Thousand Island dressing help, please

My recipe is close. Three parts mayo, one part mustard, mix well (mixing these two first prevents curdling), two parts catsup, then one part pickle relish. Mix well again. Yum.

My Yogurt Dilemma

honey!

Why do you continue shopping at CostCo? I am underwhelmed. What do you appreciate about the warehouse store?

We also cloth diapered and used cloth wipes, but save a ton of $ at Costco on other things, . Kids clothes, pj's, and books; fresh veggies, frozen waffles (the best teethers ever!), and now that the kids are a bit bigger things like hotdogs, peanut butter, and of course food for the grown-ups too. :)

Your Perfect Sandwich

Maybe it is your Portillos location? I find that the one in Tinley Park overloads the sandwiches to almost Jewish deli standards, it gets kinda ridiculous!

Say what?? Cooking comments that baffle you

Illinois here, and we learned a poem to go with it, which I still remember oh so many years later.

I've never seen a purple cow
And never hope to see one,
But if I should see a purple cow,
I'd rather see than be one!

Pesto Sauce from Costco

On a "lazy" night, it is a great addition to your favorite jarred spaghetti sauce. I know, sacrilege, but we've all been there.

A main course using fresh dill--other than salmon.

On a hot day there is very little better than a cold poached turkey breast with cucumber dill sauce. Add a fresh garden salad and you have the perfect meal, IMHO.

over-spiced Butternut Squash Soup - any ideas on how to fix this?

Can you dillute it? Add more stock to thin in out, and then add some sort of thickener. If you don't have any more apples and squash, try something neutral like potato.

Your Perfect Sandwich

I have to pick one? Oh, I can't!

An oyster po' boy, dressed of course

Chicago style Italian Beef, with both gardinara and mozzarella.

Day after thanksgiving, oh so good.

But I think the best of all may be what my local deli calls a "Smokey Joe". Challah, cream cheese, fresh ripe wonderful tomato, whitefish salad, and lox. Oh it is delicious. The cold sandwich along with a hot potato knish is enough to make me want to swoon.

Artichokes!!! Any low fat alternatives to butter with garlic & lemon????

The salad dressing of your choice works just fine. We love a remoulade sauce also.

Refills To Go at Sit Down Restaurants

I think it is very bizarre, but this new Vietnamese place has the most amazing tea, which you order by the pot. They put enough leaves in there to get 3 or even 4 pots out of it.

A friend and I each ordered our own pots of tea because we wanted different flavors our first time there. We each drank two whole pots and were near to floating after that and our pho.

The waitress however insisted upon brewing each of us a to-go cup (like a Venti size cup) with our tea leaves and fresh hot water. She then strained out the leaves, wrapped them in plastic wrap in case we wanted another after that, and gave us each the to-go cup of tea and the leaves.

It was the strangest thing, but also wonderful and generous.

We were quite flabbergasted, but pleased. We've returned dozens of times. I like to think that is more to do with the quality of the food, but I think the generosity might play a part as well.

First-trimester hounding

I couldn't handle any poultry at all when I was pregnant with my daughter. Just the thought made me ill. It made for an interesting thanksgiving. :)

Fair & carnival food

Oh yes! I can't believe I forgot the roasted corn.

Fair & carnival food

Pickles, the mushrooms simmered in amazing sauce all day long served in a styro bowl with a toothpick, hot sweet pecans, and fried green tomatoes. YUMMMMMM!

Milkbite. I know, it's a stupid name, but the strawberry and blueberry ones got me through several days when the thought of food made me want to lose it all the way to my toes.

Now, I'm not saying they are amazing, just amazing for 1st trimester. ;)

Remember, if you can get food into your system, the nausea does dissipate.

First-trimester hounding

Congratulations! I'm 14 weeks along, with my 3rd. Every pregnancy is different but what kept me going this time through the worst of the morning sickness (which is misnamed and can last all day) are these new granola bars I found in the dairy case. They each claim to have a full glass of milks calcium, and have to be kept refrigerated, but are yummy and don't stink up everything.

