Khao San Thai kitchen YYC

I've only eaten at 3 Thai restaurants in Calgary, and Khao San was the best by far. Decor and presentation was amazing. The spring rolls and papaya salad were heavenly, and the curry was good. Not as flavourful as White Elephant, but the rest of the meal surpassed WE by far.
Service, Decor, Presentation were all 9.5, food was a solid 9.
Better than White Elephant, and miles above Ruan Thai.

best pizza in calgary?

Definitely my favourite place to eat in the belt line. Pizza is always fresh, they have delicious and exotic flavours, thin crust, and the only meat they serve is pork. I would recommend this place to everyone, and I do!

Inexpensive wine recommendations

I have to say, two of my favourite stand bys are Graffigna and Trapiche Reserve, both Argentina Malbecs. G is usually on sale once every few months somewhere in the city for a super cheap $8.99, which is a steal for what I consider a great tasting Malbec

best pizza in calgary?

I second Vogglio. Their Mexicana is my pizza of choice downtown.
I recently tried Pizza Bobs, not bad! And the fact it was wood fired made a taste difference.

00 flour Calgary

It was 2.99/lb at the italian super market in the north, what did you pay down south? And wouldn't the numerous Mercato's stock it?

YYC - Recommendations for supper near Chinook mall?

I ate at Pasquales once years ago, had really good apple cinnamon ribs. Small local restaurant, and seemed to have a large number of regulars ("Is this your first time here?" the hostess asked me).
Whenever I'm in the area though, I go directly to Bagolac Saigon, across from the Chinook C-Train station. I've never been "disappointed" per se, but over the years the portions have shrunk even though the prices have stayed the same. The noodle dishes are my favorite, the wor won ton is the best in the area, if not the city imo. And they have good chinese food as well.

New Pizza Place Coming to NW Calgary/Royal Oak

Well I've been working in Red Deer for the past 3 months, and have to say The Rock is my favorite place to go out to here. The draught is all their own craft beer, they have a great menu (even beer battered chicken fingers.. pretty odd but strangely good as long as you don't expect breaded fingers), and I find the pizzas pretty damn good. They had one pizza called the Wild Hog which I believe had... Italian sausage, bacon, and pulled pork on it. It was amazing. And great wings too. I can't wait for them to open a place in Calgary, even though its quite a drive from my place downtown, I'll definitely go a few times when I'm in the area. Don't make a drive from Calgary to RD just to try it, but if you're up here give it a shot definitely.

Best Burger in Calgary?

Had the burger at La Belle Patatte (the poutine place) in Canmore about 2 weeks ago, and man oh man.. It was pretty damn delicious. Definitely not dry, or overcooked. Next time you're in town for a poutine, give em a try.

Awesome, another franchise. (sarcasm)
However, I have eaten my words.. Both Mucho Burrito and 5 Guys completely exceed the "Franchise" label, so let's hope this place does as well!

South St Burgers Beacon HIll

I figure if you're in the area and craving something a bit different (beacon hill OR crossiron), then give them a shot. But I wouldn't go out of my way. They're nothing special.

Poutine in YYC?

I disagree about Blind Monk. I found their poutine very disappointing, to be honest.
Haven't tried Brasserie or Laurier Lounge yet, if I want some good poutine I take the hour drive out to La Belle Patate in Canmore. Best I've had in this province.

Aebleskiver pan

I was at the Home Outfitters in Northland Mall today, they were sold out. So we went to Market Mall to the Good Food Emporium, and they had a good quality cast iron one on for $20. And quite a few in stock.

ISO the best sandwich in YYC

My favorite place for a sandwich is Bella Crusta in downtown Canmore. Their Foccacia sandwiches are to die for! I recommend the BBQ beef one.
As for in the city, I was at the Lazy Loaf And Kettle today, and was quite impressed! Pricey, but delicious sandwiches!

Poutine in YYC?

It opened today.
Went there tonight, small lineup (which was to be expected). They had a huge list of their poutines, ranging from the Traditional (which is also vegetarian), to ones with 3 different kinds of pork, chicken, peas, montreal smoked meat, beef... You name it. My girlfriend prefers the traditional, but I decided to be a bit adventurous and go for (I forget the name) one with BBQ Beef, and sauteed onions and mushrooms. The BBQ flavour was good to me, and the onions and mushrooms were pretty good too. The cheese I got wasn't squeaky, and the sauce leaves a bit to be imagined. I tasted a bite or two of the Traditional, and I found the fries could've been cooked a bit longer, and according to the girlfriend, needs more gravy and cheese.
All in all, it wasn't too bad considering. The price wasn't that shabby, especially for Uptown (a Large Traditional was only $8, and thats definitely enough for 2), but if you're about quality, I think LBP in Canmore is a clear winner.
Its nice to actually have a poutinerie close to home though :)

Poutine in YYC?

I walked in there today, expecting it to be open, but they open on Sunday. What a disappointment, driving all the way back from Ft Mac, expecting a delicious new Poutine when I got here, only to find out that they weren't open yet lol.

Calgary: local specialties, must-try dishes?

The only thing I recommend from Peter's to out of towners are the milkshakes. They truly are good. Even my girlfriend who just moved here from Europe loves those shakes. Best she's had, according to her!
Other Calgary specialties I think would include Wicked Wedge, our numerous Vietnamese restaurants that everyone has mentioned, and Thai tai. Best vietnamese toasted subs I've ever had.
And a heads up, for that person that says the sausage-impales-into-a-bun is a calgary specialty, they're all over Europe :P They call them French hot dogs (sometimes they use the long skinny red sausages/weiners, sometimes the thicker ones). I see them all over Denmark and Scandinavia.

Poutine in YYC?

Really? Wow. I haven't had them since April and they were good back then, and the year and a bit I've been eating there previous.
In that case, apologies for my recommendation.

Fazer and other Finnish candy in Calgary

Does anyone know where I could possibly find Fazer brand candies or chocolates? Or other such candies in Calgary?
I found some Halva Finnish Sweet Licorice in a store today in Eau Claire Market, but nothing Salmiak (salty black licorice flavoured), just Strawberry, which still tastes great.

Poutine in YYC?

Next time you're in Lethbridge, try out Red Dog Diner downtown. In my opinion, it has the best poutine outside of Quebec. And cheapish. Also, montreal smoked meat sandwiches. And cherry coke on fountain.
Great little place, open late, and run by Quebecois. I drove all the way down there one day just for their poutine. It was phenomenal.

Downtown YYC - Hot Dog stuffed into a half baguette place.

In most places in Europe they call it a French hot dog, or French style.
Also, isn't there a place in the Saddledome that serves them, under the moniker of Pocket Dogs?

Princess cake

They sell them at the Ikea Swedish food market after the cash registers. Come in a frozen 4 pack, and they're deadly! My girlfriend is from Scandinavia, and she thought they were better then they are back home.
