Pasadena - Need Some Help

Haven't been in Pasadena in quite awhile. Would like to know what is new and really good for dinner. Will be there next Tuesday night. I've been to the Parkway Grill and their adjoining steakhouse. Preferably American, French or Chinese other than Yujean Kangs. Thanks.

chinese in los angeles robertson-olympic area

My daughter got her middle name from the restaurant Joss having seen same just before her birth when they still were on Sunset and Doheney (approx). Are they really that bad? There duck used to be a really good item with a bottle of Pinoit Noir. You make it sound as thouugh each person should have the Peking duck with their own bottle of Pinot Noir.

Off the Beaten Path Breakfasts

The one that was in Montecito was quite special but had very limited seating as opposed to their new place in Ventura.

Looking For Restaurant With Great Bone Marrow / Marrow-Based Dish

Laurel Tavern in Studio City does a very nice version of the marrow. Fun place but if you are of the older and less energetic stage in life (describing me) go early. If you are of that stage and like seeing the "meet market" trend setting group go later, but be prepared to wait.

Off the Beaten Path Breakfasts

Since you mentioned Santa Barbara I am assuming Ventura works as well. Love the Sunday brunch at Tutti's Off Main. Abeautiful patio to sit on and enjoy the early summer weather. Great egg dishes, lox and bagels and I even think pizzas if you are in the mood.

Dave & Romero's Texas Best BBQ-Studio City/Sherman Oaks

My wife bought an entire tri-tip and I thought it was a bargain ($39.95) and cooked to med-rare. Love BB as a restaurant but would not hesitate to get food for the house at this location.

Brats Brothers in the old Max's location in Sherman Oaks?

Went there last night with my wife for dinner. One waitress who appeared harried for the crowd she had and yet the service was excellent. Had the sausage sampler of 4 sausages which comes with a side of grandma's sauerkraut. Wonderful! Also comes with a pretzel which not exactly Oktoberfest was nonetheless very good. That along with a German Beer made for almost an Oktoberfest experience as helped along by the music. I recommend this place.

Best Clam chowder and Best Cioppino

Mywife and I for auld lang syne just had dinner at Alioto's and loved the clam chowder there. It is a brothier version and more in the style of Massachusset's then the chowders that have a white roux incorporated. The chowder could have been hotter but the clams in the broth were large and delicious.

LA's Oldest Still-Thriving Restaurants

Also the Valley Inn, possibly the oldest still existing in the San Fernando Valley, since 1947. One of the go to places when I was growing up.

LA's Oldest Still-Thriving Restaurants

I'll throw my chips in the pot. I didn't see, and maybe I missed it, any mention of the Buiggy Whip. Agreat place for old vibes. A steakhouse where Mickey Cohen used to hang out. Mickey who? Google it. Excellent for the price and crab claws when in season. Used to and still may serve green goddess dressing on their salads. A 1949 establishment.

Quiet & Romantic Anniversary Dinner - LA Area

I agree with Servorg. If you have box seats though it's lovely and romantic to get a Bowl Basket like at Greenblatts. Candles, stem wine glasses and good wine definitely fill the bill.

Where's the good posole? And when?

I've eaten my share of menudo and posole throughout Mexico and here in Los Angeles. El Abuelo serves one of the bvest versions I've had of Pososle here in Los Angeles. Regret the fact that there is no beer or tequila but because of their proximity to a school they are prohibited by law from serving it. You can do what some evil people that I know do and that's smuggle your own small flask of tequila in your pocket. The rest of there menu is equally as good. Posole as far as I know is served seven days a week and menudo on Saturday and Sunday only.

Great croissant in Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Noho, etc?

Same strip mall.

Great croissant in Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Noho, etc?

There is a donut shop on the corner of Ventura and Beverly Glen right across from the Verizon store. The best I've ever had. I also like Belwood Bakery on Ventura near Whitsett. Also very good.

Porter Ranch

I have friends coming in from Michigan who will be staying out at Porter Ranch. Need a really nice restaurant for lunch. One of my guests is a vegetarian. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Recommendations for Christmas gift card

A good not great restaurant but surely above that which you have described is Ghengis Cohen on 740 No. Fairfax. Really good egg rolls. Google it an check their menu but they should come within your price scheme. I also hope it fits within your loction scheme. Good luck.

Where can I purchase a Pork Crown Roast?

During the holidays I've seen them at Ralph's or they will make one up for you as well as Whole Foods.

