I've wondered for a long time if the numerous food carts, stalls etc. all over London now have any sort of government inspection for cleanliness, health risks etc. They're certainly in place in restaurants and I remember living somewhere once where the 'offenders' had their name published in the city newspaper.

Where to lunch?

I wouldn't all Hibiscus 'French.' There's also The Square if you want 'modern British,' or a good gastropub like Anchor & Hope or... Great Queen St.

Late night dinner in Kensington?

You've been very lucky. :-) When we drive home from Heathrow it can take 20 minutes or over an hour depending on the M25. I think it's the exception to have no queue at border control these days.

Late night dinner in Kensington?

How can someone land at LHR at 9 and be in London by 10? I think just leaving the plane, going through customs and immigration etc. would take at least 30 minutes and probably more. Heck, I hope you're right. I return later this month and hope those queues are gone!

solo dining options

I often eat lunch alone in London - never a problem finding a place... seems the same as it did in NYC. I like to recommend the Mandeville Hotel for a quiet tea that one could enjoy alone. It's a pretty room with nice food and service.

Harrod's has a ton of eating choices in their food hall. I read recently that someone had opened a bistro there, too, and I've been wanting to try that out. The museums usually have very good cafes - I really like the one at the Victoria & Albert.

Gordon Ramsay Restaurants

Personally, I'd take my 13 year old (I do have grandchildren near this age) to Bread St. Kitchen. I haven't eaten there, but it sounds a lot less stodgy than some of the other choices. I think your foodie will enjoy it. I haven't been to Maze since the previous chef left, but it's a fun restaurant with things that are certainly 'different.'

The Sportsman - Lunch Reservation for 2 on 5/18/12 - I need to forfeit

We would have taken it but I'm going to the States next week and am swamped.

Afternoon Tea and Eats [London]

The Mandeville Hotel off of Oxford St. does a very does, quiet afternoon tea. There's also one people like at The Wallace Collection, an often overlooked gem of a museum with a nice restaurant.

Looking for a box of liquid certo pectin in little pouches.

You might be able to order it online at www.creamsupplies.co.uk. This company sells a lot of things like that.

Best Chinese restaurant in London?

I saw that offer this morning. I'd say it's a very good deal with lots of menu choices, although quite a few favorites don't appear on the what's available list.

breakfast near Sofitel St James? [London]

Here's a place with good coffee... very popular with Londoners. It's not much of a walk from your hotel.

You'll be near a lot of good spots for dinner in Soho. I can't vouch for the loudness or scene-y requirement but I'm sure others here will comment. There's Quo Vadis with modern British.. and also Dean St. Townhouse. I'd book now for almost anywhere in the area near your hotel.

Best Korean in New Malden?

There is quite a large carpark about two blocks from the restaurants. It's the first right hand turn after you pass Sorabol on the right coming from the A3 and just near the Lidl store. We've never parked on the High St. or anywhere else as this is so convenient. Around 6, there's always a space... not sure about lunchtimes.

Best Korean in New Malden?

Thanks, we will definitely check out Burlington Rd. There's a huge Indian market next to Sorabol, but you probably know that Nii. :-)

Best Korean in New Malden?

The people cooking don't hover at the table, which is good. They come back to check the food and to be honest, we've only done the grilled stuff once, and it didn't bother me at all... doesn't take all that long. Nothing else is done at the table, and you don't have to order the grill. I'm not sure if Sorabol is the only restaurant doing this. So far, I haven't seen it elsewhere that I remember.

Best Korean in New Malden?

They are. We often go for lunch on a weekend. And the restaurants are very close to the train station. Luckily, we can drive but if one can't, it's not that long a ride from Waterloo.

Best Korean in New Malden?

We go to New Malden and last time tried the Palace. I'd agree with everything that was said above. The food is very good and probably in a league with Sorabol. It's hard to go wrong in New Malden with Hamgipak or these other two. All are quite small, so I'd book ahead for sure.

