I will follow up with any places that I come across anywhere on our trip.

Interesting eats in Ponsonby, Taupo, Rotorua, Napier area?

Thanks for the mention of the Thursday night market. We will actually be in Rotorua on a Thursday. I know that this is Chowhound but if you have any suggestions or advice I would love to hear it - about any part of your trip.

I was thinking that curioussheridan had some places in Rotorua and Taupo. We are arriving in two weeks and there for 3 weeks both islands. I made a reservation at Rata already! We are not stopping in Auckland but for one night and then heading up to Bay of Islands for two days. And then back down.

I have been reading lots of boards and posts here and elsewhere to get ideas on eating. we want good - decor irrelevant.

Hong Kong Multiple locales

Hello again - I have more questions!! So I have narrowed dining choices to dinners at Sichuan House and Above and Beyond and dim sum at Tim Ho Wan. I plan a trip to Chi Lin and Nan Lian gardens and will spend that day on Kowloon.

I have also added Mak's for one of the non wedding lunches.

I am also stopping in a couple of tea rooms as I am addicted
to tea - and consider myself a tea aficionado. If you have any suggestions please tell me.

Can you recommend some pastry shops? I have looked at many places but once again turn to your guidance.

Thank you!

I can't believe that I will be in Hong Kong in 4 days and I also can't believe I will be there such a short time.

Hong Kong Multiple locales

I can agree on that! Usually one or two or 5 places rise up to the top as good always. But I do realize that Hong Kong has an amazing amount of food options and choices.

Hong Kong Multiple locales

Thank you very much! I do understand the difficulty. I will do my best to commit to eating my way through hong kong.

Hong Kong Multiple locales

So i think the reason I am unsure about what to choose for sichuan or dim sum is that no one seems to agree on a restaurant. The Jumbo conversation is a good example. As I only have a few meals in Hong Kong I dont want to waste them on food that may be mediocre or over priced. I want to come home being in food heaven.
Isn't there one or two restaurants that stand out for authentic food in HK? And I don't necessarily mean the Four Seasons.

Hong Kong Multiple locales

Hello again! I read lots of wonderful posts today, which left me drooling but confused and am still in need of help in narrowing down for the Central area for dim sum and cantonese /sichuan recs. Should I jump across to Kowloon? or go to Causeway Bay? Or can I get my food needs met in Central?
And is there any place recommended on Lantau? Should I eat at Po Lin monastery? I wish I had more time in HK but will have to come back and spend more time exploring.
Thank you in advance!

Hong Kong Multiple locales

Hi Miss Veg - thank you for the rec of Fu Sing! I have read the posts but I miss the interaction of people in my planning of my trips.

Hong Kong Multiple locales

Thank you for your response. Awesome! My response would be yes to every question. Dim sum, whole in the wall, cantonese, sichuan. I just want to be able to communicate. And experience food. And culture of Hong kong.

Hong Kong Multiple locales

Thank you for your advice. What are your five hong kong favorites? I am definitely looking for Chinese or fusion it spectacular seafood.

Hong Kong Multiple locales

Hello Dear CH ers,
I will be in Hong Kong for 6 days for a wedding. 2 nights in Central, two nights near Repulse Bay and two nights near the airport. I have a knowledgeable friend passing through for one of those days and we will do a few things together. He said dim sum at city hall and a proper English tea as well as street grazing on our way to tour.
I need to come up with dinner the night I arrive - I get in to the airport at 6:45 pm so something delicious but close to Ovolo Hotel on arbuthnot rd. I will want to stay up for a few hours and wander around. I plan to visit Victoria Peak the next day and have nothing else planned yet - continental breakfast is included with hotel. So I need lunch and dinner advice.

And I like to eat - good food - decor not important, the ability to communicate in a small way is important. I will have 1 breakfast and 2 lunch possibilities near Repulse Bay (stanley market/aberdeen)and the rest of the meals are wedding related.

The last day I will visit the Big Buddha and I will need a lunch and dinner suggestion over there.

I would appreciate any suggestions or advise on any part of the trip. Price is not an object but the food must be beyond the cost of the meal in amazingness. Are there any boat trip dinners?

What would you say is not to miss? Thank you for any advice!

New Zealand Places - Any suggestions?

