double broiler. Help save Chicago Dog Friday please! :)

Crab Cake Help

Wanted to report back that we went with the fresh crab from Whole Foods. It was my first attempt. I used a recipe found on the cooking channel's web page. I wasn't crazy about the spicy mayo...and I would have preferred a little more flavor in the crab cakes, but all in all it was pretty decent!
