Lockhart BBQ

My first time at Smitty's last week an it was a big D (disappointment). Brisket was chewy with not much smoke, or any other flavor. Even the ribs were chewy and not tender the way pork usually is. No sauce for the brisket but a sweet sop on the ribs. It was ok. I've eaten a lot of BBQ and this was definitely lacking.

Cajun in Austin?

What I want is some really good gumbo. If you ever ate at Chez Orleans in Houston (been closed for years) you know what I mean. I want it dark, thin with the taste of file loud and clear - none of this brown gravy gumbo that seems to be the standard. Gumbo's is close, Quality seafood's is disgusting. Any suggestions?

Best Enchiladas In Austin?

Sorry to say the Dart Bowl enchiladas are American cheese. Not the worst Am Cheese Enchs I've had, chile was pretty tasty.

Best Enchiladas In Austin?

Can't remember all the Tex-Mex I've tried - a dozen or two in the past year - Garcias, Polvos, Mesa Rosa, Maudies, Chuys and assorted hole-in-the wall places.
I'm from the Gulf coast, South of Houston, and I grew up on the cheese and onion enchiladas. dang, now I'm hungry!

I've got some ideas from this discussion so I'll be trying

Best Enchiladas In Austin?

I guess I am hopelessly plebian, but I judge all Tex-Mex eateries by their cheese enchilada.

To heck with the "authentic" sauces and combinations. I want a corn tortilla softened in some kind of hot oil, filled with mild cheddar and chopped onions, rolled and covered with chile gravy. Mmmm. Real cheese and lots of chopped onions rolled in a tortilla. Anything else doesn't do it for me.

I have found most TexMex cheese enchs in Austin to be filled with globs of American cheese with the texture of melted plastic. Maudie's is one of the worst because of the quantity of of the yellow goop in the enchs.

If you know of a place with those old-time cheese enchs, please direct me to it.

What Is America's Worst Restaurant Chain?

For all the Arby's haters out there, I have to say that their BLT is the BEST, and I am a BLT afficionado. I wouldn't eat their roast beef but I stand by their BLT.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Johnny Carino's - foolish me I tried it 3 times and they were 3 for 3 in the disgusting department.

Friday's is also a contender for nastiest food. And Chile's, too.

What Is America's Worst Restaurant Chain?

Dominos barely Pizza and Subway mystery meat on Mrs. Baird's hot dog buns.

Taco Hell is pretty uniformly bad, too.

tacos de fideo seco in Austin?

I've been looking for a place that sells these Mexican street tacos. They are a corn tortilla stuffed with fideo pasta with a tomato based sauce and cheese or crema? I'd gladly accept a recipe if there isn't a place to buy them.

Gumbo's

Just had my first meal at Gumbo's in Round Rock and service and food were very good.
Tasty salad with chevre, spiced apples and bacon dressing. Tender pork loin on a delicious bed of griiled onions. Dessert a chocolate custard that was more like pot de creme. Very rich.
Tried the gumbo and it was not perfect but I am picky about gumbo. It was very dark with a spicy bite that was just right. Had plentiful shrimp that weren't overcooked.
.But I like more file and wished the broth was thinner.
Still a cut above most restaurant gumbo.
I will definitely make a return visit.

Where can I find the best hot and sour soup in Austin?

Chile or peppercorn, just enough to give it a bite.

Where can I find the best hot and sour soup in Austin?

Din Ho was recommended but it was not what I am looking for.

I want a dark thinnish broth flavored with pepper and having a bit of a sour tang. The meat, fungus, egg, tofu in the soup should be large enough to be recognizable.

Every hot and sour I have had so far has too much cornstarch giving it an unpleasant gelatinous texture.

At Din Ho the meat and fungus was large enough to be a tasty bite, but the tofu and egg were in small bits that gave the soup the appearance of a hash. Broth had a gelatinous look and feel, and while flavorful, lacked the vinegarish zip I expect in hot and sour.
