San Diego - where are the best biscuits?
Wow, I totally agree with you estocastica. I also grew up in the SE US and biscuits are as important as sweet tea and BBQ! Speaking of BBQ, now there's a truly controversial topic for ya...even more so between fellow southerners!
Honestly, the best biscuit I've found in San Diego is, unfortunately, from the freezer aisle of Vons (I didn't realize there was a Popeye's in SD!). However, I can't wait to try the other recommendations in this thread.
San Diego brewpubs with good food
Definitely in agreement.
Interestingly, although I love beer, my desire for great food will always trump any hoppy elixir. Thus the ultimate experience is a brewpub with excellent culinary options. And I tend to like the more simple, comfort foods alongside my beers; Stone World Bistro is a prime contrarian example.
What are your favorite brewpubs in San Diego? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
San Diego hounds-- What do you do better than LA? (cheap!)
Don't get me wrong, Portland has some great brewpubs and it's one of my overall favorite cities on the west coast (is there anything more awesome than hanging out a Laurelwood in the summer?!). However, I believe the city's brewing scene tends to rest on its laurels a bit, whereas, San Diego continues to innovate and offer an unparalleled variety of styles. There was a time where Portland had everyone beat, but, IMO, those days are over (of course, this could always change). One prime example are the oak-aged ales that first emerged from the San Diego area a couple of years ago. Now many top breweries are following suit, and trying to catch up with San Diego in regards to this trend. I sampled my first oak-aged beer in San Diego, almost a full year prior to seeing a single brewery in Portland attempt the style...and frankly the effort was lackluster. I've still yet to taste a decent oak-aged ale to come out of Portland.
Bottom line, they are both excellent beer cities, that put just about every other city in the country (and, frankly, most of the world) to shame.
You're right about Pizza Port and its proximity to the beach; a slice of heaven for sure!
San Diego hounds-- What do you do better than LA? (cheap!)
Totally agree. In fact, I'd say San Diego (including North County) does microbreweries better than anywhere else in the entire country. And I've twice lived in the traditionally mentioned beer mecca, Portland, Oregon. When it comes to quality, variety, and ingenuity, San Diego has everywhere beat, hands down. Pizza Port, Solana Beach alone trumps most regions entire beer scene.
Late Night Eats - Solana Beach/Encinitas
Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
One quick question: in general, is it primarily North County that's an early closing area, or is this common across all of San Diego?
Late Night Eats - Solana Beach/Encinitas
Sorry to reply to my own post, but La Jolla, Cardiff, or Carlsbad would also work. Thanks!
Late Night Eats - Solana Beach/Encinitas
A college buddy is visiting San Diego for the first time, and his flight arrives around 9:30pm. I'd like to meet him in Solana Beach or Encinitas for a late night meal and drinks. I had a few places in mind, however, they all stop serving food around 10pm.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated? Thanks in advance for your help!
San Diego's Best Gyro
Thanks everyone for your inputs. Sounds like San Diego is just not the spot for Gyros (an item I learned to love on the East Coast). That's cool though; there's so many great options here. In fact, the first time I tasted a fish taco, I thought I'd never need to eat any other food item for the rest of my life. :)
Has anyone tried Greek Village Taverna in Carlsbad or Greek Corner Cafe, also in Carlsbad?
Btw, I've recently moved back to San Diego (Carlsbad actually) and I'm so happy to see such awesome discussions and recommendations here on CH; I think our fair city's culinary scene is improving everyday!
San Diego's Best Gyro
Has anyone found a really great gyro in San Diego? North County locations are preferred, but will gladly drive to other areas of the county.
Thanks!
