Who's familiar with 'old' San Diego restaurants?

Oooooh!! I had the breast of capon with all those wonderful sides. $5.75? That was a lot of money to me back then.

Now an old menu like that is worth photoing and attaching for us all to see. I LOVED Lubach's.

Chowhound or Cuisinepoodle?

In the valley I can go very very good Italian food at a place called Antonio's. Pizza, a salad and maybe a split dessert for easily in to the $20 per person price range

Oh Venus, you and me both. WT*, OMG, and the like just leaves me cold. Why do we have to guess what the poster is saying about the restaurant or some restaurant.
I've got to see if there is a rant page for us.

What restaurant do you really really really miss that is now closed ?????

One last one for me and then I throw in the towel.

This one is for the historians of the group. Does any one remember the Captain's Table on La Cienega near Third. The place was famous for it's live lobsters although I don't remember tanks and it may have been just too far back to have tanks. I was eight years old, it was 1951 and I was there for dinner with my Dad. I only remember it was dark, lots of wood and very formal. I don't know when they closed but that was my one and only time there.

Napa for a Day: Is this itinerary feasible with Saturday traffic?

Depending on who you know at the first three wineries you may be stumbling by the time you get to winery number 4 without something to eat. Even a hero type sandwich eaten in the car would be a big help. I throw in, "who you know" because if you start barrel sampling you can plan on ditching winery number 4, Local law enforcement is not proud and would be more than happy to provide you with overnight accommodations.

Have a good time, enjoy yourself and just do it with care.

I did a quick word search of this thread and couldn't find the next two words Buggy Whip. How could we possibly leave out that restaurant. It was the icon for the '30s and '40s of Los Angeles. On top of that they made a pretty good steak and baked potato (although I had the French fries). Part of Los Angeles got ripped away when they closed. Hey Wiener do you have any pictures of that restaurant?

Then you must have known La Jolla as well. Remember the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club? I used to hang out there. The Marine Room was a very fine restaurant just outside the City of San Diego.

What year are you talking about? I went to the Atlantis when it first opened. It was the new high class restaurant in San Diego, on a par with Mr. A's

Chinese In Tiajuana

You have all done a very nice job for which I thank you. If I take the plunge and go to any of the Chinese restaurants in TJ, I'll report back.

Chinese In Tiajuana

I don't know what a long time is for you and Cristina but 33 years ago I used to go to a very good Chinese restaurant in the Palacio Azteca. I remember commenting to my then wife, "It's amazing to be sitting in Mexico, talking to a Chinese in Spanish about French Bordeaux wines". Now that's very long ago.

I don't think there was a finer restaurant than Lubach's. Many a memory was made there. I lived in Los Angeles but handled court cases in San Diego. Impressed girlfriends with Lubach's and the mock turtle soup and the duck in Montmorency.

Trip Advisor shows Chan's and some nice pictures. Another one that I picked up on the search was a place named Cat. What can you tell me about Cat, if anything?
Thanks for the tip on Chan's and the link to the history.

Man Fook Lo Dim Sum

Tony, good to hear from you. There's still no place like Man Fook Low nor anyone who will ever replace a Mr. Yee. Those are not memories they are a part of our lives. How about Florida? Anything worthwhile in the land of Chinese restaurants? I'll keep you posted on this end and recommend you Google a place called Hop Li in Chinatown. Take a look at their menu. Great lobster in Ginger Green onion sauce.

I have business plans in TJ and am staying at the Hotel Ticuan. I would like to have a Chinese dinner and figuring that TJ has become updated such as the hotel, I would like some recommendations. Thanks

I once dated the daughter of one of the owners once. She never took me to one of the restaurants for a piece. But their pizza was good.

What a collection of pictures and postcards. The one of the Luau with the table next to the pool. I sat at that table in 1972 with my Grandfather and my Grandmother. I told my then 82 year old Grandfather that on a Friday night it was a meet market and all the young ladies in Beverly Hills would show up. He asked my why I didn't bring him on a Friday night. Thanks for the memory.

Man Fook Lo Dim Sum

There is a place in the Valley called BBQ unlimited which has the best tasting shrimp in lobster sauce since I had it at Man Fook Low. It's on Sherman Way just west of Coldwater. Their web address
is ://www.bbqunlimited.com/

What restaurant do you really really really miss that is now closed ?????

I just remember that there was a pool patio in the center of the restaurant and that it was the first time I ever saw ice in a men's urinal. That was in 1968. I also remember the coach of the Rams used to meet there with the team and go over plays over a drink or two back in the 60s. The food in todays lingo was bar/pub with hamburgers being the center of attraction.

Konditori was one of my favorite restaurants for first dates. Coffee, a piece of pastry and conversation in beautiful surroundings. I liked the front part of the restaurant when you first walked in. It was NEAT.

You missed having a cloud of garlic and butter floating on a piece of toasted bread. What a shame. There's not much in the way of garlic bread today that comes close. Do I hear a challenge? The best around today, I suggest, is the Smoke House, and that's a restaurant that's still around.

Who remembers La Barbera's pizza in West L.A.?

You really think La Barbera was actually better than Villa Italian on Sepulveda? Dare I say Villa Italia was better. The square piazza with lots of toppings and lots of red wine in those glass decanters (assuming I as a law student and you as a college student couldn't afford a bottle of wine). When cooked extra well and it's wonderful crust, the place was unbeatable.