I don't think the Palace does the at-the-table grilled meats, and Sorabol does that very well - probably the only difference. Both have good service.

EATING IN LONDON

Keep in mind, Jose, that if your clients are in London during the Olympics, it will be difficult to book restaurants for that time. I hope they're coming towards the beginning of July and not the end!

I'd also recommend Bistro Bruno Loubet, Min Jiang for excellent Chinese food, and Ishbilia if they'd like to try some Lebanese dishes.

Canadians visiting London

I loved Launceston Place - that was a good recommendation. That said, there's a new chef, but I'd imagine the food is still excellent.

Come to think of it, we ate at Deux Salons before seeing War Horse. I'd choose that over Dishoom.. defo. :-)

Canadians visiting London

I like Dishoom... sort of 'snacky' food and very close to War Horse. If you want a more upscale, Indian meal, I'd suggest trying somewhere else for that. Since you have probably had lots of that cuisine in Toronto, I'd try something a bit different.. The Cinnamon Club. The room is beautiful and the food is too - more modern than traditional.

Food for 16 people by Trafalgar Square or the Globe theater

The Tate Modern has some nice restaurants. From what I remember, there's a large one with lots of seating on the main floor. I don't think it's too pricey, and it's not far from the Globe.

St Johns doughnuts, eccles cakes and bread, the best in London?

I mostly use the bags for heating up things rather than for really toasting. If one likes thick slices of bread, I guess they'd need a super-large toaster. The bags *are* good for something like the samosas that Waitrose or M&S sell, but they don't taste very good. :-)

I never thought about the frying pan as the American diner method, but I guess it is!

Southern Biscuits and Gravy in London

I don't think this is very 'Southern,' but Automat in London serves a good breakfast with the following:

Bourbon Vanilla French Toast with streaky bacon
Country Ham Muffin with fried egg and hash browns

Well, the South does have good bourbon!!

St Johns doughnuts, eccles cakes and bread, the best in London?

I use those bags on occasion but for a really good grilled cheese sandwich, nothing beats doing it in a frying pan. The cheese melts properly that way.

New Chef for Blueprint Cafe (London)

I was pleased to see that The Blueprint Cafe has a new chef, Mark Jarvis. He's taken over the kitchen and comes by way of Texture and time working for Raymond Blanc.

Fun place (alone Thursday) and with spouse sat/sun/onday [London]

I'm not sure when you'll be in London, but to get a booking at Pollen Social on a Saturday night, one must try pretty far in advance. I really enjoyed Bistro Bruno Loubet... casual atmosphere and delicious food. There's also Quo Vadis, although I won't have eaten there till this Saturday. It seems well-liked these days.

which dim sum restaurant in China town London

Do you know the regular price for the tea if one doesn't have the Groupon offer?

Ireland - First visit must eats

There have been quite a few postings on Ireland in the past year. Try using the search box above for some good tips, including Dublin.

If you want to check out the Southbank food market near Waterloo (real food festival website above) , it's worth visiting their website first to see what's on that particular week. I went past there last Friday and it was an Indian festival and nothing else was being sold. If one didn't like that cuisine, they were out of luck.

Best Chinese restaurant in London?

I was last at Haozhan a few months ago... seemed as good as the time before. It's not a very elegant place, but I like the food. I'm going to try to get to Tuli and Princess Garden one of these days. Thanks for talking about them.

Reservations during the Olympics

I think the others are correct that getting into the top London restaurants around the Olympics is going to be a tough slog. But go for it.. you have nothing to lose but some money on phone calls. Or.. think of someplace that isn't high on the minds of others, perhaps, but is very decent and a bit less popular. Min Jiang is a wonderful Chinese restaurant in a hotel on Kensington High St. It overlooks Kensington Gardens and would be lovely for a birthday celebration.. maybe someplace like that?

Perhaps I should open a restaurant during the Olympic weeks. :-)
