Cocktails in NOLA

I wanted to give a +1 to Coquette. You can sit at the bar, have a few yummy drinks and some apps. Plus, Alley (sp?) is an excellent bartender!

I recommend the Delachaise not so much for cocktails, while they do them well, they aren't artisinal, handcrafted, etc. What they do well is atmosphere. And their prices are very reasonable.

I find Cure to be so pretentious that I won't go there anymore.

Loa was making some great cocktails last time I was there. The bartender from Clever was infusing his own liquors and making some really creative stuff.

Hush Puppies in NOLA?

Personally, I've always liked Zea's hush puppies: very crispy and moist.
Another spot that I've enjoyed hush puppies recently was Bouligny Tavern, they are more cakey in consistency but served with a pate and tomato jam that makes them quite yummy.

Chili in NOLA?

Now that the cold weather has been ushered in, hopefully for longer than a week, I'm craving chili. I've sought it out in years past, but never found a steamy, rich bowl of goodness.

I'm not talking about the stuff you put on nachos or hotdogs or comes from surreptitious can labeled with the words "Dinty Moore" here's what I want:
A bowl of hearty, tomato-based, meaty, well-spiced chili, beans optional. Preferably, it would be served in a large bowl with some cheddar cheese grated on top, a few scallions sprinkled around and possibly some sour cream dolloped on top, too.

I believe the only place I've been in the past few years that had chili was Maspero's and it was only a small cup on the side.

pre-K delivery service?

I was lamenting to my husband the other night that I wanted a particular entree from a local restaurant but hadn't any desire to shower and dress to go to pick it up or eat at the restaurant.
He said that pre-K a delivery service of some sort existed that would deliver food from restaurants that didn't have their own service setup.
Does this still exist in some incarnation around the Uptown area?
Did anyone use the service before K?

Delivery?

Roma Cafe delivers. Not that I recommend the food but when you're hungover sometimes delivery is better than taste.

My go-to right now is Reginelli's.

It's hard for me to believe that the food delivery market isn't recovered yet:(

oh and let us not forget the cocktails

So far you've listed mostly traditional cocktails but I wanted to throw in a recommendation for a place with really creative cocktails: Coquette. It's on the corner of Washington and Magazine uptown.
Another joint that you might enjoy for creative cocktails is Cure up on Freret

I'd second Pravda for absinthe; during the afternoons it's relatively quite so you can sample and talk with the bartender about different kinds.

I haven't been very often but Mr. B's makes a nice Brandy Milk Punch, which can just the right cocktail to cool you down since the weather is getting so darn warm.

Stella! is out, need a fantastic Monday night Trip Ender

In terms of atmosphere I think Coquette would probably be more to your liking. They aren't superduper casual but I've never felt overwhelmed by formality sitting at the bar trying all their yummy cocktails.

Favorite Mojito in NOLA?

Had a coupla mojitos from Margaritaville during FQF. Now I can't get them out of my head. Hounders, who serves your favorite mojito in the city?

Dinner at Coquette 4.8.2010

JazzyB, the tequila drink you are referring to was called the Kahlo (maybe Khalo). It was probably one of my most favorite cocktails ever. Whatever the new drink is, Evil Wedding (or something to that effect) is not nearly as tasty.
If you return ask them if they have the ingredients for the Kahlo and they will make one for you. It's the kefir-lime syrup they usually don't have.

Taking the Fam' ta lunch

My aunt and niece are coming into town tomorrow and want a late lunch. They are staying on Poydras so we have lots of options and accessibility. When I queried my Aunt she said "local dives", I've not heard back about what exactly that entails.
Assuming she means just local joints, not too upscale, where would you go?
I think they are down with walking or a short drive from their hotel, but I'm at a loss for the goldilocks restaurant in this case.

Good place to eat within walking distance of Rock 'N Bowl?

I know that Rock n Bowl serves food.
I think Juan's Mid-City location is across the street-ish from Ye Olde College Inn too. I prefer Juan's to the Inn.
I can't think of any other places in that vicinity.

Fresh ham problem

I've tried availing myself of knowledge in previous posts regarding fresh ham but couldn't find anything to answer my question.
I have a fresh ham I am planning to prepare for TG. The problem to meet my request for an 8-10lb ham the stores removed a good deal of skin and fat from one of the sides. I'm now afraid it'll dry out while I roast it. I thought a tin foil cover might help prevent drying but not sure that'll be sufficient.
Is there a way I can protect it and still have moist, delicious ham?

