late night cheap eats
El Rey Del Taco will be open if you're up for authentic tacos on homemade tortillas (have to specify)
or Bo Bo Garden, in the shopping Center across the street - for excellent Cantonese
Where do you buy your coffee beans in Atlanta?
I typically get my beans at Dancing Goats in Decatur.
Recommendations - Houston
I'm in Houston this week and would love to solict recommendations for the best locally owned and operated dining establishments. My accomodations are in NW Houston FM1960 / 249 - however for the real deal I am mroe than ready to do some driving.
I love all types of food - from hamburgers to sushi - so let me know the "must try" places.
Thanks,
Franklin
Mee Grob in Atlanta?
there are several in town you may want to try -
Little Bangkok - on Chesire Bridge
Penang - Buhi
TC #5 The Beatdown
Definitely Truffles - Truffle oil - or Roasted Baby Root Veggies! They totally missed the concept of representing Earth - the Squash Soup did sound too simple - but would have better aligned with the theme.
I think Johnny Depp wannabe, err, I mean Spike's days are numbered as it is - he's pretty consistently near the bottom and his attitude and ultra coolness are wearing thin.
Brick Store - Decatur, GA
Brickstore is great - I highly recommend - plus the food is on the high end of pub grub
Alternative to Greenwood's for Thanksgiving pies
Ahhh - thanks for the additional detail. I've eaten at his previous "Portabella's Pantry" (which is where Nantucket Sandwich Shop is - near Smokejack) as well as at "Portabellas" - the later incarnation prior to it's demize. The food was always on par, but there seemed to be a lack of focus in the front of the house. Regardless, I'm happy he's back - I certainly hope he's still making a version of the roasted pork in poblano cream sauce....man I've missed it!
Alternative to Greenwood's for Thanksgiving pies
Interesting - is Roswell Mill making another go of it? May I ask, is Wildflour a bakery or a full scale restaurant?

I will DEFINITELY go to El Tiempo again...looking forward to the quail
Strange Pairings that Taste Uncommonly Good
sausage biscuit with jelly and/or yellow mustard...very tasty
also - watermelon with fresh cracked pepper and balsamic - it literally tastes like strawberry shortcake.
Atlanta GA near Hyatt Regency

Final update - Thursday a group of us wen to Saltgrass - It's not my first choice - but went along with the group - we split the snake bites (shrimp and cream cheese in deep fried jalapenos) - and some fried mushrooms - the snkae bites were pretty good - but the mushrooms had a bland coating and didnt do much for me. I also had the steak and shrimp combo with coconut shrimp - the steak with peppercorn cognac - nether were outstanding - but completely edible
Thursday evening, however, I went to what is now my favorite Mexican restuarant in Houston - El Tiempo ( was at the Washington location) and had some of the best beef fajitas I've ever had. Incredibly fresh and flavorful steak coupled with the freshest of ingredients...yummmm Also note - the Margarita's here are potent!!!
Thanks Houston for another great dining extravaganza! I'm looking forward to my next visit.
Atlanta - Best Burgers
OMG! That MUST be the famous ghetto burger!!!! I think I'll endure the line next time I try to eat there. Also - not sure if it was an ugly rumour - but I had heard Ann's was closing - say it isn't true! I hope it doesn't follow suit with the Silver Grill and shut down.

Update - Arrived in Houston in time for a late dinner this evening. So I took the recommendation from Karenkay and tried Hong Long. The restuarant was clean and sparsely populated with a predominant Asian crowd. I had the Lotus delight salad - great recommendation! It was a nice mix of red onion, cucumber, daicon, green onion - combined with shrimp, jellyfish, cilantro with a sweet sauce - very tasty!
I also tried the treasure fish - which was also very good - the fish was crispy and hot - topped with straw mushrooms, baby shrimp in a brown sauce - yummy!
The waiter also told me to try the beef salad - I'll have to try it on my next visit!

