Tomato Powder

Thanks Living4fun. There is a Penzey's in Dallas and I called them this morning and they said they didn't carry it. I'll call them again.

Tomato Powder

I'm going to try and make my powdered soup mix, among other things. Does anyone know where to buy tomato powder in Dallas?

Not festive enough?

Stew sounds great. Make something fancy and festive for dessert and appetizers.

Chili Powder

Thank you all very much. Do you recommend any other peppers that would be good? Chipotles? but maybe that is too smoky for chili.

Chili Powder

I have dried Arbol, New Mexico, Cascavel, and Ancho. I also have some Mexican Oregano, and Cumin Seeds. I plan to use my Vitamix to grind everything, although I do have a coffee grinder I use for spices. I read somewhere about roasting everything in the oven or in a skillet. I’m not planning on using garlic or onion powder, nor cinnamon and the like.

Chili Powder

Thanks smtucker. I actually did a search for Chili Powder before I posted. I was surprised nothing showed up. Maybe I don't know how to use the search feature properly.

Chili Powder

After searching the shelves for what I thought would be a good Texas Chili Powder without all the “natural flavors” etc., I decided it is time I started making my own chili powder. I grabbed a bunch of different dried chilies, and now I need a good recipe. Anyone want to share theirs?

Creme Fraiche

Does anyone know where I can get real Creme Fraiche in Dallas? I tried some when I was in Sweden and it was so delicious. I've looked at some of the Mexican grocery stores, but they don't taste the same.

Tortilla Press

The Elrods near me only had the small one. I ended up getting one at the Fiesta near me. It is a little bit bigger, but not 10" or 12". It was cheap enought to try it out.
Thanks for the info.

Food Safety Bill just passed US Senate!

Sorry, I don't have the stats on that or anything else. Have you read the bill? or at least a summary?
"(NaturalNews) Senate Bill 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act, has been called "the most dangerous bill in the history of the United States of America." It would grant the U.S. government new authority over the public's right to grow, trade and transport any foods. This would give Big brother the power to regulate the tomato plants in your backyard. It would grant them the power to arrest and imprison people selling cucumbers at farmer's markets. It would criminalize the transporting of organic produce if you don't comply with the authoritarian rules of the federal government."

Food Safety Bill just passed US Senate!

Have you read the bill?
"The new Food Tyranny Act — called the “Food Safety Modernization Act” in the U.S. Senate — has been passed by the senate today. It would give the FDA vast new powers to criminalize and imprison farmers and food producers while doing absolutely nothing to address to real root of the food contamination problem: Factory animal farm operations (which are regulated under the USDA, not the FDA)."

Tortilla Press

Does anyone know where I can get a tortilla press made of cast iron, with none of that silver paint on it? I’d like to find one that is either 10” or 12”.

Swedish Meatballs

Thanks. I've been there. It is mainly a store. I'm looking for a restaurant with all types of Scandinavian foods, mainly Swedish. My husband is from the Swedish speaking area of Finland, and I'd really like to take him out to eat Swedish, instead of me attempting to make it myself all the time. We have been to Ikea and stocked up on some of the same things he can get back home.

The Five Worst Thanksgiving Side Dishes

I’ve never heard of ambrosia made that way. We always made it with fresh fruit, shredded coconut, and pecans. It was always delicious. And giblet gravy, I love it. I wish my dad was still around to make it. Mine is pretty good, but his would be best. We never had mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving or Christmas. It was always candied yams. Yummy!!!(Not that marshmallow casserole stuff).

Fried Burritos

Thanks for the information about Allsups. There are none in my area, but if I'm ever near one, I'll definitely get one.

As for chimichangas, they might be fried, but with all the sauces piled on top they are soggy fried burritos. I want the kind you can pick up and walk or drive away with. No fork needed.
