More Affordable Source of Organic Sweet Potatoes?

Market Basket sometimes has bagged organic sweet potatoes . Costco and BJ's do not have organic potatoes though they do have organic carrots. $2.49 is rather high for sweet potatoes, Whole occasionaly has then on sale in the fall.

Best Whole Foods in Boston Area

Fresh Pond has to be one of the busiest , I have found Bedford to have the best dairy and local food selection. The Andover store is small and has horrible service.
The best in my opinion have to be Dedham , Portland Me and soon to open in Lynnfield should be a good one.

Which ice cream stands don't make their own?

Well I can report on who makes their own ice cream,
Richardsons :Middleton
Bensons: Boxford
Down River and White Farms in Ipswich
Shaw farm :Dracut
Mad Maggies: North Andover

Went recently to Great Brook farm in Carlisle , many of there flavors were the same as Bliss Brothers. Keep in mind many ice cream shop buy a base them add the fillings. More like semi-hommade but still fresh.

Thoughts on ZuZu's Cafe in Wakefield?

The location is great between the lake and downtown. The place is mainly just take-out and patio, inside there is really no atmosphere and when i was there it was quite warm. Large and creative menu with lots of sandwiches and entrees. The one plus is the food is made fresh and most of it is healthy.

I was quite disapointed when I went last time, I ordered a hot latte and it was disgusting . They steamed the milk for about a minute and it was thick and scorched tasting. Coffee might just not be there thing so stick with the food.

Went to WIlson Farms for 1st time. It was great! What are some of your favorite things there?

My go to item at Wilson farm is always what ever is inseason or the special of week. They do carry Shaw farm dairy products and have fresh eggs. Yes many of the grocery items and out of season produce is overpriced but everything they sell is great quality.

Italian Rum Cake near Worcester

Wegmans had one advertised in the flyer, I am sure it is not the best tasting . Maybe try Gerardo's in West Boylston.

Fresh seafood restaurants in Essex, MA

Shea's riverside has a nicer view and recently renovated, many of the Essex restaurants are rather dated. There is also Ithaki in Ipswich which has very fresh food and a much nicer atmosphere.

Birthday cake with quality ingredients .

I am looking for a bakery that actually uses decent ingredients not from a mix or loaded with shortening frosting. I don't need a fancy cake just good tasting and real. I have not found too many bakeries that are ingredient focused ex: local/organic products, cage free eggs and real butter.
Any ideas would be helpful, looking for north of Boston.

ISO Great Boston Doughnuts

Henrys Market in Beverly makes an excellent donut everyday buy Sunday. They have some creative flavors yet some classics. they are the largest and best priced around. Kanes are good but getting pricey for a donut. A real classic hole in the wall with true New England flavor is Marty;s in Ipswich nothing like it.

ISO unhomogenized pasteurized milk

The Brand at Whole Foods in the plastic bottles is from New York called skytop farms , there is not much info about them around . Tried there heavy cream before it was very grassy/metalic like tasting. The best creamtop milk i have tried has been at Appleton farms.

Colarusso's Farm Stand Reading : New Store opening soon

The new store is very nice has a bard like feel and very open. Though it is just the same as the old store as for products. Went on opening day and everything was very fresh and of high quality. Other than produce they still had the breads, Dom's meat and a few other little items. Not as much local items as other "farm markets" the only option for milk was Hood. Overall still a great addition to the area with better quality than large grocery stores. Just hard to compare it to other store such as Wilson, Verril or Tendercrop as this is not a farm.

Looking for a restaurant to host a dinner party for 30 in the Derry/Hampstead area

The Common Man in Windham is a really cozy New England type of place. A bit further north is the Puritan backroom in Manchester.

Martinos Deli and liquors RT 1 Peabody

Yes the store has a fancy shiny look . The prices do make it harder to be a daily customer . In my opinion if you are going to charge $3.50 for cup of coffee it better be the best coffee but they are located on rt .1 so the location does not go with the prices. For the price of the sandwiches you can just go to any restaurant for lunch.

Colarusso's Farm Stand Reading : New Store opening soon

Yet this will be a produce store and garden center. Not a farmstand but hope they will carry local products beside produce local milk and breads would be nice , which they have not done too much of in the past. Wilson's also has lots of out of season and imported produce too.
They no longer carry the monkey bread due to Karen's bakery closed.

Colarusso's Farm Stand Reading : New Store opening soon

Calareso's farm stand on Route 28 in Reading is opening a new store should be open in mid March the building looks quite impressive . It has the same look as Wilson and Verrill farms building but the difference is that this is next to the highway and not a farm so hope they will have some quality products. Also Just Desserts from Wakefield will have a location inside.
Great to have a yet another produce/grocery option off of Rt 128.

Appleton Farms Ipswich : Fresh Jersey Milk

Yes the milk is much more expensive than other local milks , Yet a great quality product. It does have a more of acquired and heavy taste. I have found milk solids still floating in it so surely not your grocery store milk! The hours are tough for sales being weekday afternoons and maybe some limited Saturdays .

February 2012 Fresh & local markets, farm stands, CSA, Delivery etc

Went this morning to the Winchester Winter Market , It was ok mostly like a craft fair type of event. As for produce there was three table that did sell some high quality and fresh produce . Oakdale farm had greenhouse lettuce and tomatos which was a nice treat, Winter moon had some big yellow carrot @ $3 pound, Silverbook farm has some green and roots. It is ok if in the area or going to Whole foods in Woburn but not worth the trip too far. Somerville is much more exciting and happening.
On Sunday is the Newburyport market which has a game day theme , then also there is Tendercrop down the street for some local meats and greens. A great area to visit too.
The new Water Fresh farm in Hopkinton does like nice form the website. would love to hear some more feedback.
Seem that eating locally this winter is more accessible this winter especially in time of the winter than last year. Dont forget you can also enhance your dish with local dairy, seafood and bread.

February 2012 Fresh & local markets, farm stands, CSA, Delivery etc

Somerville Winter Market has been great this season while having a large selection of fresh produce and some extras shipped up from down south. Yes you will need to spend a extra couple of $$$$ here but every has been excellent quality.
Winchester now has a winter market but not as much produce.
Newburyport has market every couple week more a social event than market but still plenty of goods.
I have found Tendercrop farm to get us through the winter from meats, eggs and greenhouse spinach. There still plenty of local food around just you have to look for it and be more creative with your shopping and cooking.
