super budget meals

Alice, do you have a sunny windowsill there? You could probably grow some lovely green herbs like parsley if so.

super budget meals

yep...I can buy a 1 pound bag of dried black beans at the Dollar store for $1...rice is 88 cents per 1 pound bag (so let's say you cook up 1/4 of those bags)...steam up some carrots and IF the OP is talking about a SINGLE meal with modest portion sizes, I am quite sure mine would come in at about $1.

What would you consider are your 6 essential spices?

Ground cinnamon is so easy to add to my blended up dark berries for breakfast 4-5 times each week...and also to my oats on the "other" breakfast days. Also lovely on a baked sweet potato!

Packaged Mixes, Sauces, Spices & Boxed Items You Use

Trader Joe's Marsala simmering sauce...oh! my! so delish! I try to make all of my sauces from scratch (Pomi tomatoes help here for the base) but I wish I knew how to replicate this sauce...it ...is...delish! I love it with basmati rice and cilantro...and I don't eat chicken anymore but when my son comes over, I make it for him with chicken thighs. I always add my own chopped onion & garlic & mushrooms to it too.

What would you consider are your 6 essential spices?

Ground cloves and ground cinnamon definitely #1 & #2 for their awesome antioxidant qualities...turmeric #3, dried leaf oregano #4, cumin & chili powder 5 & 6 for sure!

Best rosemary to grow for culinary use?

I adore rosemary and have grown many "bushes" of it myself here in FL--one friend actually said hers was the size of a shrub!...was not aware of different varieties but am following this for new information! Thanks!

No evidence saturated fats promote heart disease, no evidence unsaturated fats reduce it

Plants SAVE us...meat does not save us...here's the evidence for MANY diseases: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JNNL... plants provide healing substances to our bodies.

Chicken cacciatore in pressure cooker

hmmm...maybe this one? Have made it for my son when he stops in...have done it with lamb shanks AND short ribs...the sauce is delish, especially over couscous...I may have used chicken thighs too--got some nice reviews too:

Here are more specific reasons about why this study is flawed: http://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2014o...

The study is flawed. Ludicrous, to me, that people believe it.
We know for a fact that saturated fats CLOG arteries...transfats too. People seem to want to believe good news about bad habits and as a result, Americans are dying of heart disease, the #1 killer of men and women. http://fanaticcook.com/2014/03/22/tha... just saying.

Trader Joe's YAY/NAY - March 2014 [OLD]

ohmyyum...well, I was probably just saying for ME, it's better for me to eat them whole...truly, I could make a meal out of almond butter...it's too easy for me to overdo it, it tastes so good. thanks...yes, those ingredients are clean, for sure!

Trader Joe's YAY/NAY - March 2014 [OLD]

the last jar I got was SO Runny especially compared to my favorite, Smucker's Natural Creamy PB...the flavor of the TJ's was nice but the runniness killed it for me...just saying, even my grown son said "does this seem watery to you?...TJ's unsweetened Almond Butter, though...now THAT is some $$$ ...so much so I don't trust myself to keep it in the house...healthier to eat the almonds whole anyway...but oh, their almond butter is da bomb!

Is Indian Food really healthy?

yep, and I would add GINGER to being a very very beneficial plant for all of us... turmeric is turning out to be QUITE the anti-inflammatory spice/root! I've been enjoying it fresh lately...grated up and chucked into dark leafy green salad, though the powder form is also very beneficial...don't forget to include BLACK PEPPER with it to increase the uptake of the beneficial properties!

Roasted vegatables

Hi, ChiliDude...plants HAVE protein...just *gently* saying...and protein is overvalued and overconsumed today in the good old U.S.A. :-)

Trader Joe's YAY/NAY - March 2014 [OLD]

I also like their green tea, especially their ORGANIC green tea...20 bags for $2.69, that is really awesome...and if you drink it every day, makes sense to go organic <my reasoning anyway>. yay...though I've noticed they have been running out of the organic green tea quite often but then again, everyone who can possibly manage to come to Florida is doing so since the winter has been so harsh up North.

Trader Joe's Yay/Nay Thread - December 2013 [old]

yes, the tri-colored frozen pepper strips are nice and convenient...just finished up a package...but their fresh organic peppers are lovely too...and red bell pepper are on the dirty list for pesticides (just gently saying)...so they might be a better choice? In either case, yay for this item!

Avocado ideas

Cut in half, remove pit and put in a scoop of fresh salsa or any salsa that you like...REALLY delish...just eat it out of the skin with spoon...one of my favorites! Also, half an avocado makes a lovely salad dressing ... put into a bowl and mix in some balsamic vinegar (red or white) and blend with fork and pour over dark leafy greens...no oils are even needed here since the avocado has beneficial fats for us!

Your Top 5 Trader Joe's Products? - 2014

Yep, love the organic virgin coconut oil to WEAR (great moisturizer with no chemicals after shower), not to eat
Organic Green Tea when I can find it...seems like it is less and less available now ... bummer
Organic Hummus
Frozen Organic Chopped Spinach.(used to be able to find the organic frozen chopped spinach but for past months only the pestide-free kind...I'll take it but long for the organic)
Frozen Organic Strawberries...criminey! Whole Foods sells fresh organic straws for $6.99 a pound...get outta here! TJ's is a deal...WF does have frozen organic but pkg is 10 ounces, not 12 like TJ's...just saying!!!!

Heart healthy brunch ideas?

The doctor who helped Bill Clinton reverse his heart disease is Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr.--no more bypasses for him! So, my gentle suggestion would be NO eggs, no meat, no dairy...and this recipe from fatfreevegan has had some nice comments when I made it for work--there is also a sweet potato lasagna recipe at the Engine 2 Diet website that has received tons of kudos on their FB page. Hope this helps and hope your boyfriend's dad improves--heart disease is preventable and reversable in 90% of the cases, such shame so many Americans are dying of it. http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2011/06/...

Best 'sleeper' vegies I'm missing out on?

yep, lovelovelove eggplant and guess what? you don't HAVE to fry it in oil to cook it...just lightly coat with some olive oil and BAKE it (I always add garlic and NEVER remove the skin...so much fiber and nutrients in that purple skin!)...OR you could just roast entire eggplant in the oven I've seen that done too!
