I've peeked in through the side windows, and it's looking good. Hopefully within a few weeks - I want my banh mi! :)

Boerum Hill Food Company closed

I'm so sad to hear about BHFC - the employees were always very nice to me.

On the upside, those in South Slope are able to buy Stumptown Coffee at Roots Cafe. Thank goodness - it's a lot closer to me than the now-defunct BHFC.

Tastykake and other Pennsylvanian Goodies.

I've seen 'em in both Manhattan as well as outer boroughs.

slices of cake from Baked... without traveling there.

Please, I beg of you... help me on my cake quest!

My goal: a slice of cake from Baked in Red Hook... without having to go there.

Don't get me wrong, I genuinely would rather head to their shop and pick something from their cases. However; I don't own a car (or hold a Zipcar membership) and I'd rather not have to drag my infant daughter there and back on the bus.

So yeah, does anyone know where I can buy a slice of Baked's cake? I searched the boards and noted that Tazza carries Baked cake, but would also be very happy if people could tell me of other places that sell it, too. I'm not very interested in their cupcakes (which I know Blue Apron sells) - nothing will do for me right now but a big honkin' slice of cake!

Help? :)

toppings at Franny's: I complain because I care.

Okay, I'm a fan of Franny's. Really, I am - I live in the neighborhood and eat there when my wallet allows me the pleasure. My favorite Franny's pizza is the white clam with chiles, though I like pretty much all of the pizzas on their menu.

Regardless...

Am I the only one who's noticed that their toppings haven't meaningfully changed in ages?

Franny's serves small plates and salads featuring the fresh and seasonal. So why aren't those seasonal ingredients on their pizzas, gosh darn it?

Please tell me I'm not insane with this, huh? Am I the only one who's noticed the fairly static pizza selection?

I have no idea, but it's possible - after all, this post is about 3 years old at this point. :)

Skordalia

I'm looking for skordalia, too! I'm reviving this topic, as the responses are 2 years old. Any updated recommendations?

Where did my cheap Indian buffet go on Fulton (Financial District)

Is it the Indian place up the stairs at 88 Fulton? I ask, because I ventured in there on Friday, and... no buffet! I was confused and wandered away again in disappointment. That buffet hit the spot in so many ways!

Never eaten there, but every time I walk by the place I think, "Bob Law's Law Blog!" :)

Green Mountain Coffee: large selection

I'm looking for Green Mountain Coffee. My local supermarket carries 2 "Newman's Own" blends. What I need is a larger selection - a store that carries at least a good 10-15 of the flavors. Does D'Agostinos still carry it? (My local one went under a few months ago, but I'd not been there in ages.) Does anyone know of anywhere else where they carry a large selection? Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn preferred, but I'm not too picky. :)

Best iced coffee?

Does anyone have any reccs for the Financial District area? Overall, I'm a fan of Klatch (Porto Rico coffee, indie, etc.), but I've grown a bit disenchanted with their iced coffee. Sad to say, I'm sipping a Starbucks iced coffee at my desk right now. Can anyone suggest a really awesome iced coffee without the trip to Soho/the Village?

Abita Beer

Ancient post, but I've another place to check: Bierkraft, on 191 5th Ave in Brooklyn. They definitely sell a few different Abita beers.

Schweinshaxe?

The Heidelberg Restauarnt lists it on their menu.

I've never been, so I can't vouch for their quality... but they do serve it.

Baked Zizi Pizza

I've found myself with a yen for baked ziti pizza.

Can anyone share their favorite spot for this seemingly uncommon specialty? Bonus points if the pizza place is located in Brooklyn or below 14th St in Manhattan.

Thanks!

I'm a fan of Cousin John's croissants, as well. When I eat there on Sundays, they serve 'em hot. Mmmmmmmm...

Where can I find some Mofongo?

Actually, Gran Castillo also serves a cheese mufongo and a chicken mufongo. Delicious, too.

Actually, they *do* serve beer:

Of course, the point is moot as they're closed for the winter. :)

Beer bar in park slope or prospect heights

Close to the park up Flatbush? Beer bar? Not much of an option, there. I'd really, truly recommend The Gate - it's by far the best for good beer-centric selection. A close option is Soda - pretty decent selection, $3 draft happy hour every day til 8PM, and is at Flatbush and St Mark's.

Late Night Eats in Park Slope

200 5th is open later than a lot of stuff in the neighborhood. (5th Ave and Union) (Mon-Wed til 1AM, Thurs til 2AM, Friday and Sat til 3AM, and Sun til 1AM) I discovered this when a friend visted from the West Coast, and wasn't going to hit the area until midnight. What a PAIN to find a place open at 1AM on a Thursday and serve you non-burgers and a beer, let me tell you. :)

Ok..I have to get this out in 2006..I HATE TRADER JOES

The frozen fruit is also much more reasonably priced than at the other shops in my area (NYC-Brooklyn). When I go there, I always have to buy a few bags for my spouse.

Baked in Red Hook

Wow. I've been to Baked a handful of times, and have never experienced any rudeness from their staff. Having worked in service-oriented industries my entire adult life, perhaps I'm immune to a low level of rudeness. However; I've never experienced it at Baked and I'm far from being a "regular" there.

I guess anything's possible, though i just can't see NYU giving *anyone* a deal on rent. Aren't they known as being hard cases in situtions such as this? Just weird. :)

I'll second Trattoria Delia. Every meal I've had there has been really good, without even the "...for Vermont."

Park Slope Recommendations

The last time that my spouse and I ate at Beso, we decided that it was our last visit. At brunch, at least the last 3 times we've eaten there, the server's taken an exceedingly long time to get our coffee to us. When I write "exceedingly long time", I mean it - we'd order plain old coffee and our brunch items. We'd wait... and wait... and wait... at least 20 minutes, maybe even 30. We'd beg multiple times for our coffee, and be nonchalantly told, "oh, he'll be over in one minute with your drinks." Every single time, our drinks would show up literally 1-2 minutes before our brunch. It sounds like a very small thing, but I find this *completely* unacceptable for brunch. It's coffee! It takes 30 seconds to pour! Why this takes 20-30 minutes is completely beyond my comprehension. The last time this happened, my spouse declared Beso's death to us... which is a real shame, as their brunch is really decent.

Deli Sandwiches!

I nearly forgot! If you eat at Katz's, tip the guy making your sandwich. He'll give you a nice slab of pastrami to nibble on while you wait for him to finish his work.
