Dutch baby pancake?

dunno how fantastic it is since i haven't had one there in years, but i believe that DINAH'S FAMILY RESTAURANT (on sepulveda near LAX) still serves them.
the small size is called a Dutch baby
the large size is called a German pancake.

"Pink Slime " fallout

judging by the number of friends and acquaintances that seemed to think that this was NEW information, i've concluded that this was FAR from "common knowledge."

"Pink Slime " fallout

Trader Joe's already does that with one product: guacamole.
in their produce department they sell a product in a styrene box with contains:
2 fresh avocados
1 fresh lime
1 shallot
1 small tomato
1 clove of garlic

essentially, it is a "kit" with which the buyer can make their own guacamole

"Pink Slime " fallout

imho, pink slime did not make beef affordable, it made it legal to sell garbage to people and to label the stuff as beef.

FOODIE ON A DIET :( ... Need Healthy Restaurants

also, for a wide variety of entree salads that can be ordered "dressing on the side" (i also usually order lemon wedges which allow me to be happy using less dressing), don't forget 26 beach.
i'd be the first to admit that they aren't as consistently perfect as they were years ago, but they still win the "entree salad" category imho.
(one caveat, don't get the ceviche salad, it's not as good as all the other entree salads)

Not so Glad-stone's Long Beach

you took one for the team.
thank you.

Nonreactive cookware

anecdotal evidence that supports cheulmay's contention re: teflon being dangerous;

every person who i know who keeps parrots as pets or cares for parrots in their home has had to ditch their teflon-coated cookware because the FUMES are TOXIC to parrots.
to me, this is like bringing a canary/parrot into the mine...

i've been replacing all my teflon and non-stick cookware. thankfully i found a ceramic coated skillet, made in the USA that is non-stick enough to cook sunnyside up eggs. .

Alternative to Vitamix blender

i do one of those every morning for my daughter using my ordinary 500 watt Oster with the ice crusher blade. Trader Joe's frozen organic strawberries, and Trader Joe's frozen organic raspberries, regular milk or soy milk, and you're good to go.
for myself, i make at least one or two ice-blended mochas a day using valrhonna cocoa powder, coffee, sweetner, soy milk and ice. start with the room-temp ingredients so that the sweetner melts before you add the cold ingredients.
for a change i'll also make smoothies with a banana, a little sweetner, valrhonna cocoa powder, soy milk and ice .

i like the glass blender jar as opposed to plastic, and i like the square-shaped top ones better than the other shapes because pouring from them is more precise.
ALL the dirty parts go in my dishwasher every day: i disassemble the jar, the blade, the gasket, and the jar collar and put the small parts on the top shelf in the dishwasher with the lid and put the glass jar part in the bottom section and run the dishwasher on high-temp wash.

Alternative to Vitamix blender

gotta say that when staying as a houseguest with friends who had a KA, i found it to be far INFERIOR to my ordinary,500 watt Oster with the ice crusher blade and with the "square-topped" glass jar for making all ice-blended drinks and smoothies.

on paper, the KA looked better, but, in use, it was FAR FAR worse.

Wanted: A 10-cup Coffee Maker That Will Also Make 2-4 Cups

my cuisinart, which i bought at costco years ago, does the job.

Fermented Bean Curd

i think that Lauren is probably talking about NATTO.
most japanese restaurants in LA serve it, and i, too, eat it regularly.

Why should I buy tilapia?

I Had a Great Crabcake today at Veggie Grill

Ciao Bob:
for a hunk of deep fried veggie matter that DOESN'T taste good, get the veggie burger at Truxton's
for a hunk of deep fried veggie matter that TASTES GOOD, i'd recommend the crab cake at veggie grill.

kevin:
i'd interpret this more as, "all the hounds are getting behind THIS DISH"
at least, that's MY position.
normally i won't get in my car and drive for anybody's veggie burger, even veggie grill's veggie burger, but i WILL get in my car and drive for this crab cake. (fwiw, i think that the dish is improved by removing the pickle slice they put on top of it).

I Had a Great Crabcake today at Veggie Grill

fwiw, for salads, if you are near Marina del Rey, you might give 26 beach a try.
imho, their entree salads and burgers are better than their other entree items. also, if you get one of their burgers, get the fries with it because their side salads are not nearly as good as their entree salads.)

