Shrimps not "smooth" after boiling (or poaching) for shrimp cocktail
I clean the raw, in-shell shrimp by cutting through the back of the shell with manicure scissors and pulling out the vein with a crochet hook. I then boil the shrimp in the shell, cool and peel. Perfect every time. The shell protects the delicate meat and keeps it from getting that gnarly, shaggy look.

I think the OP's mention of opium might be a clue.
Thousand Island dressing help, please
My mother's recipe: twice as much Hellman's mayo as Heinz catsup, as much sweet pickle relish as you like. Keep it simple.
Dover Sole
This might be their usual practice, but when I ordered it last November, they brought the fish out already filleted, and as I said above, I really do not believe that it was Dover Sole. I was shocked that they would do such a thing, but they did.
Dover Sole
I ordered Dover Sole at La Grenouille last fall, and I'm pretty sure that is not what I got. I was presented with a fillet, not the whole fish, and it tasted pretty much like nothing. If you're paying the price, I suggest you demand that the fish be served whole, so that you can assure yourself that it is the real deal.
Dover sole
Don't bet on it. The NYT did an expose not too long ago about well-respected restaurants doing just that.
General question regarding formal dining service?
If a choice has to be made, the lady is served first. If no choice has to be made (there are enough servers to serve all diners simultaneously), then everyone being served at once is perfectly fine.
your favorite food movie..
Went to see this yesterday, based on your rec. Loved it! Thank you.
Movie Theater Snacks
I believe it, and I also believe that movie theaters are going to be a thing of the past in 10 years or less.
Can you Mail Oreo Truffles?
You could certainly do it overnight with a little chunk of dry ice.
Weekend lunch w/ baby
You just have to be prepared to leave if he becomes impossible. Our second little bundle of bliss (bless her heart) not only fussed, but fussed in the high key of an opera diva. Very painful, and certainly not to be tolerated by fellow diners. (I'm happy to report that she is now a fully-functioning adult with a sophisticated palate.)
Movie Theater Snacks
I'm in Bloomington, Indiana, and the "small" popcorn was about a quart, the the "small" coke was about 24 ounces.
refused to eat, out of line?
I believe you are right. I make a chocolate mousse pie with raw eggs. (I now use pasteurized shell eggs.)
Weekend lunch w/ baby
Depends on the baby. We could take our first anywhere -- he would sleep the entire time. Our second would scream the entire time, so we mostly ate at home until she grew a tad more self-controlled.
Movie Theater Snacks
The family is out of town, so decided to go to a movie this afternoon. Hadn't had lunch, so bought a "small" popcorn and a "small" coke. $10.50 (my ticket was $7.50.) Enough popcorn and pop for 4 people. Granted, I haven't bought food in a movie theater in decades, but I was quite taken aback. Is this really considered something to be eaten by one person?
a little help for watermelon
This is why it's a good idea to wait until it's in season.
Attire when fine dining in Madrid and Barcelona
Last trip to Europe was 4 years ago, but I'm pretty sure that I did not see any European men wearing trainers, shorts, or t-shirts in any restaurant. Nice jeans, decent shoes, dress shirt with rolled-up sleeves in hot weather seemed to be the norm.
"Least Favorite Vegetable" Poll
A link wouldn't work, as you need to be a paid subscriber to read our paper. What I can do is cut and paste my (unedited) copy after the column is printed next Wednesday.
refused to eat, out of line?
"Failing to reheat the food to 165 degrees F for fifteen seconds within two hours."
That is one of the temperature dangers listed by servsafe.
There is a huge difference between taking a chilled item from the fridge and letting it sit on the counter for 4 hours before cooking, and partially cooking an item and letting it sit for 4 hours before finishing cooking. At any rate, unless it's a huge roast that needs to come to room temp before roasting, I'm sticking with the U.S. government's recommendation.
refused to eat, out of line?
No, it's 2 hours, and unless the burgers are cooked well-done, the results could be very unpleasant, indeed.

"Least Favorite Vegetable" Poll
Just put it to bed, and thanks to all the Hounds who posted, I had plenty of grist for my mill. This whole thread was fascinating to read; I knew that there would be plenty of beet, Brussels sprouts, and okra haters out there, but was surprised to find that there are folks who don't like corn on the cob or cooked carrots. Thanks for your input, guys!
Alternative to Vitamix blender
A Vitamix is a lifetime investment. I've had mine for over 20 years and use it frequently.
If you are invited over to friends' home for dinner...
This thread is so long I don't know if I've posted before. If so, I'll repeat myself: no one has ever turned up their nose at a gift of excellent olive oil or vinegar.
Vegetarian sub for duck in smoked duck lasagna? No soy/fake meat.
I would sub a layer of creamy beans, such as flageolot. Also add a few dashes of liquid smoke.
