Veggie near Montrose

hi, my friend from San Francisco is making a visit this weekend. we will be going to some art thing in the museum district. would appreciate any thoughts on a veggie-friendly restaurant in that part of town. we tried La Mexicana last time and it was sadly very mediocre.

Backstreet Cafe

totally in love with this place after today's brunch. all the food was great - i had the fried egg sandwich, with pesto and avocado. mimosa made with guava and pomegranate. my companion had the crab benedict.

i have now eaten at Backstreet 4 times and each time they have done so well. food is great, service is attentive but unobtrusive. really love this place!

Tony Mandola's

Really enjoyed this place for dinner.. Food was very good and service was caring but unobtrusive. Menu is pricy but good for a splurge.

Would like to try it again. Menu is heavy with seafood. Had a Cajun martini, did not enjoy it - weird taste of gin infused with jalapenos.

Ceviche got high marks from fellow diner; so did cioppino. My pasta with smoked chicken was only fair; the sun-dried tomatoes on top tasted like they came from a jar.

Blue Combo (fried seafood combo) was a big hit with fellow diners.

Bread pudding with apples for dessert was excellent.

Brunch in Houston?

huge fan of Hugo's, even though I've only been once ... it's beyond my price point. but wanted to mention they also have a Saturday brunch with a menu ... prices are more in the $10-$15 for an entree .... Sunday brunch is $27.

Groceries near Lakes on Eldridge Houston

Also, if you need a closer HEB, there is the one at Kirkwood and Westheimer. Decent produce section - can't speak to their meat section as I don't usually buy it - but there is a good selection of international items which may even have some Australian goods.

Looking for huge international market in Houston

Just wanted to throw 2 more cents in.........Phoenicia Deli is fantastic! There is both a restaurant (which I think is called "Deli") and a store (which I think may be called "Market"). Great bread, a bakery counter, a deli counter, etc. A complete store too - many of the "middle Eastern types" who go there obviously do all their grocery shopping there.

Field of Greens - Macrobiotic

Thanks WtotheN and Lily; I was panicking last week when I wrote that post, trying to find something that was vegetarian for my friend, while also wanting a really nice dining experience. And, as one of you said, I do hate to go to an all-veg place when the others in the group aren't vegetarian at all.

I spent over an hour on the internet and a few phone calls, and we wound up at Hugo's. Loved it! I wouldn't give it a "10" but definitely an 8+ and I'm definitely going back (when the budget allows for another fine dining experience).

Loved the decor and ambience. A bit dark for us (we're all over 50), but that's quibbling. The service was excellent - caring without being obtrusive - and that goes from the receptionist on the phone, right through to the valet parking afterwards.

Still not sure if the ceviche de atun was right, but it was an adventure. My friends both had wonderful looking salads. The Veg had the vegetable platter and loved it - I knew to recommend it because i've had the similar thing twice at Backstreet. I had the chiles rellenos and it was delicious. The chiles seemed a bit "tough" (like maybe they should have been cooked some more?) but otherwise the dish was excellent.

I skipped dessert but my friend's churros with hot chocolate looked incredibly tasty.

Searching for vegetarian restaurants and wondering about Field of Greens in the Montrose. Has anyone been? I don't generally like macrobiotic.

Indian or Mexican in Montrose for a Vegetarian

Thanks. Coincidentally, I went with these same 2 friends to Indika on their last trip. We liked it (and may try it again), but still looking for other options.

I'll check out Hugo's menu for sure.

Indian or Mexican in Montrose for a Vegetarian

Good day Houston Chowhounds. I have some friends visiting from out of town and one is a vegetarian. I'll do some research myself, but am wondering what y'all would recommend for Mexican or Indian in the Montrose or near Montrose. TIA.

Need a new Tex-Mex experience: what's your favorite in Houston?

Thank you texmexgirl - La Hacienda is absolutely my favorite too. They are the real deal in Tex-Mex; i think they have been in that location for over 30 years. I always get one of the numbered plates (#3 or #6) - which include guacamole, a crispy beef taco and a cheese enchilada i think. The chili gravy is fabulous. I also recently tried their green pepper stuffed with beef - OMG everything good Tex-Mex should be.
Also fond of Los Cucos in Memorial Park - they are slightly more Mexican and slightly less Tex-Mex.

Hounds' Take on Montrose

Katz Deli on Westheimer was suprisingly good the other day. I had the Cobb Salad which had nice chicken, bacon, blue cheese - so many places scrimp on this stuff, or the bacon is greasy, for example. Service was friendly.

Here's a Challenge...

I want to take a group of friends out for a nice breakfast or brunch. One friend is strict vegetarian (no eggs) but does love all kinds of breakfast breads, including waffles and pancakes. Another friend is Muslim and eats halal exclusively. Any suggestions?

Taquerias In Houston

This is a big topic, and I wanted to throw my 2 cents in. Spanish Flowers is in the old North Side (which I think of as the original Mexican part of the city). It got popular several years back, and some people think it has suffered because of that, but I thought of it right away when someone mentioned tacos with just onion and cilantro. They seem really authentic, and they're open 24 hours.
The other place I wanted to mention - even though I may take some heat - is Taco Cabana. They are a huge chain, but I am consistently pleased with the straight-up crispy beef tacos there. There is a very particular taste to a good Tex-Mex beef taco that I'm always looking for, and they have it, at least at my local Cabana.

Reasonable Indian/Pakistani Food in Houston

My Indian and Pakistani friends at work say really good things about London Sizzler, which is near Hillcroft and SW Fwy.
I've been to a bunch of Indian buffets. My fave is still Pavani, which is near SW Fwy and Beltway 8. Sorry can't give better directions, I could drive there but can't think of what exit it is. Pavani is nice and relaxed and the service is friendly. Their buffet has a few more choices than most buffets.

Thanks, this is excellent. Was pleased to see the writer included Indika. I rarely go to an "expensive" meal (above my price point) but went there over a year ago and still fondly remember it.

Thanksgiving in New Orleans

Intriguing question. Holidays can be tough for finding restaurants. I browsed the list someone else posted. You didn't specify a price range, but I ate at Commander's Palace 5 years ago and still remember the entire meal, it was that good...............

Cafe Red Onion in Houston

I've had mixed experiences at the Cafe Red Onion on Eldridge. Interesting food, great service, bad service, etc. I work in the area and have only eaten lunch there. I did wander in there one night and it seems to be a bit of a club-type scene, I think.

Hounds' Take on Montrose

This is weird, I'm a gay man and this is the 2nd time I've lived in Houston, but today I found myself driving through Montrose and wondering again, where to eat? I don't live in the area, so I don't really keep up, but darned if I couldn't think of anyplace except Niko Niko and Baba Yega. Oh and Barnaby's.

Where do y'all go for lunch in Montrose?

Dinner Recommendations - Open to Anything

Totally agree about Backstreet Cafe (have been trying to remember the name lately ... thanks). I've been 2 or 3x and each time was memorable. Delicious food including a vegetarian entree I still remember, 3-4 years later, and warm and attentive service!

Recommendations for places in Houston that are local & delicious?

Agree about Cafe Pita. I went with 2 out of town friends, one who is Serbian, and was quite underwhelmed. It's on Westheimer near Wilcrest. The food was probably quite authentic, but bland, bready and nothing special at all.

Looking for Breakfast Places open early near or west of Galleria

Sad to say, Houston doesn't seem to offer much for early morning breakfast fine dining.

I'd skip House of Pies. It's not much different than IHOP. Actually IHOP's pancakes are better.

You might try 59 Diner. The locations are not that near the Galleria but I find them to be reliable and good quality.
