Trader Joe's YAY/MEH/NAY - August 2014 [OLD]

The Speculos cookie butter ice cream is ALSO featured on the website "what's good at Trader Joe's?" very recently...ha! They give it 9.5 points out of 10 possible points...sheesh...sounds over-the-top-delish!
(DANGER! DANGER! going off in my head...hee hee!)

ohhhh...the TJ almond butter is banned now with me...I could sit down and eat some for dessert every night...I've had the raw, unsalted unsweetened...it is like crack to me. I realize it's a healthy food in moderation but it pushes buttons with me like crazy...I can control myself with my beloved Smucker's Natural PB but that TJ's almond butter is beyond belief. Now, should I even consider the cashew butter?? uhhhh...I want to say "IX-NAY"

Wow, I've found the OPPOSITE to be true on TJ's cut flowers...my son gave me 7 gorgeous red roses last Friday (8/15) for my birthday...and they are STILL vibrant...not drooping at all! And I bought myself a 4th of July bouquet and it lasted about 1 week! Just saying, I think their cut flowers last longer than anything I'd get in Publix (our big grocery store here in FL).

The Bagel Before It Ballooned

Ha! I was JUST a few moments ago talking to my son about bagels...I am originally from Northern New Jersey (Hackensack) but have lived in Florida since 1988. The bagels you get down here are about as big as your head and doughy...AND they make raisin cinnamon and all kinds of sweet versions ...quite an abomination. But whatever...nice to see Baz's sticking to tradition, thank you very much. (and my co-workers cut the bagels VERTICALLY sometimes and don't even toast them...nooooooooooooooooooooo!) LOL!

What does "eating healthy" mean anymore?

I beg to disagree with you sandylc...the #1 killer of men and women in the U.S. is heart disease; sugar or too much of it is the ONLY cause of heart disease? No way; saturated and transfats are huge contributors to CVD.

What does "eating healthy" mean anymore?

Really? Only sugar? Not salt and oils? See, here we go...depends on one's opinion of what's healthy, just gently saying. :-)

Do you watch you tube for cooking?

I've always loved that little Maangchi (Emily Kim)...she's adorable and her recipes are pretty darned good! Have become more interested in raw vegan preparation lately (so it can't really be called cooking I guess). Dara's pretty good and I find her videos quite uplifting too.

Mary, I blend mine up with strawberries and cranberries...have read that the wild organic blues are the best as far as antioxidants & fiber...so truth be told, haven't tried them on their own due to the blended mixture I eat 4-5 times each week for breakfast. Thank you!

I usually buy the wild organic frozen blues at TJ's but right now I do have the boreal ones since they were out of the wild organics...very good flavor, I will say! berries are a huge part of my life! VERY high in antioxidants!

Healthy Vegan Substitute For Coconut Oil

And my internist specializes in lipids...he does NOT recommend coconut oil or ANY extracted oil, just gently saying. I do love coconut oil as a skin moisturizer though...have been using it for years!

What are the most educational cooking shows?

I really also LOVED Sara's old show on the old Food Network...sheesh...it was a very good network when it first started...Essence of Emeril was also great until he became so silly; I became embarrassed for him with Emeril Live. I bought my first cast iron pan and made my first roux due to his Essence show. Anyone know where I can find some old Essence shows? They are not on youtube. Thanks!

Fresh herbs--do you have them, how do you use them?

There's really nothing like walking outside and harvesting fresh herbs or collards or any such green plant to eat fresh! The chlorophyll is SO good for us...nice to see so many 'hounds enjoying herb gardening!

Cooking When You are Poor

Why even keep buying meat? Just my 2 cents. Dried beans and rice are very cheap...for your greens, buy what's in season or on sale and/or try growing some even if all you have is a sunny windowsill. :-)

Lots of leftover lamb... what do I make?

Though I've given up red meat, I do remember Alton Brown doing a really nice historical show on the origins of shepherd's pie on the Food network years ago...and my Scottish roots just swooned all over it...might still be on youtube but it was great stuff.

super budget meals

Alice, do you have a sunny windowsill there? You could probably grow some lovely green herbs like parsley if so.

super budget meals

yep...I can buy a 1 pound bag of dried black beans at the Dollar store for $1...rice is 88 cents per 1 pound bag (so let's say you cook up 1/4 of those bags)...steam up some carrots and IF the OP is talking about a SINGLE meal with modest portion sizes, I am quite sure mine would come in at about $1.