FOODIE ON A DIET :( ... Need Healthy Restaurants

not a direct answer to your question, but here are a couple of suggestions:

1)ceviche is a good choice at any good seafood restaurant.
2) most raw bar choices at any good seafood restaurant will be low calorie/low fat and high protein.
3) avoid most soupy/stewy dishes at restaurants because it is practically impossible to gauge how much fat they use and what type of fat they use.

FOODIE ON A DIET :( ... Need Healthy Restaurants

agree with goodhealthgourmet's list with only 2 caveats:

1) the problem with Lemonade is that their salads come pre-dressed, so you can't specify "dressing on the side, please."
for salads, the easiest way to control the fat is to control the amount of dressing.

2) the grilled vegetable salad at the Ivy contains much more fat than you would think (can't divulge my source on this, but the person is trustworthy)

FOODIE ON A DIET :( ... Need Healthy Restaurants

when someone requests low fat food, indian food is not what comes to mind.
the amount of ghee that is used in each dish is hard to discern.
each dish can become a sort of wild card in terms of calories and saturated-fat.

that said, (not for OP because of location), samosa house in culver city usually has a couple of offerings that are made with oil instead of ghee to accomodate their vegetarian customers.

don't have any idea about it's healthfulness one way or the other.

"Sushi at Sunset" the best sushi by the Sushi King.....Chef Keith Roberts.

someone who knows good food claimed that the food at the bubba gump chain was amazing? unbelievable!

~ What are ingredients that are best to buy (semi)-prepared rather than whole to save time and effort ~

trader joes frozen prepared organic brown rice.
nuke it for less than a minute and it comes out perfectly every time.
pour out the exact amount you need each time so there is no waste.

Low-fat, low-calories vegetarian snacks

i tend not to think of almonds as low fat.

Omnivore Interested In Vegetarian Foods

even though i'm not a vegetarian, i've been eating eat those portion sizes of vegetables for years.
to me, a 5oz bag of baby lettuce is an average sized salad.
5 oz of asparagus sound like a single serving to me.

Faux Meat - Recommendations

there us an indian restaurant in LA (samosa house--the location on berryman and washington) that always offers delicious curried jackfruit.
if you get it to go, it's about 8oz for $4 or so (completely prepared, just reheat)

Faux Meat - Recommendations

i like sloppy joe sauce enough that you could put it on cardboard and i'd probably like it.
my guess is that it's the sugar in it that so appeals to me. . . .

Why do no national burger chains have veggie burgers?

the veggie burger has been tried.
i did all i could to support the effort, but not enough other customers supported the product.
they served it with a barbeque sauce iirc.

"Sushi at Sunset" the best sushi by the Sushi King.....Chef Keith Roberts.

can't figure out how the place stays in business. . .

"Sushi at Sunset" the best sushi by the Sushi King.....Chef Keith Roberts.

PeterCC:
imho, bubba shrimp's version is substantially worse than the new KS.

neither one worth eating.
neither one compares to the old KS, which actually was chow-worthy.

"Sushi at Sunset" the best sushi by the Sushi King.....Chef Keith Roberts.

ok, since you asked:

1) the quantity offered by KS for the money was adequate
BUT
2) the quality of the shrimp, was inferior to that of the shrimp they used to serve in the old days.
although the shrimp were large, they were not at all sweet, they were rubbery, and they were way overcooked. Dunno where they sourced the stuff, but it bears NO resemblance to the sweet, tender, shrimp they consistently served in the old days.
and
3) the quality of the sauce was also way inferior to the sauce that they served in the old days. was more like salty water with old, woody, bleached-out rosemary floating in it. (where did they even find this old stuff? the 99cent store offers better quality spices. it's not like rosemary is an exotic ingredient. . . )

if they were going to have such a disconnect in terms of quality from what they used to serve, maybe they should have given the place a different name.

at any rate, there will always be a customer base of folks who like quantity and may or may not care about quality of preparation: i'm just not part of that base.

imho, this dish, in it's present incarnation is simply not worth eating.

Birthday Sushi

for a sushi restaurant, in particular, one not only has high capital risk, high labor costs, VERY costly and perishable inventory that comes at a very volatile
price, and a fickle customer base.
(what could possibly go wrong?)

the fact that we are still discussing this restaurant shows that they are doing most things right while navigating a very perilous business. ..

it's pretty easy to sit on the sidelines and discuss what you think keizo should earn by the fruit of his labor, intelligence, and the financial risk he took.

in any case, if there are financial benefits that come his way as a result of all of this, imho, he entirely deserves every cent.