Brigstens & Upperline

DH and I bike to Ignatius on lazy Saturday afternoons. DH loves their roast-beef po' boy. They often have a boudin meatloaf which is a favorite of mine. Its a quaint little place, when the weather is nice you can enjoy sitting outside. I would definitely recommend it since it is near your place of lodging.

Flagstaff recs

I'm in Flagstaff for a week. I've seen the usual chain restaurants but am looking for some more local cuisine. I'm good for almost any type so long as it is done well.

Best Bar Burger

Yo Mama's.

Food preservation classes

Culinas, thank you for posting that. I can't make it but I will continue to keep an eye out for future ones.
P.S. I have no idea why my original post shows up 4 separate times :(

Food preservation classes

This is not restaurant related but pertains to food in N.O.
I'm interested in canning classes and other food preservation techniques.
Does anyone on the board know of workshops offered in NOLA?

Near West Fork/ Fayetteville

Will be in town this weekend with DH and a good friend of ours. Are there any can't miss pizza joints? What about BBQ?
Entertaining all options:)

That's Arkansas in case there another southern West Fork/ Fayetteville area.

Where would you refuse to eat in NOLA even if your brother in law was paying?

I have to agree about Andrea's. They keep their red wine chilled "because of Katrina". However, they did have the BEST cheesecake I've ever had in my life.

Pork belly

Who sells it in the NO area? I'd like to try my hand at cooking some.

Good N.O. Restaurant with Bar Seating

I was thinking that perhaps Mr. B's would fulfill your requirements. They have a nice bar, good food and atmosphere. I have no been for dinner so atmosphere maybe a little different for the dinner crowd.

Chad's Bistro

I've been a couple times. It doesn't impress me much. It isn't bad mind you, but I'm one of those people who hate to drive to Metairie unless it's for a good reason. (Note: My subsequent visits were necessitated by factors other than food) My biggest complaint about the place: Their bar is separated from the main dining room so that bar patrons can smoke. This means every drink or beer you order smells heavily of smoke. I do, however, commend them for having a partitioned and separate ventilation system for this.

Hey Ya'll

If tequila is in your repertoire then I suggest a trip to Yo Mama's. It's on St. Peters between Bourbon and Royal Sts. My current favorite is the Chinaco Anejo. They also serve delicious burgers.

French Quarter Festival - Food Stands

Woot Flour Power! Friday we had the Praline Creme Brulee and (my memory fails me suddenly) but it was a white cake with berries. So delicious. However, the Abita beer was WAY off. We just skipped down to the Crescent City Brewhouse and grabbed a coupla weiss beers to go. :)

Gott Gourmet

Mmmm...Mmmmmm...mmmmmmm
I had the Gott Salad. So yummy full of blueberries and strawberries, a nice mix of greens, some candied pecans, cherry 'maters and raspberry vinaigrette but the showstoppers were the fried Brie sitting atop and oozing out warm, crunchy, delicious brie-y goodness. My only complaint: What is the purpose of serving salad on a plate? I spend so much darn time chasing stuff around the plate. This complaint is more generalized than specific to this particular place.
I was hungry, so I ordered the Cochon du lait Cuban panini as well. I'm stuffed! I prefer my cuban-esque sammich on crunchy bread, but it hardly took away from the delicious taste of this messy lil booger. Their website menu can offer you the details regarding ingredients. It isn't a traditional cuban, so don't expect one, but DO expect a really great sandwich. It was also a nice contrast to the similar, but much less satisfying Cochon du lait Cuban I had at Butcher a few weeks ago.

Pizza in NOLA - where?

The two LPK restaurants were formerly owned by the same couple, but a messy divorce got them each their own LPK (so I was told by a waiter at the FQ location). They both carry similar dishes, but I have yet to try pizza at either. FWIW, I prefer the atmosphere and some of the dishes at the FQ LPK.

Best Cocktails, Not for the College Crowd?

I wanna go! I just found their link the other night through the Blackened Out blog.

I find the atmosphere at the Delachaise to be pretty good people watching. However, they allow smoking which most of these other recommendations do not. And their cocktails are hit or miss.

Pizza in NOLA - where?

Theo's or Slice get my vote. Both good pizza joints.

cochon's Butcher - take 2

I checked this place out about a week or so ago. I, too, had the Cochon du lait Cuban and found myself and my tastebuds disappointed. I kept thinking "surely there is some delicate flavor I'm missing", but even if there was... Cubans should have robust flavors!
As ironballs mentioned though, this a new venture and I"m willing to to give it another go after they've matured.

Progressive Friday Lunch

Oh my.... a white russian desert. Now that's a concept in and of itself I can get down with. But where is Touche'? My googlefu fails to find anything but a Touche' Cafe in Lakeview :S