Okay - I flew into Houston yesterday, on my way to Austin - it was around lunchtime - and I had fish tacos on my mind...So I headed over to FM 1960 to Berryhill's Tamales and Tacos. (Monday - fish tacos $1.99!!!) I saw on the menu board a sign indicating Zagat readers have rated Berryhill's fish taco's as the best...bar none...so far - I have to agree. The fish fillets are perfectly fried and are not the least bit greasy. They are topped with red cabbage, cilantro and a wonderful, slightly sweet tartar sauce. I also had an order of tamales - one beef, one pork and one corn/spinach - all very tasty as well.
I'll be back in Houston later this week and look forward to trying some new places.
Wing Ways In Norcross, GA
I haven't been to wing ways in eons but do remember the outstanding sauce on the wings...it has the tang of a BBQ sauce - but the kick of a buffalo style sauce...very tasty and unique.

Thanks for the tips - I'll gladly post my findings and share my thoughts on what I have. To more clearly state - I'll be up 249 near Willowbrook Mall area. I've eaten at plenty of places in this area - but am always looking for new places to dine...specifically if I can find locally owned and operated establishments (harder to find in the burbs).

Hello Houston Foodies,
I'll be in NW Houston for 3 days next week and I am always looking for recommendations for quality dining establishments. Not looking to break the bank, but am open to all suggestions. I typically try to gravitate to locally owned and operated establishments verses national chains.
I've tried several offerings in the area, as well as closer to the city - but like to hear what you guys have to say.
Many thanks!
Atlanta - Best Burgers
Yes, it's been a while since having a burger at George's, but it is a very good "bar burger"
Atlanta - Best Burgers
5 Guys is a welcome addition in Atlanta. This DC based chain has a basic, stripped down approach of using fresh ingredients and sticking to a short menu of items they prepare well...very reminiscent of In n Out Burger on the west coast.
Where to stop on road trip? GA to LA
Bates House of Turkey in Greenville, Ala. is worthy of a pitstop. A wide range of choices surrounding, of all things, turkey! BTW, the Turkey Salad is very good.
Atlanta - Best Burgers
I understand the menu changes based on seasonal and fresh ingredient availability...but are there are standout items you would recommend? Chef Tuohy has a great reputation in the realm of organics and bringing out the natural flavors of his ingredients...but thanks for the tip on the burger - I'm sure I'll look to other menu items at Woodfire.
FIELD OF GREENS - Oct 6th - Covington, GA
I ran across an ad for this event and it sounded interesting. If anyone attended last year, or have more information about the event, please let me know...thanks

Atlanta - Best Burgers
Most of the responses have yeilded a nice listing of gourmet burgers - (Joel, Bacchanalia, One Midtown, etc.)..Woodfire sounds hit or miss - have never eaten there - but hear it's incredible...Chef Tuohy has a great reputation of an organic purist...However, WHEN I finally do dine at Woodfire, I doubt I'll order the burger - but suppose it's still a viable option.
Short trip to Atlanta area
Little Szuchuan has been my mainstay for Szechuan for a number of years - love those string beans with shreaded pork...yummmmm - I tried Tasty China a couple of weeks ago and can tell you it's the real deal. I can't wait to go back soon to work my way down the menu...loved the hot and numbing beef rolls
Need Delicious Atlanta Suggestions @ Perimeter Mall
Chequer's is good for fresh seafood and those tasty cheese biscuits - mmmm- Dunwoody Co'm at Dunwoody Village for delicious grilled meats and seafood with rice, or noodles - excellent kobe carpaccio too - Others have mentioned other favs nearby - E 48th, Rumi's Kitchen, Cafe Sunflower...Haven't tried Seasons 52 yet - but hear it's quite tasty for spa cuisine - Then you have the sea of chains - Woodfire, PF Changs, Flemmings, Brio, CPK, McCormick's, etc, - all with their formulaic glory...LOL
Atlanta - Best Burgers
Where can I find the best hamburgers in Atlanta?
Here is my list - so far:
- The Vortex - P'tree and 8th or Little 5 - wide range of choices here - and tasty tater tots to boot!
- Rheas - several locations around the Roswell / Alpharetta area - try the Rhea's special - fresh beef patty on grilled texas toast
- Downwind's Restaurant - at PDK - tasty burgers - partially precooked to handle the demand - but still very good
- Ann's Snack Bar - I haven't tried this place yet - but have tried a couple of times and was deterred by the long line...it's always a good sign
