Where to get good breakfast AND good coffee

Not a sit down breakfast place, but Gjelina Take away has good breakfast eats and good coffee. It's very hard to find good coffee at good restaurants for some reason.

The coffee at Huckleberry isn't anything special, but it's decent.

Best place you ate at this week?

Gjelina. You know what's really awesome at Gjelina? The ricotta gnocchi with honey, truffle, sage, butter sauce.

Spago, Gjelina, Pizzeria Mozza, Jitlada

All yummy!

Shanghai Kitchen has closed (SGV/Temple City)

The problem with the SGV is it lacks diversity. There is a bunch of cheapo Chinese restaurants but nothing like Melisse or Providence.

From LAX to Santa Monica - Where's the best place to eat?

August? You really plan ahead!

Anyway, I recommend Gjelina.

Santa Monica Seafood

I agree. The quality is inconsistent and sometimes very poor.

Are there any decent vegetarian tamale options?

I don't really recommend anything. I just thought it was worth trying.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi - the movie.

FWIW, there are several reports on the internet that he's a total jerk. Read this post and the comments below. http://www.andyhayler.com/show_restau...

Walked Out of Pacific Dining Car & Went to Taylor's

True. I've also had terrible food at Phillipe's and Clifton's. To be fair, Pacific Dining Car is better than these more downscale "old school" restaurants IMO.

Creative Sushi - Mori or n/naka?

Mori does not serve "creative sushi." It wouldn't surprise me if he finds the concept offensive.

Walked Out of Pacific Dining Car & Went to Taylor's

I think both restaurants are among the worst in LA. Together with Musso and Frank, they form a triumvirate of old-school, awful food.

The payola scandal at the Wine Advocate

If there's truth to these allegations, the lawsuit here should be WA subscribers against WA.

Which is better for making hummus: Immersion Blender or Food Processor?

Food processor.

Curious which is better from those who have been: Nishi-Ya or Go's Mart?

Mori and Go's Mart are night and day--polar opposites of sushi. Mori is quite traditional; Go's Mart quite untraditional. The quality at Mori is much better IMO, but Go's Mart can be more fun.

Good British Food...Is there such a thing?

Like some others above, I enjoy the take-out counter at Tudor House.

Sushi Mizutani - good, but overrated?

I, too, was disappointed by Mizutani. The sushi was, unsurprisingly, high quality. All the fish and seafood were excellent, as was the rice. However, the selection of fish was pretty mundane, though there was a notable emphasis on shellfish. As a quibble, two pieces of fish weren't cut cleanly and had stray hanging material. (This really surprised me.)

What disappointed me most was the price. I felt the omakase course was significantly shorter than that at most places, but the bill still came to 26,000 yen (without sake). For comparison, the bill at Sushi Saito came to 22,000 yen, and I felt the omakase course was about twice as long. Sushi Saito certainly offered much greater variety, and I enjoyed the experience much more.

Need fun, inexpensive ethnic restaurant on Westside/South Bay for party of 8

I would recommend Musha.

Good Beer Bottle Shop in LA

I agree with all this. Vendome and Wally's are best for scoring really hard-to-find beers.

99 for Vegetarians

Off Gold's list, I would add Zelo in Arcadia. I love several of their vegetarian pizzas (especially pesto), as well as their beet salad. I also like all of WestsideGal's choices above, though I'm not sure that Musha is so good for a strict vegetarian.

99 for Vegetarians

From Gold's list, here are some suggestions. I think you could order a terrific meal at any of these places without asking any questions or making any special requests.

Drago Centro

Fig

Gjelina

Mozza (both Osteria and Pizzeria)

Spago

Tasting Kitchen

There are plenty of other good restaurants on the list that are good for vegetarians, including several more downscale/ethnic choices.

Providence...very good, but disappointing

I was depressed by the quality of the seafood at Blue Plate Oysterette. I think you'd agree that the ceviche there is far inferior to that at Mariscos Chentes.

Salmon works well this way. It's very creamy and has a lot of inherent flavor.

Providence...very good, but disappointing

Personally, I find that the notion of cooking seabass at 120 degrees just screams "bland." The chef can aim for whatever he wants, but that doesn't mean we have to like it. More generally, I don't think that adoring the oh-so-precious food at Providence is a prerequisite for being a true foodie or Chowhound.

Los Angeles hounds to Tokyo in late December. Sushi and Izakaya recs greatly appreciated!!!

For cheaper sushi, try the omakase lunch at Manten Sushi in Marunouchi (near the imperial palace). It's about $40/person. I think it's better than what you can get at Sushi Gen for closer to $100/person.

For your anniversary, you might try Sushi Saito (three Michelin stars). I have only been there for dinner, but I understand that lunch there is substantially cheaper than dinner (as is so often the case in Tokyo). This blogger says it's only $65 or so/person, which seems pretty extraordinary. http://epicurious-deb.blogspot.com/20...
