Recs for gf-friendly places near the convention center

When you are GF and you are starving and trying not to get sick from eating something iffy (kind of GF), it's comforting to know that you can skip the guessing and go to a chain that has a certified GF menu. While it's great to be hip and go to the latest and greatest spots, your choices narrow significantly when you're dealing with food issues that make you feel terrible.

PF Chang is very near by and has a fairly large GF menu.

One more time! Weird shirts, merch, coffee, doughnuts, meat, and booze in Austin, go!

Trip report? I'd love to hear how your visit went.

What Austin-y gift would you send someone?

Friends from out of state are always in love with queso. there are plenty of brands of jarred/tub queso's although most of the good ones need to be kept cold (send with cold pack?). My son loves the TexaFrance brand the best.

Jaime's Spanish Village salsa is good too. You could send with some tortillas from El Milagro (located on E. 6th but sold everywhere).

There are amazing chocolate bars sold at Antonelli's that have toffee and candied fruits with nuts in them. I need to find out who makes those but I'm fairly certain they are local. Delicious and beautiful. Found it: http://www.chocolatemakersstudio.com/...

We took the Lammes Longhorns (may be what you're referring to) to a friend in San Francisco. He loved them.

Coming to Austin for the first time this weekend

By the way, Casino is "gentrified" food. Casino may have a Hispanic name but they are not a restaurant created in "old Austin" or of an ethnic Austin Family. My grandmother worked at Green & White grocery store for over 25 years standing right next to her sister while they made the famous tamales sold there. Just because Casino is run down and located on East 6th Street - WEST of I-35 doesn't mean it's grandfathered in as being "gentrified".

Coming to Austin for the first time this weekend

If you love sloppy, greasy burgers and seedy places, of course...go...squint your eyes and have a blast. You have your preferences and I have mine. I just thought I'd throw in my dos pesos so Weiszguy had a full picture of this place prior to going.

I've been in Austin for 47 years and my family has been here for 3 generations. Casino does not exemplify "Old Ausin" to me at all. Dirty Martin's, yes, Casino - absolutely not.

I agree with all suggestions except Casino. I simply do not understand the appeal of such a seedy place for a sloppy, greasy burger. Please don't waste your time on that mess.

Evening BBQ establishment?

We really enjoy Freedman's on campus. We sit at the bar and get the holy trinity; brisket, sausage and pork ribs. We've taken guests from San Diego, San Francisco and New York. Everyone had a great time and loved the BBQ.

Winery Recommendations Close to Austin

You must've been at Albert Hall. Coolest little dance hall. We fully intend to catch Aaron Watson, Cory Morrow or Kevin Fowler out there sometime. We stopped by there before we went to Garrison Brothers. Key is taking the back roads to get there. Such beautiful Texas Hill Country scenery.

Winery Recommendations Close to Austin

Not wine but Bourbon. Garrison Brothers in Hye is a great time! Great product, fun tour, beautiful drive to Hye. Be sure to make your reservation online before hand. There were tons of people showing up to go on the tour without a reservation and they were turned away because it was sold out.

Best Risotto in Town?

I have always enjoyed Asti. Report back and let us know how it goes. I've always found them to be a consistent neighborhood restaurant with friendly owners. We also like sitting at the bar and watching the open kitchen. I hope it works out for you as well.

best bakery for a birthday cake?

It happens all the time. They "bake" the cakes. It's a way to save money/time. They still custom decorate and at times they enhance the mixes or the fillings.

best bakery for a birthday cake?

Russell's isn't a scratch bakery. They use box mixes. When it comes to great cakes, I want one made from scratch.

Are we allowed to share horrible, completely unredeemable experiences here?

Threatening people with guns in and around ones home is not a culture of this state in particular. A story just today about a man in CA who put a gun in the face of a little girl going door to door selling cookies.

Not a Texas thing by any stretch.

The bad tacos were at Magnolia. I'll stick to Magnolia for breakfast only.

Adam's Extract Red Velvet cake mix

Agreed, simply not a fan of red velvet anything. It reminds me of the red velvet armadillo grooms cake from the movie Steele Magnolias. Funny but gross.

Chocolate violin

Um...not sure I want to know what that's about but a quick google of "Revolver Chocolate Mold" shows tons of options for less than $3.00. Maybe that cake supply place (The Frosting?) near 183 and Ohlen (across from Target) has one. Seems like it would be easy enough to buy baking chocolate, melt it, pour it in the mold and have your "piece".

Well, you know...it's an Austin thing. I was drunk when I went a few months ago. Food was good, people were nice. It was a great ending to a fun evening.

Omelettry

I've been there for tacos and they were terrible. I went there at 1 a.m. for breakfast after a fun night out and it was excellent. We had eggs over easy, sausage, bacon, fruit, avocado slices, jalapenos and toast. All simple, all easy and all delicious. They are a breakfast place for me. That's it.

El Patio is 60

I think I went there once with my parents in the early 70's. All I remember is they had saltine crackers in a bowl on the table with butter pats. Pre-chips & salsa I guess. I've never been there as an adult.

Adam's extract has artificial ingredients. You won't find it at Whole Foods. HEB/Central Market are your best bets.

What's unique in Austin?

We still have violet sunsets now and again. Austin is a clean air city. We don't have manufacturing plants here like say, Houston. We get smoke from Mexico during their burn off season but this is no LA.

Has anyone else been yet? I have a friend who went and she said it was good but all of it was spicy. Has anyone tried the catfish listed on the menu?

What's unique in Austin?

The online food section of Texas Monthly currently lists information about Texas Caviar, Koloches, Mole Poblano, Tamales, Pecan Pie, Corny Dogs, Dove, Barbacoa, Chili (no beans), Frito Pie, 1015 Onions, Ruby Red Grapefruit ...a good read for someone interested in uniquely Austin or Texas food.
