What did they serve at your wedding?

My husband and I were married in 1990 at the courthouse, with only my parents and brother as guests. We showed up first thing in the morning, wrote our names on the waiting list, and stepped into a courtroom when it was our turn. Afterward we went back to our condo and I fixed heuvos rancheros and a fruit salad for brunch, with my husbands favorite lemon bundt cake for dessert. Our wedding album includes a photo of me standing at the sink washing dishes after the meal.

Thanksgiving preschool potluck lunch

Many years ago, when I was a pre-school mom I learned from the teacher that kids love anything on skewers. At Thanksgiving we served cubes of roast turkey from the deli with cheese and fruit.

Cooking from the Time-Life "Foods of the World" series of books, anybody?

I had just finished college, and was living alone for the first time when these books came out. My parents generously gave me a subscription to the set, so I got them all, one at a time, as they came out. I've cooked from them continuously over the years, and I think my greatest triumph, back when I was in my 20's, was the "Roasted Boned Chicken with Pork Stuffing" pictured on page 148 of Pacific and Southeast Asian Cooking

Spritz Cookies

I inherited my mom's twist-type cookie press from the 1950's. She--and now I--have had great success by using margarine, keeping the dough at room temperature, and using an ungreased cookie sheet.

Restaurant to impress an eighteen year old?

I just put the question to my 21-year-old Bruin, and his immediate answer was "Korean BBQ."

Discontinued at Trader Joe's (started 6/19/2011) [old]

Yes I remember that bread! ( I'm in California and I know that bread products vary regionally.). I think it was made by the same people that made my very, very favorite honey whole wheat with poppy seeds that is also no longer around.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 3rd quarter 2011 [Old]

I like their new bran flakes. They're thicker and sturdier than some, so don't go soggy as quickly.

disgusting, I know, but.....I need a jello "salad" recipe....

My family normally would never eat Jello salad, but this one is a Thanksgiving tradition:

2 packages red Jello (any)
2 . boiling water
1 can whole berry cranberry sauce
1 can crushed pineapple
Optional:
Chopped apple
Chopped walnuts
Sliced celery

Dissolve Jello in boiling water. Stir in cranberry sauce. Refrigerate just until it starts to thicken, then add pineapple (and other things, if desired) then put back in fridge.

Can I substitute honey for molasses?

I've occasionally had recipes that called for either molasses or honey, but I didn't want their flavor. I've successfully used Karo.

potato pancakes

When I was growing up in the '50s my mother (a Nebraska farm girl) frequently made potato patties from leftover mashed potatoes (She'd make extra on purpose). She just mixed a couple eggs in with the mashed potatoes and cooked 3" patties on an oil-coated griddle. We ate them as a dinner side dish with butter and jam

Where can I buy Shark brand sriracha sauce in bay area?

Both! Actually, two of each. My UCLA son was also interested, and we'll take one of each to him when we visit next month. Husband and I did a taste test of both the new ones plus our standard rooster brand last night. The rooster is the hottest, with Uncle Chen's being second in heat. The Uncle Chen's seemed to have an almost smoky flavor, which my husband loved. My favorite was the Shark, which was the mildest and was sweeter than the other two.

Where can I buy Shark brand sriracha sauce in bay area?

Inspired by this thread, I went searching for Shark and Uncle Chen today in the South Bay. I found both at the Lion Supermarket on Saratoga, just north of 280. (471 Saratoga Ave., San Jose)

College dorm cafeteria food -- which ones are the best?

Our son is now a junior at UCLA. He's in an apartment this year, but spent the previous two years in a dorm. He was very happy with the food in general, and rotated among the various dining commons to take advantage of each one's specialties. He also occasionally visited the various fast food places on "the hill" that were included in the dining plan, eating Mexican, Asian, and Italian offerings. I ate in the commons several times and was impressed with the many healthy choices that were available, though one could certainly put on the famous "freshman 15" by making the wrong choices. UCLA seems to compare quite favorably with other schools that I've heard about.

Any "must get" food items that can travel back to States?

My British husband always brings back large quantities of Cadbury's chocolate bars, claiming that the authentic British ones are FAR superior to those made in the U.S. I'm partial to the cheap grocery store cookies...things like digestives and rich tea. Yes, you can find them in the U.S, but at great cost compared to in England...and they have more variety than you can find here.

OZ - Cairns, Sydney and NZ - Queenstown, Rotorua, Auckland - Suggestions?

We're Californians (son is a Bruin) who have traveled to Australia and New Zealand several times in recent years. Our favorite on-the-road lunch is to drive into any small town, find Main Street and then look for a local, non-chain bakery. Chances are they'll have a variety of homemade meat pies that are yummy.

What is this utensil?

This brings back a vague memory from my childhood in the 50's. If I'm recalling correctly, it's a tool to make drop cookies. You squeeze the handle together, scoop up some dough, and then release the handle to push the dough off onto the cookie sheet.
