Sorry you had a less than stellar experience at Soul. I probably should have warned you that's it's tiny. I've never experienced the service issues you describe, so I'm not sure what up with that.

New Yorker Looking for quintessential Atlanta cheap eats

I think that's a bit harsh to say the least.. I enjoy the Varsity. It is what it is....an iconic drive-in serving good hot dogs and onion rings.

West/SW Charlotte (NC) eats?

Ok, other places you might consider (although not on the west side) are Thai Taste, Copper, Monsoon and Vietnam Grill.

West/SW Charlotte (NC) eats?

Can you be more specific about where you're looking and why? Are you visiting? Will you have a car? West and southwest Charlotte isn't the greatest part of town for food. East Asian means Indian? Saffron is an Indian restaurant off S. Tryon Street near I-485 that is good....technically, that is SW Charlotte.

Your favorite bar/pub food...Traditional and Unique...

I think it would be far more unique to have menu items that aren't standard bar food...something a little more upscale, or perhaps more interesting is a better way to put it. Flatbreads with a variety of toppings, lamb lollipops, anchovy fries, guacamole stack (sort of a deconstructed guacamole), grilled caesar salad, etc.

chesepeak,va 23320 brunch and dinner Help

On your drive back, you might want to take Highway 13 to Highway 11 to 64 and stop by Blackbeard's BBQ in Conetoe (near Rocky Mount). One of the few quality BBQ joints open on Sunday, if that's your travel day. Closed Monday - Wednesday.

Rome Trip Report

My experience was that bottled water is the default if you ask for water. It was inexpensive, so I never went to the trouble of attempting to order tap water. Servers will often ask if you "still" or "with gas"...still will not be tap water, it will be uncarbonated bottled water.

A&M Grill or Allen and Son?

You are aware that there are 2 Allen & Son restaurants, with no ownership or management connection? One south of Chapel Hill near Pittsboro, and one near Hillsborough. Given that my many vistas to the Hillsborough location have all been nothing like what you describe, I have to wonder if your visits were to the Pittsboro location.

Bessinger's BBQ - Charleston, SC

Again, a search will turn up many, many posts on this topic, such as:

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/748057

Most of the great NC BBQ places are a 20 to 30 minute detour off 95. Blackbeard's is probably the best place closest to the highway. In Charleston, Sweatman's is excellent, imo.

Edit: I just read that you are detouring through Asheville. You might want to provide more detail about your route...I-95 to I-85 to I-40? Then I-26 to Charleston?

You might also want to search/post on the Mid-Atlantic Board for Virginia recs.

Ashville, NC eats end of February?

Do a search, lots of Asheville recs. The Admiral gets a lot of love on here, I haven't had the chance to go there yet. Places I have been and like are Table, Zambra, The Southern, Bouchon, Tupelo Honey and Salsa. 12 Bones is the place to go for BBQ in Asheville.

BBQ between Winston-Salem and Clemson

Lexington BBQ in Lexington, NC is excellent, as is Bridges BBQ Lodge in Shelby, NC (about a 15 to 20 minute detour off I-85).

Foodie's !st visit to Rome.. apt between Pontes Umberto and Cavour on the south bank.

Here's my trip report from my visit to Rome last November. I would highly recommend Fiametta, located near Piazza Navona, close to your apartment.

Best breakfast sandwich!

I suspect there is only one restaurant in the Shell station at Sherron Road and Highway 98. Don't think the name of the place is vital to finding it.

Not to be a jerk, but I really don't think I'd put Cafe Monte or George's Brasserie in the "innovative" category...croque monseur, escargot, onion soup, cassoulet and steak frites have been on menus for about a 100 years. Also, to me, the OP's use of the word "fresh" implies the use of local ingredients, which I don't think either of those places specializes in. They are both decent places, I just don't think they are what the OP is looking for, but I may be wrong. They are in Southpark.
