Red Dragon cheese

I've seen it on occasion at the Wine Shop in Reading, but it's been a while since I looked for it.

Catered afternoon tea?

I had no idea the Public Library had afternoon tea. Looks interesting.

DD's Bavarian Cream donut, extinct?

Well, after reading this thread I had a craving for a Bavarian Cream donut. The DD off of I95 exit 42 in Wakefield had Bavarian Cream donuts this morning.

Is Venetian Moon in Reading / Can I bring a baby?

No, I agree with that assessment. I would have felt out of place dining there with my son...

Rick Bayless on NPR Wait Wait...

I googled to find details on Rick's show after hearing Wait Wait. It is kind of an interesting idea. He's going to be cooking a three course meal during the show and the audience will be eating the dishes he cooks.

Looking for really delicious sandwiches (platter) for a party

If you're willing to go to Middleton ( just beyond the N. Reading line) Sol Bean Cafe would be a good idea. I have never had catering from there but their food is interesting and high quality.

Looking for... your best sweet potato casserole recipe?

I don't have a recipe since I eyeball things generally, but my mom always tops hers with combination of corn flakes mixed with brown sugar and melted butter...

Husband is having gallbladder removed

I'm relieved by the feedback here...Google was full of people with all sorts of post op problems...

Thanks!!!

Husband is having gallbladder removed

Hi all,

There is a good chance my husband is having his gall bladder removed. I know that there are dietary restrictions afterwards. Any suggestions for yummy ( and quick - as I have a job and two children in addition to my husband) food to make for him?

Winter CSA Help Needed

I have the same question. My CSA is not distributing next year I am interested in participating in First Light and I am interested in the winter CSA as well. Pastrytroll, how large is your family? For me it would basically be me and my husband participating so if it is a good size for a family of four it might be too much...

CSA Rating

I would second a 5 star rating for Luna Farms. Wonderful produce, good communication, and good variety.

Canned Tomatoes; check to make sure Calcium Chloride is NOT an ingrediant!!

I'm guessing what they did was taste it straight out of the box (as opposed to use it in recipes). Lots of other brands have lots of salt, and Pomi is pure tomatoes. I love using pomi...and no BPA in the packaging is a big plus too.

ideas please for sack lunches that are...

Perhaps, but since the Ms Bento is insulated I can keep cold food cold and warm food warm (as opposed to room temperature)

ideas please for sack lunches that are...

I pack lunches for my 3 year old to have at day care and he doesn't go for sandwiches either.

Instead of a thermos try a Ms. Bento:

The compartments provide a lot of flexibility, and when properly prepared the food stays warm (though I have to say, not piping hot) until lunchtime. I generally give him some combination of pasta/veggies/dumplings/fruit/chicken/etc.

At-Home Indian Catering?

These folks in Burlington Cater and the couple times I went they were good.

Verdict on the slimcado?

You know, I noticed these in the supermarket the other day and was wondering the same thing.

Google and ye shall receive:

http://blog.homemade-baby-food-recipes.com/what-is-a-slimcado-and-should-my-baby-eat-it/

From the article:
"SlimCados are green skinned Florida avocados which have grown down here since the turn of the century (18th to 19th that is). Brooks Tropicals has sold them since 1928"

Who makes Bun Cha?

Forgive my ignorance, but what is bun cha? Do the Bun cha gio and Bun thit Nuong Cha gio at Pho 1 Woburn count?

I Pazzi, Danvers

I went to I Pazzi today with my husband, my brother, and my (3 year old) son for lunch. The lunch menu was limited, but very tasty. My brother and I had puttanesca linguine, my husband had pasta carbonara, and the kitchen made a plate of penne with red sauce. The rolls we were given first were fresh and tasty and the pasta was cooked well. We called ahead of time to make sure they would be willing to accommodate toddlers and they were very welcoming. The desserts were very good - we had a chocolate mousse and some Mille Foglie. All in all a good experience - we'll likely try it again sometime. My son told me it would be great if we lived next to the restaurant.

Ritu Ki Rasoi in Burlington

My husband picked up some food for me the other day from here and I thought it was pretty good. That being said, my knowledge of "authentic" Indian food is rather nonexistent...

They have a list of items on their menu here: http://www.ritukirasoi.com/menu

They also have weekly specials with different dishes.

What to order at Mary Chung's?

Went the other day and had a good time.

The Suan was as good as I remember. My son, the pasta-tarian, had chicken lo mein which he liked. My husband and I got the spicy velvet chicken - which we both enjoyed, the baby bok choy - which is hard to mess up, and the mongolian beef - which was OK but a bit overcooked. I'll have to come back for dim sum sometime...

What to order at Mary Chung's?

Thanks for all the replies! I'll go in well prepared...

What to order at Mary Chung's?

Meeting a group of old friends at Mary Chung's. It's been ages since I've been there. Other than the Suan - which I will definitely be getting - what would people recommend ordering?

Food for a Pregnant 'hound

I'm in my 3rd trimester. I found that peppermint tea helped with my morning sickness.

I've been playing "better safe than sorry" for the most part with the food rules.

Deli meats are OK if you nuke them. I admit that every once in a while I slip though. I don't eat a ton of deli meat so it hasn't been a big hardship.

I've been avoiding raw fish - only cooked sushi for me :-( And, of course, no high-mercury fish

Generally speaking there is a lot of goat cheese which is pasteurized these days. You should check before discounting them completely.

I'll up your list one and state that I've been trying to avoid nitrites as well - which I find extremely difficult to do.

Ritu Ki Rasoi in Burlington

My husband was in the Burlington area and noticed the sign for a new Indian restaurant tucked away in Burlington. Anyone have any intel on it?

Breakfast in wakefield, reading or woburn?

Omelette Headquarters in Wakefield is good no nonsense diner-type food. I second Christopher's as well. For something in a calmer setting, Aroma Cafe in Reading was also good the one time I tried it.

Your top 3 choices for new Iron Chefs?

Puck was an iron chef for the very first Iron Chef America (the special where they brought ICs from Japan) and he was a blast to watch. As i recall he was clearly having tons of fun and was cooking circles around everyone else. It's been a few years though so not sure where his skills are these days.

THE NEXT IRON CHEF: "Seduction" (Season 3, Episode 7) [Spoilers]

Canora was definitely the clear winner. However, I was surprised to see Forgione over Tio and Tsai. Given that he had a dish that all three judges didn't like I was sure he was going home.

ISO White Peaches

I agree with Striper Guy. Peaches are in season here in July-ish and it will be near impossible to find good fresh ones right now.

Even in season, you are in the wrong part of the country to enjoy really really good peaches (white or otherwise). I grew up in South Carolina and the peaches in the south far outshine anything you can get up here. That's not to say you can't find them - you can - but if you're being challenged to a quality contest, this is the wrong part of the country.... Just my opinion. Others will probably disagree.

CSA 2011 Share for one person?

Check out Luna Farm. They have a Cambridge/Somerville pickup (though I'm not sure where since I pick up in North Reading). Lydia doesn't do half shares either, but she is willing to partner you with someone else who is also looking to split. I did that last year and it was well worth it. That being said, even the half share was too much some weeks for both my husband and I, but we eat out for lunch at work. I'm guessing that if you pack food for lunch it would be less of a problem.

Food kit for ten-year-old?

What a great idea! i know if you Google "making mozzarella kit" you get quite a number of hits. Some with reviews... Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
