Wineries in Rutherford or St. Helena area Me and my girlfriend are having brunch at the Auberge du Soleil restaurant this weekend and I was hoping to find a winery or two to visit before or after our meal. We are somewhat new to wine and tend to enjoy the buttery chards and full bodied red wines that are not too heavy on the tannins. Top priority would be somewhere not too stuffy and with outdoor seating or views to enjoy the great weather we are supposed to have. Any help would be much appreciated. |

Napa Engagement Proposal - It's Going Down I'd just throw in that quality over quantity on a day like this may be best. If you think the Ferrari Carano garden is the best place, then maybe its worth going to only 2 wineries so that you have the time to pop the question in the place you think is best. |

Day Walking/Eating in Soho and the Villages We went out and had a great day of food. Lupa's Bucatini was pretty amazing, as were the tacos at la esquina. We had chocolate at Kee's (delicious), wine and bruschetta at 'ino, and went by Momofuku Milk Bar to get pork buns and some cereal milk ice cream. The milk bar is now across the street from the Ssam bar and the old milk bar location and it is smaller and no longer serves the pork buns. We were able to get the ice cream, but you have to wait for Ssam to open at 5 and go there if you want pork buns. Thanks for the tips, definitely will have to do it again and hit all the other spots. ----- 'ino |

There is the obvious choice of Shake Shack (although I still haven't been). Nice Matin also has the original 5 napkin burger (although I don't know if it is better/worse/as good as 5 Napkins'). ----- Shake Shack |

Day Walking/Eating in Soho and the Villages Thank you for the feedback! So we are taking a look at all the threads and trying to sort through it all. We are trying to limit the sit down places as much as we can so we can have some flexibility (although we will do some pasta at Lupa somewhere between 12-1). So far we definitely want to go to the following: Croissant at Pattisserie Claude, Panini or something at 'ino, Tacos at La Esquina, Pork Buns at Momofuku milk bar, some arepa's at Caracas Arepa Bar, share a pizza at Keste, and somewhere in there get some gelato at L'arte de Gelato or Otto (which is best?). I'm gonna try and map it out on a google map and see what kind of order makes sense and try and guess eating/transit times to see if I can fit in more along the way. ----- Patisserie Claude L'Arte del Gelato La Esquina Otto Caracas Arepa Bar 'ino Momofuku Milk Bar |

Day Walking/Eating in Soho and the Villages So I was going to plan a day of just walking around anywhere from Meatpacking to Soho or any of the Villages, eating and window shopping etc. with my girlfriend. I was looking to kind of do a food crawl of sorts and do some window shopping or poke into some gallery's or something to entertain ourselves between eating. I can't spend more than about $150 (on food, not including drinks) on the day, so its more like popping into places and grabbing a signature dish or something at the bar or grabbing some appetizers etc. Its going to be during a weekday. Are there any places/dishes that people can think of that pop into mind? Any recommendations? I'm thinking stuff like sharing a pizza at Keste, or a bowl of the spaghetti at Scarpetta, maybe grabbing something at one of the Momofuku's, etc. Any ideas? ----- |

BEST CHEAP EATS ON UPPER WESTSIDE? I would add Tolani, Recipe, and the Tangled Vine. ----- Tolani |

Im New in Town and need Gastronomic guidance For the best of the best, here is a quick list: Daniel, Jean Georges, Le Bernardin, Eleven Madison Park, Asiate (for the view not the food), Per Se, Masa, Del Posto. While there are MANY top shelf restaurants in the city, these are all unique for one reason or another. As for business lunches, many of the above do prix fixe lunch deals or serve lunch, as do places like Convivio, Marea, Gotham, Aldea, the Modern, and many many more. There are also many supermarkets, although I am not familiar with the area in which you live. I know there are several Whole Foods located throughout the city (most seem to be on the west side I think) but I'm sure someone else will be by to give you more tips on the east side markets. ----- Eleven Madison Park Jean Georges Del Posto Le Bernardin Asiate Convivio Marea Aldea Masa |

looking for dinner near lincoln center Salumeria Rosi is a solid option. Good food, good prices. Its Italian food, small plates and meats/cheese plates. ----- |

I went to the Tangled Vine recently, about two weeks ago, and since then I have been another 3 times. The food is really quite excellent, mostly small-medium size dishes intended to be shared and a VERY extensive wine list (all from Europe). I had the braised short ribs last night, which is one of the best braised meat dishes I have had. The Pork Montaditos which are made with crispy pork belly are delicious, the braised lamb cavatelli was excellent, fideos negros are also great. All around, a really solid place to go sit down, chat, and have some great food and wine. I noticed that most of the patrons came and did not leave for hours, chatting and drinking glass after glass. Service was pleasant. During happy hour, which is from 5-7PM they offer a few different glasses of wine for $5-6. I do believe that they also have a deal on bottles of wine at the time but I'm not sure. Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone in the area looking for a nice romantic meal or a fun night out with a small group. ----- |

Post-opera near Lincoln Center Salumeria Rosi is perfect so long as you don't have a large group. They have small plates, priced very reasonably and will fit in your budget and the food is delicious. ----- |

Which 2 fine dining options would you choose? Since the OP says he has some budget concerns I think it is important to point out that Per Se and Masa are in a different league price-wise than just about any restaurant in NY. Your going to pay over $1000 at either place for food/drinks. ----- Masa |

