What restaurant do you really really really miss that is now closed ?????

Anyone remember the name of the Italian deli where Il Grano is now? Across from Dolores' on Santa Monica. The tiramisu was the best I have ever had in my life. The bakery chef was from Peru, and he worked in the kitchen at the Italian consulate there, where he learned to make Italian desserts.

San Fernando Valley-weekend breakfast

Sweet Butter, their scrambled eggs w/ white beans & roasted tomato on toast and arugula salad has been what I've been craving lately.

Absolutely, La Toque. Still go to the one in Napa, but the one on Sunset was great. Ken Frank would turn up the Clapton while cooking the themed late night dinners.

Fried Chicken at Mom's Bar-B-Q House (Van Nuys)

Agreed. Mom's chicken is good, very moist. Parking is problematic. And I love Roger's rib tips.

EAGLE ROCK, CA

I like CaCao but I find sometimes the chef a little heavy handed with the salt shaker. But I die for their stuffed squash blossoms.

The fideo I have found is rather thick, so have been using De Cecco angel hair nest instead

Your best meal of 2013?

I had a wonderful meal at FM 1884 in Mendoza a couple of years back, the parilla and pastas were great, the wines great, and highly recommend going if you have the opportunity.

Hi Spiritchaser, willing to go downtown as long as easily navigated by sub or taxi. We won't have time to venture into Brooklyn this time.

My BFF & I will be in your great city in January, for birthday concert & show, staying Midtown West. Need suggestions for casual but tasty restaurants (no reservations), we like small, funky places for lunch & dinner. Going to Norma's, Balthazar, Clinton St. Baking, Katsu Hama. Gastropubs and breakfast places open late are good, no Thai or Korean but looking for great xlb. Have already been to Katz's, Bubbys, Joe's, John's, Lombardi's, Toloache, Shake Shack, Sarabeths. Not familiar with Hells Kitchen area but heard they have some cool places. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, tia!

Best Tamales Downtown to West L.A.

Glad to report that Rosy's in Pacoima still open, $1.50 per tamale. Knowing I'm not a fan of green chile w/ cheese, she had me try her version - was tasty. Sells out of pork early.

Are you talking about Rosy's in Pacoima? True, near Hansen Dam, but thought they went out of business.

Yup, don't like 'em, too much masa and not enough filling. What the heck is a tamale bowl? Shouldn't have to have cover with sauce if they are moist. Can't say anything about their rellenos, as I didn't see stems, so wasn't sure if fresh vs canned & didn't order.

Hmm...I don't care for Mama's Tamales nor the Gourmet Tamale Factory. If you're out in that part of the Valley golfing on a Sunday, why don't you stop at Rocio's for their brunch. They added tamales to their brunch selections. Otherwise, it's Lilianas or Tamales Indiana in ELA for the real deal.

Bit o Scotland fish and chips

I have to disagree...I had a craving for f&c, was lazy and went to Northridge - hadnt been in quite some time - it wasn't good. I'm not liking the Encino O'Groats much period either. I like Robin Hood or Buchanan Arms.

SF 'hounds need lunch help near North Hills

Chef Edwing worked in DC, but moved out here to open a small place. Food's good, prices are reasonable. I've even had him cater a few family parties. Definitely worth checking out.
