The Dairy Queen's Profile

New Fuchsia Dunlop book

Yes, with one copy of the book in hand (yours) and many en route (all the rest of us), I think an official "cooking from" thread is in order!

Thank you for sharing your impressions of the book. Sounds very appealing! I'm very into home style cooking lately so this will fit right in.

Aarti Party

According to this link (and I have no idea whether it's a credible source or not), Aarti and Melissa D are working on a show together. http://wannabetvchef.com/?p=9213

Aarti Party

Sometimes I just think FN is simply trying to sponge up people's recipes (and Aarti had quite an inventory from her blog). If she can't maintain an audience or produce content after they've used up her existing recipes, well they cut her loose. Too bad. I thought her recipes were interesting, though I found her personality grating.

ETA: I wonder if this is the show they mean. It seems to me it's mostly Melissa's deal... http://thealternativepress.com/articles/melissa-darabian-talks-food-fitness-and-holy-c

Not to worry. I'm going to order mine from Amazon UK ASAP. I don't think I could wait for you to return from your multi-stop trip, even if you did have bigger luggage. I have to have my book sooner! I wonder why didn't I get my notice from Amazon that the book is in?

SO EXCITING! Tell us all about it!

Oh we could totally pool our funds for the cost of bigger luggage...

Brunch for Large Group in St Paul

I normally recommend Downtowner, but the one time I tried them for brunch it was expensive and awful.

I thought Heartland stopped doing brunch. Have they resumed?

Rusty Taco--First visit report

There appears to be a new something-berry (presumably a pinkberry knock-off) shop opening up on Grand Ave. North side of the street. West of Brasa, but I can't tell you how many blocks west.

And, yes, RT is an export from Texas.

ETA: ah, here it is. TruBerry. http://www.facebook.com/TruBerryFrozenYogurt

Awesome! I've had my eye on this place...

The Cookbook of the Month for June 2012 will be: The Homesick Texan Cookbook, by Lisa Fain

YAY! I've been hoping for an excuse to buy this book, despite my recent track record of not cooking. The Good Cook is having a bundle sale right now (but not free shipping, alas) and THT is one of the books available.

Thanks L. Nightshade!

Well, we should be able to check for ourselves soon enough!

Looking for the Twin Cities Best Calamari, suggestions?

I'd try Sea Salt. http://seasalteatery.wordpress.com/menu/

Are those recipes really from the new book? The smacked cukes and gong bao chicken sound a little familiar...

I need Level 2 Recipes...

Maybe we could cook from the Bittman summer list for July and August? June's not quite summer yet in Minnesota... http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/18/dining/18mini.html?pagewanted=all

How exciting! I can't wait to read all about the class! (Happy Birthday!)

Fried Chicken - Twin Cities

Hmmmm...I will have to pull out my map and figure out where Champlin is. I've sworn off of Skinners, which I recommended upthread about a hundred years ago. It's no longer a place I recommend.

Take care of your doggie issues. There will be plenty of time for cooking later!

~TDQ

I need Level 2 Recipes...

Ah, yes, I agree that this wouldn't mesh well with a CSA when you just have no idea what to expect in your weekly box of produce...

~TDQ

I need Level 2 Recipes...

That's great feedback about the scalability of the R.S. recipes, thank you!

Funny! I almost added a comment about BIttman's summer list in my post above and then backspaced over it.

I'm thinking about cooking my way through the Bittman summer list, too, but it doesn't have the advantage of the shopping list and I think what I personally need right now (can't speak for the OP of course) is a little bit of structure, with a week's menu and shopping list planned out... So, I'd figure I'd start with the Real Simple article and see how that goes... But the timing of Bitt'man's list would be very appealing say, for July and August...

Would you be interested in joining in?

I need Level 2 Recipes...

The reason I ask is (because of my miserable lack of participation in COTM recently) that I've been thinking about following Real Simple's "A Month of Dinners" for a month (it's 20 recipes, so "A Month of Weeknight Dinners" would be more accurate) and I wondered if you'd want to cook along with me. I figured we could do it almost COTM style where I would post a thread and we'd report back on what we tried and liked and didn't etc. And, of course, others could join in if they wished.

I notice most of the recipes have vegetables built in as you request. MOst of the recipes require only 20 minutes or so. And they have a built-in shopping list (with quanties) to streamline that part of it. I notice you mentioned you aren't great at the planning part, so I thought this might be helpful to you.

The one thing that might not work for you based on your OP is that most of these recipes seem to serve 4. But, since there are 30 days in a month and there are only 20 recipes I figured that would give you leftovers for the weekend and for lunches. I suppose you might be able to freeze some and/or cut the shopping list and recipes in half...

They actually have (I think) two other "a month of recipes" articles in their archices that we could continue on with if this seemed to be working for us. By the end of three months, or even one month, we'd have a pretty good list of quick easy recipes that we (hopefully) liked. But, first things first... I've tried a couple of their recipes and they are actually pretty good for the minimal effort required.

Whaddya think? Would you be interested in joining me for the experiment?

Jacquilynne, how is this going for you?

Soda Siphon help!

I just asked my husband if he's ever carbonated anything other than water in our sodaclub and he said he's tried orange juice. He said it foamed over. He thinks you'd have to leave a lot more headspace in order for it not to foam over, in which case it won't keep as long... I don't know if that helps.

~TDQ

Soda Siphon help!

I've never tried it, unfortunately. They say you aren't supposed to so I've not done it. But, if you try it, I'd love to hear how it turns out!

~TDQ

Soda Siphon help!

The carbonation actually lasts quite awhile. I don't know how long, but certainly for more than two days. I'm not sure what you mean by "has anyone added flavoring". If you mean, has anyone tried to carbonate anything but water, I have not. But I've done pretty well mixing carbonated water with other flavorings. That does, of course, reduce the carbonation though...

Rack Shack Ribs

Bah, there might be a lot of sauces, but if the few I tried are any indication they are all pretty much awful. The ribs are lousy, the sides are lousy. This place is a total dud.

JUNE Cookbook of the Month: FOODS and WINES OF SPAIN, Penelope Casas - All Recipes

This is from F&W of Spain? Funny, I've been going through this book (F&W of Spain) right now alongside Roden's Food of Spain and I'm actually tagging more recipes from F&W of Spain than from current COTM FOS. I think the latter is a little more accessible in terms of ingredient availability, which is super helpful to me right now.

Exhausted mom needs cook ahead meals for family or quick suppers for grab and go sports crazy kidss

To all of the fantastic ideas already suggested, I'm a fan of frozen quich and frozen ravioli for the kinds of occasions you describe.

~TDQ

Exhausted mom needs cook ahead meals for family or quick suppers for grab and go sports crazy kidss

chowser, I'm stealing idea #6. Also, it reminds me: I have a friend who does a weekly dinner swap with a neighbor where one night she prepares twice as much food and takes half over to her neighbor's house. And one night a week, her neighbor brings dinner over to her. I think real simple mag did a blurb on this. Let me see if I can find it.

Aha! Here it is: http://www.realsimple.com/food-recipes/recipe-collections-favorites/great-dinner-swap-00000000039507/index.html

cooking for toddler / fussy one year old - cookbook recommendations?

Most fruits, especially peaches, are very seasonal. Where I live, you can get nice, sweet, juicy ones only a few months out of every year. Frozen or from a jar are your best bet the other 9-10 months of the year... Plus, several of those fruits are ones I'd only buy organic of...
