Wow, that's unique. Could you post the recipe?

Thank you, I do love Zurek, I could not stop eating it when I was in Krakow last Summer. That's also on my list to create soon.

I'm fairly certain now it's either this, Heidelberg Rye Sour (unavailable) http://www.kingarthurflour.com/shop/items/heidelberg-rye-sour-4-oz
or one of these (in 50# bags!!!)

Help me find "powdered sour" [moved from Home Cooking]
I've been going through a Polish cookbook of mine with the desire to make Polish Rye like many places here in Chicago. Just wondering if anyone has a suggested source for "powdered sour" which the author describes as "An integral ingredient that gives Rye bread its distinctive mellow, tangy, sour flavor. Powdered sour is available at any quality baking supply house or through mail order"
Questions:
1) What is a good source for this either online or in Chicago? A cursory search of the internet did not help me immediatley . . which leads me to
2) Searching for "powdered sour" reveals links to "powedered sour cream" . . same thing? related?
It was suggested elsewhere this may be the same thing, is it? http://www.kingarthurflour.com/shop/items/deli-rye-flavor-4-oz
Thanks!
White (Easter) Borscht
I found this link accurate as I recreate my Dad's White Borscht. He gave me his recipe and I must note, it is very different from Zurek mentioned below. http://easteuropeanfood.about.com/od/polishsoups/r/whitebarszcz.htm
I think the key is that it always starts with sausage broth . .
I boil fresh Easter sausage (garlic & marjoram pork sausage, we never used cured or smoked), add potatoes, sour cream, cornstarch, mushrooms, bay leaf, lemon juice. We eat it with Rye bread. .
Anniversary Dinner in London
It's not close to Picadilly, but you may try Gordon Ramsey's Narrow. It's as high class British food you can get. Very, very tasty. Not quite pre fix fine dining, but everything is done very well. For this time of year, it's location on the river is fantastic. Ask for a table on the pavillion, along the floor to ceiling open door/windows. . .
if you go early enough you could take the thames clipper there and back for a romantic boat trip . . . and see london from the river. . . or you can take the tube/DLR or a cab.
Food shop near Waterloo
yes greensmiths is nice. great place for brunch or coffee too.
Mexican food stand - Elephant & Castle/London
best tacos in london. hands down. i made sure to see him on cinco de mayo . . he also had killer homemade horchada
viva arturo!
Brandy Old Fashioned Sweet - my Quest
for a rocks glass:
1 sugar cube
1 cherry
orange slice
4 shakes of bitters
cherry juice or grenadine to taste (for myself i leave it out, but this adds more sweetness, obviously)
muddle the above things.
add rocks, brandy and club soda again to taste
so tough to find a place that makes these well. if you are in milwaukee this receipe is pretty close to those served at the palomino in bay view (my old corner bar)
wedding: unique catering
Wondering if anyone has any advice. I found this thread, http://www.chowhound.com/topics/432805 and will check those out. However my fiancee and I have been to 4-5 weddings this summer already, and have been extremely underwhelmed by the plated dinners. We are getting married in Frankfort, IL at http://www.cdandme.com. It's kind of a blend between indoors and outdoors and we were thinking it would be fun to leverage that in our catering choices. Something unique, that could take advantage of the outdoors. I'm really trying to avoid plated chicken or beef, no matter how good. my intials thoughts were having something grilled/roasted on site. anyhow, if you've seen something unique at an outdoor wedding, or know a creative caterer that would have good suggestions, let me know, thanks!
Where to Go for the Best Hot Dog
no one has mentioned my favorties so I'll post them. budacki's on damen and lawrence. 2$ dog and fries. . . too easy when I'm getting off the el. and wolfy's on Peterson. . . always stop on my way to the highway. does no one else feel hot doug's crazy hours, lines around the block and random closings a bit annoying? I'm surprised no one's mentioned it.
Where to Go for the Best Hot Dog
huh I just looked up the address. I live near ashland and foster and i've never seen this place. I'll have to check it out. I frequent Budacki's (damen & lawrence) and Wolfy's on Peterson.
Best Chicago BYOB (Casual)
Thanks for the suggestions. I will add them all to my list and post some reviews as we go.
Best Chicago BYOB (Casual)
I'm starting a dinner club with my friends in Chicago and I'm focusing on BYOB places only. By BYOB I am meaning the casual, no cork fee, places. Anyone have any suggestions? Preferred dining area would be within range of Lakeview/Lincoln Park/Uptown. Thanks!
Wanted: Anthony Bourdain experience this weekend!
888 was closed last time I tried to go :( luckily tank noodle was bustling as usual.
Detroit. Coney Island?
yeah I spend a lot of time there and never got it. in Wisconsin they would be "Family Restaurants" but I think it's because of the Coney dogs? which are quite revolting to me. I asked a lot of Detroit natives when I was there and no one could really give me an answer.
One treat a day for the rest of your life?
dark, rich, pho. raw beef and tons of thai basi and lime.
Your favorite sandwich. Ones you make at home.
my father and I make Polish sausage every spring. basically unsmoked pork sausage with lots of garlic and majoram. anyhow, I'll always boil those to cook, and put in the fridge. when I need a snack I will halve a link lengthwise, put in on some good polish rye with horseradish mustard. mmmm. if the sausage is not around then second is smoked ham, horseradish mustard and sharp wisconsin cheddar
Did we make the right choice? Review our food choices!
a great place for breakfast near Wrigley is Julius Meinl's. a european/vienese type place, get baked eggs with salmon and creme fraiche. . sit on the patio and enjoy! mmmmmm. my favorite sushi is coast in bucktown. yes it's not chicago's speciality but this place is BYOB, which makes up for it :)
Best croissant from Chicago bakery
I live a block away from the Isabella Bakery on Foster. croissants there are great, croissant sandwiches are better, and the empanadas rule! and if anyone happens to go there, make sure you get a chille rellano sandwich! outstanding, everything is dirt cheap!
Thoughts on these choices for a group dinner?
I brought a group of 8 to Mambo Grill and was pleasently surprised.