Best Steak House

I am coming in to Chicago to visit a relative and want to take her to the best steak house Chicago has to offer (preferably not a chain). Looked at Capital Grille. Menu looks good and not above the price level I'm willing to spend but is it really the BEST that Chicago has of offer. The last time i was there I went to the steak house at the Seneca Hotel and had a great steak but I think I'd like to move up from there.

Man Fook Lo Dim Sum

I grew up there to. They had a great crew (Kenneth, Paul, Albert, Mr. Yee and some woman behind the counter that yelled at everybody. Their dim sum was the firs I ever had and is my benchmark. Proposed to my first wife there. The owner Frank had her engagement ring baked in to a fortune cookie and served to her at the end of dinner. What wonderful days and great food.

Signature taste

Standing on the front porch of Mt. Eden Vineyards tasting their top of the line Chardonnay on a beautiful day overlooking the Santa Clara Valley may be one of the most memorable tasting moments in my life. It made Mt. Eden the benchmark wine for me.

Will White Castle Ever Open and Succeed in Los Angeles or the West Coast???

Being a relative of Ayn Rand I became interested in your choice of names. Was it a whim or are we long lost relatives?

Signature taste

For an outstanding California Chardonnay, although some find it overoaked, I like Far Niente. Very buttery. I swear i use it to dip my lobster in. Sonoma Cutrer is another worthwhile winery and for a little further South Mount Eden Vineyards.

Signature taste

There certainly are signature wines and the winery blends within the 5 bordeaux grapes to achieve the same taste year after year. If you put a Lafite Rothschild in to a grouping of 10 other wines I will have no difficulty in picking the Lafite because of it's unique signature. The same is true in California. Put a Joseph Phelps Insignia into a group of California wines and again 9 out of ten times I will pick the Insignia. Got fooled once by Opus. I belong to a group that meets once a week a tastes wines that we have brown bagged so that we can try to fool one another.
I don't care how big of an expert you are thought or believe your self to be, but if you have never tasted a wine such as a Pinotage you are just not going to identify it other than to say "I have no idea what it is but I like (or dislike) it. That's what tasting wine for 47 years has done for me.

Wine Club Ideas for Father's Day

Not knowing where you live and whether some wineries will be able to ship to you I love some of the wineries out of central coast. They are all low production for the most part and turn out unique wines which your Dad might enjoy sharing and discussing with friends. My two immediate choices would be Saucelito Canyon in Arroyo Grande, CA. renowned for their Zinfandels and one or two other occasional varieties or Claiborne and Churchill known for their Alsatian style whites with an occasional Pinot Noir thrown in. Also in Arroyo Grande. Part of the fun of wine collecting and drinking for me is to get things other people don't have or get and sharing them with others.

Does anyone know of this type of deep-fried hot dog?

I didn't have time to go through what I found on google but I put in "hot dog on a bun battered and deep fried" and pulled up a bunch of responses, the first one being what you describe but I think it is a reecipe and not a restaurant.

MISTRAL SHERMAN OAKS......

This is a restaurant that people from over the hill come to. The steak tartare is absolutely one of the best if not the best in Los Angeles with pomme frite.

One of the finest serving staffs in all of Los Angeles and the owner Henry is the consummate restauranteur. It is pricey and worth every penny of it.

Will White Castle Ever Open and Succeed in Los Angeles or the West Coast???

I tried WC in Hammond, Indiana about two years ago. They were fun and my wife is also from Chicago but lived in Hammond. Back when she was a child they were 5 cents apiece. I think they still should be priced there. No I don't think they will ever make it on the West Coast.

Wil Wright's macaroons

I am told that it was McConnel's in Santa Barbara that was the real Wil Wrights. Last December I emailed them to see if I could find some Nesslerode Bula and they responded immediately. You might give them a try.

Chinese Deboned Chicken Stuffed with Sticky Rice?

I looked on the internet menu and it does not show. I know that I had it a year ago and it was fabulous. It is a pre-ordered item. I think the name on it was Chicken skin stuffed with rice.

Suggestions for great classic French Dip Sandwich in the SFV

Pineapple Hill makes a pretty good rendition of a French Dip sandwich at a fairly reasonable price with fries or salad ($9.95). When not in the mood for their Kona Burger whic I truly like so much that's my second choice off the menu. Full bar cheap wine. The words cheap wine are not to express thoughts about cost but about quality. But when you think about it what kind of quality do you need for a hamburger?
