Best Recipes you have ever found on Chowhound Home Cooking board

Yeah, there ARE so many great recipes shared so graciously on these boards...I agree with GHG's black bean dip...awesome...and Robert Lauriston's Cilantro Rice is da bomb around my house...and this one for Ma Po Tofu from Mabziegurl a long time ago when there was another great thread "Your Most Requested Dish Recipe"

awww...thank you Valerie (^_^)...just made it for an office pot luck and it was gone in 30 mins!

What did you have for lunch today?

pfft...! I eat sardines about 3 times a week...pretty plain like you, usually with Ryvita crackers and a green salad.

What did you have for lunch today?

@Sun: I bought it prepared from local independent health food store so it may have been a non-mayo mayonnaise but it definitely was mayo-like...not very much of it though.

ETA: please check out a recipe at lowfatveganchef if you want...I saw a photo looked very much like what I ate (cabbage & tomatoes)...I did a search of Costa Rican coleslaw and that came up as a possibility. I am at work now so can't spend lots of time looking for the exact recipe but will check that out when I get home, I want to make it over the weekend.

What did you have for lunch today?

one and 1/2 deviled eggs, one slice of whole wheat bread...and Costa Rican style coleslaw...weird but oh...how I loved that coleslaw (which had chopped up tomatoes..cilantro and some cayenne pepper in it)...I was very happy!

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd quarter 2012

Wow, never thought of putting herbs/spices on my popcorn...might check that out sometime to put celery salt on it next time!

Vegan foods at Trader Joe's - What's good?

Yes, I realize the broccoli is not on the dirty list, but I choose organic because I eat a LOT of it...anything I eat a LOT of, I try to keep it organic. But I appreciate what noya was saying...all the same...

dried seafood

yes, arktos! dried anchovies and kelp too give a lovely flavor to Korean broths, I've found.

NYT article on going vegan

I've considered vegan in many ways...but I love my fish...sardines, salmon etc. And I believe the Omega 3's from these foods are essential for ME...! I've come to the conclusion that humans are omnivores but plant-BASED, not plant-ONLY is very very important and give us the most nutrients. Thanks pika!

Vegan foods at Trader Joe's - What's good?

And TJ's single avocados are $1.29 for a huge Haas...they are really great! Just saying...Publix' organic carrots are the SAME as TJ's but TJ's cost 30 cents less per pound...and yes, price matters to me, quality too. I know some people who've bought huge carrots at the Farmer's Market here and they say these carrots are too tough and fiber-y to be juiced...the TJ's carrots are juicy and delish, in my opinion.

Breast cancer diet recommendations?

((((maxie)))) you are a wonderful sister ...and I hope that your sister beats this right out of her! Cancer runs in my family, my brother died of colon cancer 2 years ago, which is what our dad died of too. I'm going to offer you this video of how to slow cancer...this website by Dr. Micheael Greger offers a lot of research and data ... the substance sulforaphane in broccoli seems significant also in fighting particularly breast cancer (discussed in a different video) See what you think and I hope this can be of some small guidance or help...I agree with others who've said get the growth hormones OUT OUT OUT of her and OUR diets...

Vegan foods at Trader Joe's - What's good?

"avoid the fresh produce"...um, what? Their organic carrots are 89 cents a pound! That's pretty awesome and they are good carrots! Also, their organic broccoli is $2.69 per bunch...cannot TOUCH that anywhere else...Whole Foods wants $4.50 for organic broccoli here in SWFL! Just gently saying....

creamy-style vegan salad dressing suggestions?

I just use a fork to mash up the *ripe* avocado...you could use a food processor but it seems unnecessary...the mashed avocado breaks down nicely with any acid, I've noticed.

creamy-style vegan salad dressing suggestions?

Avocados make beautiful dressings...very creamy and silky due to the healthy fats. Haven't tried it with lemon but usually balsamic vinegar works nicely.

Something like this: http://localfoods.about.com/od/saladdressings/qt/avocadodressing.htm

How Do You Make Popcorn?

