Healthy Dinner with White Girl

Chicken fried steak with white gravy, fried okra, and buttermilk biscuits around the Bay Area?

Yes, fried okra is really scarce. At least, that which is prepared like my Missouri-Okie grandmother used to make it. Fortunately, she taught me how to do it (lots of bacon fat and corn meal) so when I want it, I end up making it myself. CFS and B&G done properly are easier to find.

If NZ Sauvignon Blanc is Best Who's Second Best?

While I really like Sauv Blanc from New Zealand, I know many people who don't think that highly of it. It really depends on what you personally like. For me, a good SB distinguishes itself well from Chardonnay.

Chicken fried steak with white gravy, fried okra, and buttermilk biscuits around the Bay Area?

Seems like this kind of food would be more prevalent in the Central Valley of California.

What foods do you refuse to eat?

Liver in virtually any form.

Ohsawa Nama Shoyu soy sauce...is it supposed to be fizzy?

Seems like there was some fermentation while the bottle was sealed, but from now on it should be very stable. Keep it in the refrigerator for best results.

Ohsawa Nama Shoyu soy sauce...is it supposed to be fizzy?

Did the fizziness die down after you opened the bottle, or is it continuing to be fizzy?

I have been to sebo before but not to aka tombo. I find that sebo is very, very good and communication there is excellent. I would recommend sebo for sure.

"Least Favorite Vegetable" Poll

Bitter Melon is practically the national vegetable of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. There, they even have a beer made with it, with the bitter melon providing a lot of the bitterness in place of about half the hops. Pretty tasty, actually.

Are You Snacking on Anything Right Now?

Pretty much a sickening video. Nutella is not THAT good.

Driving from SF to Montecito: great spot for lunch half way?

I have always found it interesting that while King City is remarkable for really good and authentic Mexican food, nearby Gonzales is really not. What's in a name, anyway?

When they get your takeout order wrong yet again...

jmckee -- totally great attitude, and in true Chowhound spirit.

Dim sum at King Hua: A Pictorial Essay

As so many people have said, J.L., these photos are truly fantastic. Just glancing through them makes me quite hungry. Thanks for your hard work -- it is truly appreciated. If I were faced with this feast of an assortment, I'd quickly pack the camera away and dig in.

Why is the Olive Garden so reviled?

Rather than wonder why Olive Garden is so roundly reviled, it is somehow easier to find the answer in learning why Olive Garden is so loved by its customers.

Good "French Canadian/Quebecois" food

Make sure the place serves a good Sugar Pie!

san diego--business/client dinner

Just curious, but was the long-haired hippie-dude entertaining a group of oldsters in their 60s?

origin of the loco moco

When I mentioned that Loco Moko is the most "Hawai'ian" i meant it in the context of outside of Hawaii as it is the most popular Hawaiian dish encountered. To be honest, though, I have no idea what "SPAM Wasubi" is, but guess that it's a SPAM Musubi with plenty of wasabi inside.

Do people really drink a 4-ounce cup of coffee?

When we make coffee in the morning, we make a small pot and pour it into a thermos bottle.
Then, I fill my small coffee cup (about 3 ounces?) up about halfway and drink, refilling little by little when necessary to make sure the coffee in the cup is warm.

Restaurants and Bars around the world you would love to clone..

Very little chance I would go anyway. Hey, I still go to the Toronado when in SF, but pay in a way not to require change. Too many lessons learned.

origin of the loco moco

I keep imagining the Loco Moco was a dance craze from the early 60s. Still, you can't get any more Hawaiian than this popular dish.

Business lunch in Downtown/Mid Town Sac?

+1 for Il Fornaio, which I believe is on Capitol a few blocks from the river.

Restaurants and Bars around the world you would love to clone..

Hill food -- thanks for the tip about Noc Noc. Seems very comfortable for such a high concept execution.

Diet soda without Aspartame?

I avoid any kind of diet soda mainly because they usually taste just terrible. However, recently I had what I thought was a "flavored" sparkling water but was instead a diet soda that used sucralose (Splenda) but didn't indicate it clearly on the can. I thought it tasted pretty good for a diet soda. So I guess they are not all the same. However, I'll probably never have it again.
