Suggestions for solo dinner and date dinner

We'd take really good above everything else. I was able to get a reservation at Square Root for Friday night and we could go without cost guilt because it would be our Christmas present from my folks (we pride ourselves on eating well without spending a fortune when we travel). Do you think the experience is worth it. We LOVED Root last time we were in town.

Suggestions for solo dinner and date dinner

Hi all. I'm joining the hubs at the end of the month in New Orleans for a quick 2 1/2 day trip. He'll be working so I'll be on my own (sweet and precious solitude!) a good bit. I plan on eating at Green Goddess for lunch one day (went there last year & loved it) and thought I'd try Noodle and Pie for another lunch. I'd like suggestions for dinner by myself on a Thursday night and dinner for the 2 of us on Friday night. I'm not a huge creole fan (I don't dislike...just not my fave) and we'd like to try the newer places vs the old school, New Orleans classics. Last trip we did Root (jazz hands fabulous) and Irene's (ridiculous wait for meh). Thanks, in advance for help!!

Can you tell me where to eat in Asheville?

Thanks so much. @Miss Piggy, I've looked at the threads and my window is full of various menus! Breakfast and lunch are easy... We are adding White Duck Taco and Biscuit Head in to the mix. Thanks so much for giving me a couple of dinner options at a great price point. We're paying for everything so I was hoping to find a price point down from say, The Admiral. When you say Curate not for grandma and kids is that because of the food or the atmosphere? We travel a ton, so my kids are great in restaurants and 1 eats anything (I've stopped catering to the picky one). But I try not to take the kids to places where they aren't welcome.

Can you tell me where to eat in Asheville?

Factors to consider; 3 days, casual dress (city dwellers in jeans casual) 2 well behaved children (ages 5 & 7), one 75 year old mother-in-law from Bellingham, Wa who doesn't do dives, and my husband and I who strive to find awesome and affordable food wherever we travel. He's crazy excited to taste some good beer (I like my liquid red and jammy). We're really open to anything... except bad food. We live in Midtown West in Atlanta... I'll trade you recs! Thanks so much! BTW... heading into town the day after Christmas.

So here's a challenge...

Heading with my husband & 2 kids to Minneapolis to meet up with my husband's mom, brother & his family. They have 6 kids. There will be 5 adults and 8 kids. We dislike chains, but realize the dining limitations with 8 kids (ages 2 - 15). Any suggestions on places (not area specific as we'll be all over the place... not sure where we are staying yet) that are casual and affordable with good food? Delis, diners, pizza, ethnic, brunch, lunch, dinner?? I'd really appreciate some help!

1 night in Houston

Hi all. Picking the hubs up tonight at intercontinental and we have 1 kid less night in town before heading back to my folks and our kids on Galveston island. We know nothing about Houston. Right now we have a reservation at the Westin galleria but that can be easily changed. My husband has a meeting tomorrow downtown. I think Houston has a lot of sprawl? So we weren't sure where to stay, where to eat, etc. Looking for a a place with a cool atmosphere (we're 38), great food, independant, and not terribly expensive (where we could get out with wine for $100). I'm clueless, so please help!!! Thanks!

Need help with a weekend in New Orleans

Hi all...last minute request as usual! My hubs surprised me with a last minute weekend away without our kids. We love good food, fancy or casual, as long as it uses fresh ingredients, is creative, or just plain delicious. Any suggestions for lunch and dinner? If we can get reservations for 1 nice dinner out, where should we go? It doesn't have to be creole or cajun. Also, any good places to sit at the bar and have a good cocktail? We live on the westside of Atlanta, which is ripe with great farm to table restaurants, cool bars for grownups, and a bit of an industrial feel. We love that kind of vibe. Thanks for any help! I leave tomorrow so don't let me down! :)

restaurant suggestion Pentagon City area

Hi. We are heading into town (flight leaves in 10 or I'd peruse the threads) today and need some dinner suggestions for Pentagon City, Crystal CIty, Arlington Area. We are staying close to the pentagon for the weekend and don't want to drive too far. We have 3 and 5 1/2 year old girls, both well traveled, so while a restaurant needs to be okay with kids it doesn't need to be "kid friendly," as that usually means a mediocre dinner! All types of suggestions welcome... we are just looking for good food and a fairly relaxed atmosphere. Thanks so much!

First trip to the Islands for So Cal foodies...Orcas or San Juan?

We just returned from a trip to the San Juan's. We stayed on Orcas at the Rosario, which was great for kids. Their food was nothing to write home about. Rose's Bakery and Cafe' was fantastic. I could eat there everyday... Chimayo was delicious for lunch. We ordered the salad which was reallly good, with pepitas, black beans, rice, veg, guac, and beautiful greens. The burritos looked fantastic. One place we stopped for a early evening app and drink and I so wish we had been hungry enough for dinner was Doe Bay. It's out of the way, but the menu was absolutely beautiful... pescetarian (sp) and vegetarian. It's a little hippie resort, not fancy, but the restaurant was nice. We had wine, a cheese plate, and the thai coconut tomato soup with yogurt, basil, and cilantro garnish. Soooo good! I like Orcas way better than San Juan. Not as touristy, incredibly beautiful, and I can't wait to go back. Happy travels!

Does cooking steak from frozen make it retain its juices better?

Mmmm. 1 3/4 in ribeye frozen... placed directly in 130' sous vide... cooked for 2 hours and some change (extra hour for frozen), then seared in a super hot cast iron skillet. My house will smell like steak for 3 days, but it was great. Like butter...

Does cooking steak from frozen make it retain its juices better?

I've had a sous vide supreme for a few months now, with a many successes and a few miserable failures (marinades seem to do me in). I will buy Prime ribeye at Costco and freeze them individually. We love, love them in the sous vide, but I've always thawed them in the fridge. I'm going straight from the freezer tonight into the water bath... I'll let you know how it works. Any great sous vide suggestions would be much appreciated! I'm still learning.

prep ahead dinner for 8 help!

Hi. I've got dinner for 8 tomorrow night at my house. Not only do I have a 3 and 1 year old, but my kitchen is open to the dining area so I'd like to do most of the work before everyone arrives (today or tomorrow day) as I can't stand feeding people while staring at the giant mess I've made. I don't want to do something super casual like tacos or pizza... I'd like it to be somewhat refined. Any suggestions? There are no dietary restrictions and I have a moderate budget.
