Mexican Homemade Mecca (Charlotte)

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/689338

This is an earlier thread of Lupita's. I agree it's well worth the trip. My husband works uptown and once a month at least I'm begged to drive up there and bring back lunch for his co-workers. I also pick it up when it's my turn to host my book club etc. Goes down well and makes my life very easy!

They now have 3 salsa's - the regular red and green, and a chipotle. I favor the green, my husband the red. They used to give me pieces of lime when I was buying everything but that hasn't happened lately.

The tortillas are fantastic. I love to watch them come steaming off the press. I also pick up chorizo and cheese while I'm there

Looking for beignets in Charlotte

I've had them for brunch at George's Brasserie in Southpark.

Charlotte - where to buy wine?

Thanks all! I ended up back at Reid's, after going to Total Wine. Bought several bottles at each place (who can stop at 1?).

BTW - Reid's are willing to discount a lot of their wines right now to move stock. The bottle I'm going to use for this friendly competition was $40, just outside my preset budget of $25-35. They marked it down for me!

I also went to Pasta & Provisions - interesting selection of Italian Reds and great bread. So I've found at least one new place to add to my list. I'll try to make it to Vintner's on a future trip.

Charlotte - where to buy wine?

Forgot about Reid's.

Waitress, do you have a favorite from Ridge Vineyards? Total Wine off Park Rd. has 5 different bottles which fit the price restriction I'm on (it's for a friendly competition).

I picked up a bottle of Layer Cake Primitivo at Vino 100 (wine store inside B of A building) for my cheaper entry.

Charlotte - where to buy wine?

I haven't checked either of those yet. It's just that Charlotte is such a driving town that I never stumble across stuff and I was wondering if there were cool places I was missing.

I hadn't thought about Brawley's for wine - I love it for beer. Also a fan of Common Market on S. Tryon (I like that I can walk there). And Target is good for M-F stuff.

Looks like Vintner's Market is approx 10 miles from me - is it worth the trip? I rarely have reason to go down that way.

Charlotte - where to buy wine?

Any favorite wine stores?

I've been to Total Wine, Dean & Deluca, WineStore (at Morrison) and a couple of others whose names I don't recall (next to Fiamma restaruant on Park Road and inside one of the BofA buildings on Tryon). I'm specifically looking for a Zinfandel in the $25-35 range for a wine tasting. Closer to Uptown is better.

I think I've seen it at the The South African Food Shop on Independence. That's where I usually get my sauces/condiments.

I still have one Knorr and two Colman's packets left from my last trip to NY if you're stuck.

Help! I burnt tomato sauce in my le creuset pot!

I did the same thing last week. Do you have any Oxyclean? Or other powdered detergent? I used about half a cup, and a couple of cups of water. Let it soak overnight. It dislodged the burnt bits and most of it lifted easily when sprayed with hot water. Minimal scrubbing was required to remove the remainder.

UES brunch/lunch, kid friendly

When the god-kids are visiting (ages 2 and 3 months), we tend to go to Eli's Vinegar Factory (91st between 1st and York) or more recently, Big Daddy's diner (2nd Avenue at 83rd Street). I was at Sarabeth's yesterday and there was no wait at 9 am, but by 9.10 there were about 4 groups waiting. When we left at 10 am the wait seemed to be 30+ minutes.

Le Pain Quotidien - Anything good (besides pastries)?

I like the sugar waffle. It used to automatically come with a tiny jug of hot chocolate sauce to pour over, though now you have to ask for that.

Slow Cooker Cook Book

Some time ago I made a venison stew from "Slow Cooker Cooking" by Lora Brody. As I recall, the recipe included baby portobello mushrooms and red currant jelly. It was my first time cooking venison so I followed the recipe exactly without any changes or substitutions. BF took it to work and shared with co-workers who all enjoyed it. (One, the hunter who donated the meat reportedly said it was the best way he'd had venison, and was even better than his mother's - that may have been faint praise).

I also made a slow cooker carrot soup from that book, but while it was good, I don't think it needed to be done in a slow cooker. Top of stove would have been just as good.

I don't have a copy of the recipe to hand, but the book should be available in your local library.

Blood sausage in NYC?

I've gotten it at Schaller & Weber on 3rd, between 85th and 86th.

Near St. Vincent's Hospital, West 12th? Breakfast/lunch/dinner.

Near St. Vincent's Hospital, West 12th? Breakfast/lunch/dinner.

I'm trying to find restaurants close to St. Vincent's hospital. A friend has a seriously ill family member in intensive care, and can't go too far from the hospital. So far they've been eating take-out from a nearby Chinese, but it's been over a week and that's getting tired. I don't know the area, and can't even figure out if I should be searching for suggestions in the West Village or Chelsea. I mostly need take-out suggestions, though they also need quick, inexpensive places to go to for short “time outs”. Searching old threads got me the following suggestions:

Two Boots
A Salt & Battery
Artepaste
Bar Six
Benny's Burritos
Bone Lick Park
Cafe Asean
Cafe De Bruxxelles
Cafe Loup
Chelsea Market
Corner Bistro
Elephant And Castle
Israeli Place On Waverly just west of 7th Avenue (past 11th Street?)

Salem
Sapore/Sappore
Taqueria De Mexico
Tartine
Tea & Sympathy

What to do with Apple Cider?

I visited an orchard this weekend (Ritters, N.E. Pennsylvania) and came away with a gallon of Apple Cider. It says "unpasteurised" on the container. Now, what do I do with it?

At the orchard I had a cup of the cider heated (I don’t think any spices were added), and we also had apple cider donuts. Is that it for using this? I’m not even sure how long this is good for, if kept refrigerated.

The cider I grew up with was alcoholic (like Magners), a completely different animal.

suggestions for lunch today in Woodside or Elmhurst

Sapori d'Ischia, 55-15 37th Ave., between 55th and 56th Sts.
No problem parking there.

Ice Cream + Flake in Woodside?

Was this for a prepared ice-cream? Growing up in Ireland we used to get a "99" from the ice-cream van. A whipped vanilla ice-cream cone with a Cadbury Flake stuck in. Delicious. Everyone had their own way of eating it - Wonder if they've made it into something you can buy from a freezer.