Hello Dear chowhounders again -
We have narrowed down our stops along the way on our adventure in New Zealand. We are looking for any recommendations for Paihia area, Wellington - we have the beer crawl - Marlborough area, Wellington, Wanaka, Christchurch - food or otherwise. We will get into Auckland around 7 pm on a Monday and would love something easy and delicious and fish based.

Many thanks!

New Zealand - North and South Islands in December

Hello Dear Chowhounds -
We are making a trip - first time and very excited to New Zealand beginning of December for 15 days. We will start at the North end of the North Island and finish at the South end of the South Island. We want to eat and/or drink our way on the trip. Please help me with any and all suggestions or recommendations. We will definitely plan our trip around food (and the magnificent sights). We are interested in anything, more local than imported, home stays or roadside stops, fresh is best, delish is key. Off the beaten path is good too. If you have a favorite let us know. Hubby is a beer king.

We had an amazing trip in Hawaii thanks to someone who helped us eat our way through the trip.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Palm Springs area? Any new suggestions?

Rick's is definitely a greasy spoon joint but the food is fresh and service efficient.

Cheeky's is overrated. We are always amazed at the line and the food Meh and inconsistent as well as the service. A bit of resting on their laurels and the love of Yelp!

I would send you to Cafe Europa down the street next to Koffi. They have a nice back patio with great view of the mountain and the shops around. The coffee is delicious - french press both decaf and regular and we find the food is good and consistent.

A new place that opened recently called Appetito next to the other Koffi (south Palm Canyon) is fun and worth trying.

If you haven't already, pop into Tropicale for happy hour 4 pm everyday and have a coconut martini (or two) and a couple of apps or dinner at 5. Brunch is also fun to be at. Fun to people watch as well.

And one of my all time favorites is Casa De Frida - it is not mexican food, but latin food. The Posole is amazing and it is definitely a bump up in taste. Just don't go expecting cal-mex or tex-mex.

Check out Farm for crepes etc and dinner a few nights a week. Yummy Yummy Yummy!

And if you want to try something different and unique
try Dish - they call it creative cuisine.

Just my take on the food here.
The drinks are really the thing tho!

nsxtasy - You really are the rock star on this Board! My husband lives here for an assignment and I travel back and forth so I am guessing that we will try both steak houses! I do want to get a dressed up not crazy dressy but anniversary special dressy.

One Day in New Orleans

Yummy! Thanks for your input and advice! Let me throw out another question?? Who makes the best darn shrimp or oyster po boy in the quarter? And does anyone make a grilled shrimp po boy? I know sacrilege but I got to ask!

I am not sure that we want to eat a large meal but rather eat over the course of the 12 hours

And oysters are out of season - anyplace farm raising them in cool conditions?

One Day in New Orleans

Hi Everybody - Going to be in New Orleans for one day noon to midnight and we want to eat/drink our way through the quarter. Can you tell me where the best gumbo can be had? Best shrimp po boy? Best music? Best desert? We don't want to go to just one place but kind of eat and walk, drink and walk.

I appreciate any advice, knowing that these questions have been answered. I have read through the posts but I cannot distill it down enough.
Thank you for your help!

Palm Springs restaurants

Depends upon what you are looking for. Zin's is our favorite place - its located in downtown - Trio in uptown. We ate at Johannes the food was good but rich. We are not fans of Lulu's but everyone we know likes it there. Sammy G's surprised us with its consistency. Good sandwiches and salads. Escena has amazing views mediocre service and food. But have drinks first and you won't notice the food. But the view is fantastic. Tyler's has excellent burgers - its in the downtown area. Cheeky's is overrated but if you want to eat there and don't want to wait go at 8 am. Jiao's is hit or miss as well - the chef was amazing when they opened but the chef after the summer closing was not. We will try them again before writing them off. The quality of food in the desert is interesting. These are just our opinions. There are many places we have not tried yet. But living here allows us the time to try them. Let us know where you ate and what you thought - we are always up for new information!

Two days in Hartford with a quick trip to the coast for the day-Deliciousness wanted!

Hi Everyone -
I will be in Hartford for two days. Am staying in West Hartford both nights and want to shoot down to the Old Saybrook, Lyme area for lunch. Am looking for delicious fresh seafood, lobster, clams etc. Deliciousness is much more important than decor. Also any recs for West Hartford for outstanding food? Many thanks in advance for the great suggestions