I agree with melpy...place 2 or 3 TBSP yellow popping corn into paper lunch bag...fold top closed leaving room for popped corn...microwave til almost all done popping...carefully empty into bowl and put desired toppings on. I keep using the same bag, too. I have never had any popcorn pop out of the bag; this is the easiest way to have popcorn, it seems to me.

Recommendations for cooking lean salmon

I'm in total agreement here ...wild salmon can be undercooked and still safe to eat.

What did you have for breakfast today?

Dark berry concoction of organic wild blueberries, raw cranberries and organic strawberries mixed with some Chobani plain yogurt and ground flaxseed, palmful of walnuts and cup of coffee. Noticed folks eating avocado at breakfast...that's one in my weekly rotation usually a half with a spoonful of salsa where the pit was and just eat it with a spoon out of the skin.

How to eat fewer refined carbs???

As in french fries, perhaps? Just wondering...a baked potato or half of a baked potato WITH skin I thought was not so bad on the glycemic numbers...just saying...can you elaborate, Q?

POLL: Can you walk to an actual grocery store?

yep, when I visited my son in San Fran when he lived there, I was in heaven...little corner Asian markets...Trader Joe's...etc. etc. all within walking distance of any BART stop...totally magical! ♥ must.win.lotto.soon!! I would move to SF in a heartbeat!

Good eats in Naples/Estero/Bonita Springs?

There's a pretty new place on Fifth Avenue South called Alberto's...a few of my co-workers have eaten there and have already gone back again, they liked it very much...so far only open for dinner and here's the review from today's paper just in case you are interested--

http://www.gonaples.com/news/2012/apr/13/a-love-for-food-attention-to-detail-impress-at/

Also, Inca's Peruvian is still rockin' it, so I hear...they are not on Fifth Ave...but still in Naples...see insatiable appetite's review.

IM Tapas is lovely, not very far from Fifth...see insatiable appetite's review.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd quarter 2012

Well....not everyone would agree with your statement about it being okay except for environmental issues...my internist nixes the palm oil and he specializes in lipids...and these folks also nix the palm oil in this "oil comparison chart" for what it's worth...GHG, you know I love ya but palm oil is kind of way down there, health-wise, from what I've seen, just gently saying--hope this link works:

what do you buy at Whole Foods?

I'm not in Vancouver but I also like many of the 365 house brand items...their solid white tuna is excellent, along with their red sockeye salmon, and frozen wild organic blueberries. From the bulk bins I get the organic yellow popping corn, oats and golden flaxseed (and grind them up myself for a week's worth of ground flax). Not sure if they sell their fresh crabcakes up there in Vancouver but back at the seafood counter, WHEN THEY ARE ON SALE, I do buy them--just about 100% crab meat, 4 ounces of heaven!

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd quarter 2012

(((((GHG)))))) thank you so much!

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd quarter 2012

what are the ingredients, matt? I can't do palm oil...

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd quarter 2012

Their 2-pack frozen beef tamales are really delicious..shredded beef, not ground...we like them better than the chicken/cheese tamales, just saying, but both are quite good!

Do you recall your first Chowhound post?

Ha, fun post, alkapal! Pretty sure mine was the introduction of Bonnie's Buffalo Chicken Dip in '04?? may have been '03.....boy, did I "hang back" before ever posting ANYthing on CH...LOL! Oh, fine, now I need to go back and see if I can actually find my first post. (^_^)

Easy and elegant fish recipe?

YEAH on that Pan Seared Tuna with Ginger Shiitake cream sauce...hooo-ee! That is a MAGICAL dish--restaraunt quality for little effort, though ingredients can be expensive. Absolutely stellar...good call ctfoodie!

Super-Frugal Meals -- around $1 per serving -- Beyond Rice and Beans

Divadmas, I was a little skeptical about what you said until last week when I saw that the price for a pound of dried green split peas jumped from 68 cents per pound to 88 cents per pound (Walmart). Still a good deal though for a pound of protein, fiber and other nutrients, though!