Ex-NY Hound visiting from LA - help me get my italian fix! Oh my mistake, I didn't realize you were looking for new places (shows how closely I read the post ;0). As for new restaurants that I've heard are a must try and on my list to visit in the next month or two, I'd say Aldea. It isn't the cozy little spot that a place like Malatesta is, but the food is great. I am also a big fan of Scarpetta, so I'll second that as well. ----- Scarpetta Aldea |

Which 2 fine dining options would you choose? Just my own two cents but if you eat at places like Jean-George, Daniel, Le Bernardin, Per Se, etc. you will spend more in two nights than you would eating at excellent restaurants like Scarpetta, Marea, Cafe Boulud, Craft, Aldea, 3 or 4 nights. If you want to say you ate at the 3 Michelin star places here in NY, then go for it, but IMO you will have food that you may like even more and go to more restaurants if you don't go to the absolute cream of the crop. I liked my meal at Scarpetta overall more than my meal at JG for instance. |

Need recs in Chelsea or surrounding areas for tonight There is Spice Market just a few blocks south in the meatpacking district. Its a jean-george owned restaurant if I remember correctly. ----- |

Best Burgers in NYC................. How do you compare Five Napkin's burger to Nice Matin's "Five Napkin Burger"? I was under the impression there is some relationship there but I don't know which is better as I've only had the one at Nice Matin (it was pretty enjoyable btw). ----- |

Ex-NY Hound visiting from LA - help me get my italian fix! I'd recommend Malatesta and Frankies 17 or the original Frankies in Brooklyn. Both great food, cozy, warm atmosphere, and good prices. ----- |

Glad to hear you liked it. All things considered, (food, wine, ambiance, service) it is my favorite restaurant I've been to in the city as of yet. |

I actually like sitting at the bar with my gf, it is different than a table but somehow also romantic. Thanks for the suggestion, I have read a lot about degustation and it totally slipped my mind. I will definitely check it out. |

I want to the my gf out to a nice dinner and I am looking to spend around $150 dollars food, tax, tip but not including wine/drinks. From that price range, I have landed on these three restaurants: Aldea, Mas, and Convivio. I was hoping for some feedback from people who may have eaten at them all or if there is somewhere that I should consider instead, please let me know. The two things I care about most are the food and a nice warm/romantic ambiance. I want to avoid places that are devoid of warmth and a sense of romance(rouge tomate for example). ----- Aldea |

Looking for lunch and afternoon tea spots I don't really know of anything for afternoon tea/people watching/dessert in that area so I hope someone else can be of help. |

Looking for lunch and afternoon tea spots Well I hope you have a wonderful day weekend! I think Salumeria Rosi is a great place in the Lincoln Square/UWS area. Its Italian food, mostly small plates, which are always fun to share and taste many different things. They have a wonderful selection of fine Italian meats and cheese, and good wine. It should fit your price range depending on how many plates you get. There is also Bar Boulud. I enjoyed the food there before the Opera and the service was nice. Again it should fit your price range. Picholine during lunch is $28 for a two course meal and the food is also excellent. It isn't terribly casual though, it will be more of your fine dining experience. For casual with a view, there is also Landmarc in the Time Warner building that will fit your price range and if you get seated by the windows you can look out over Columbus Circle and into Central Park. ----- Landmarc Bar Boulud Salumeria Rosi |

Thank you! I was looking for exactly what you offered. I wanted to basically know if its worth the money because for the same price I can go to Scarpetta, I Trulli, Marea etc. so I was wondering if it compares. It seems like it doesn't. |
|
|
Looking for lunch and afternoon tea spots If you could just provide a price target so that we can suggest places in your price range for lunch and then also for the afternoon that would help get you better suggestions. =D |

Thanks. There really isn't much in those threads about the place in detail. I'll keep looking but if anyone has been and can compare to some of the other Italian places in the city that would be great. |

I was walking by the MOMA a short while ago and saw what I thought may be a promising menu at a restaurant called Il Gattopardo. I didn't find much on chowhound about it so I thought I'd ask if anyone has been and has any opinions? ----- |

I have eaten at all the Wondees, mostly delivery but not always, and while the flavor is good most of the time, I usually get a blob of Thai ingredients and flavors. What I mean is that the noodle dishes are all gummy and just feel like a blob of gelatin with some Thai ingredients thrown in and the curry dishes are mediocre, not fragrant enough and too much coconut milk to really taste the rest of the ingredients. I miss my Thai restaurants in California to be honest. I don't get the "Wonder" of Wondee. |

What exactly is Masa's price at the moment? Is there still the 20% "service charge" before tax and tip? If so, make sure you are taking that into consideration. |

Suggestions near 10th Ave w.50s or 60s for after Lincoln Center tonight? Salumeria Rosi if you can get a table. ----- |

Best Burgers in NYC................. My favorite is the burger at Blue Smoke, although I have to admit I've only had burgers at a few places. I think they put a touch of bbq sauce on the outside at the last second to seal in the juices or something, but it is very good. The burger I had at the Breslin was flavorful although was slightly over salted IMO, but I like to have tomatoes on my burger and I dislike the fact that they don't serve it with lettuce, tomato or onion on the side so that I can make the decision myself as to whether I want an unadulterated burger or not. I'm not a huge fan of Shake Shack, I don't really get the craze. It is inconsistent, ranging from good to soggy and gross. ----- The Breslin |