Oh, and I love getting california rolls for lunches. Somehow those never bother me.

Good luck, and just stick with it and take your vitamins. The worst of this sickness should ease up soon.

How are meals served in your home?

Yeah, I guess it does sound great, but at about 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon as I scurry around trying to sweep cheerios and tonka trucks off the living room floor and the oven dings that my challah is ready and I haven't yet washed my hair, I'm always tempted to just cancel the whole thing!

I change my tune at 5:30 when people start walking in the door though. Especially if it is a week where either my mom or sister actually makes the main meal! (We trade off on a 3 week rotation).

Broken fridge -- Worcestershire sauce

I don't refrigerate my Worcestershire sauce. I think it should be okay.

How are meals served in your home?

It depends on the day of the week. We always have dinner in the dining room, served family style from platters and bowls. No courses, just a meal of protein, vegetables, carbs, and lessons in table manners. Although often we eat in shifts as we have a 3 and 4 year old, and someone always seems to need to go potty again as soon as we sit down to eat! Or my husband's work phone rings and off he has to go to save the world's economy from imminent collapse via corrupt databases or some such nonsense.

Friday nights though are a different matter entirely. My parents and my sister and her husband come over. We start with cocktails and a small snack (like nuts or crackers with hummus) in the living room, then move to the dining room for wine, fresh baked challah (bread) and a first course of either soup or a salad, then we have the main course with sides, and then retire to the living room for a while. After conversation and relaxing some more, my sister gets the kids into their pajamas and we all return to the table to dessert and coffee (hot cocoa for the kids)

I love Shabbat dinners. They are the highlight of my week.

bean/chicken skillet dinner needs name

1thyme's chicken.

We almost always name dishes after their creator. :)

A Chicken Emergency.

I'd make a chicken cacciatori (I cannot for the life of me figure out how to spell that word!).

Non-casserole entree liked by adults and kids

Roast chicken with mashed potatoes. I've never seen a kid turn it down, and non-vegetarian adults love it too!

What Foods Do You Forego in the Name o' Domestic Tranquility?

I've also cut salmon from my recipe files due to DH's dislike. I still eat it out, and buy lox (which the kids and I adore), but no more poached salmon or grilled or the like.

Also, I can't remember the last time I made a chowder of any sort. He likes cream soups, but abhors chowder. :(

A Sour Cream Glut

"Syd's Potatoes" - thinly sliced potatoes layered with melted butter and salt and pepper between each layer. Sprinkle the top layer with paprika. Bake at 375 or so for an hour. Top with dollops of sour cream and serve as the perfect side dish for nearly any roasted meat. Also goes very well with poached fish.

Bananas and sour cream is an amazing breakfast.

Swirl 1/2 a pint of sour cream with a jar of your favorite salsa. Serve with a bag of tortilla chips. Serves 1 in my house. ;)

Have "Mexican" anything and top with sour cream.

Find a 3 year old, hand them a spoon and a pint, and step away quickly.

Applesauce in savory dishes (other than a side for pork chops...). Any suggestions?

Make latkes (potato pancakes)

Favorite Frozen Food?

Mmm. I think I know what dinner will be the next time the husband works late.

Favorite Frozen Food?

Ohhh, I never even thought about mixing it with noodles! Or anything for that matter, I always just zap it and then eat the whole damn thing myself when I'm alone or depressed. :) Now you've given me some great ideas!

Favorite Frozen Food?

Seriously? I bought the Dr. Praeger's kosher for passover fish shaped sticks for an easy passover meal and they were horrid! Among the worst foods I've ever eaten. They had the consistency of school paste. Did I do something wrong? I cooked them according to the directions, but they were really really nasty.

Favorite Frozen Food?

Stouffer's spinach souffle. OMG it is so good, like crack!

Passover cocktails?

I'm so glad! thanks for letting me know. :)
