Same here. When I hear people refer to one of those concoctions with instant pudding and bananas in them as ambrosia, I shudder.

Big party, Everyone brings a big salad or any type - what would you bring?

That curry couscous salad sounds so good! Would you mind sharing the recipe?

Where to eat in Hammond, LA area ?

Original poster has probably starved to death by now, since this post is over 3 years old.

Driving Hwy 72 east from Memphis thru Corinth, Muscle Shoals, Decatur, Huntsville, Scottsboro and S. Pittsburgh

I'll have to second Clarkafella's rec of Abe's, and add that their pork tenderloin on a biscuit makes a mighty tasty breakfast, too.

What are homemade southern-style biscuits supposed to be like?

Whew! I'm not alone. ;)

"Those are baking powder biscuits with no leavening"

In Mississippi we consider baking powder to be leavening.

Mississippi - help!

Abe's is the name of it.

Restaurants outside of New Orleans

We ate at Joe's Dreyfus Store about a month ago, and it was excellent. Since it was our first visit, though, I have no basis for comparison.

Catfish in Savannah, TN

I forgot to mention that the original building burned down 20 or 30 years ago, but the food didn't change. I also didn't mention that you'll have a view of the river, and might see a barge go past. That still thrills me. I'm a dork.

Catfish in Savannah, TN

Don't miss Hagy's Catfish Hotel at Shiloh. It's been there almost forever, and has great fried catfish, hushpuppies, and coleslaw. Their coleslaw is unusual, in that it's served without dressing and you add whatever you want at the table. I always opt for their neon-orange coleslaw dressing, but DH prefers the blue cheese. They also have great country ham with biscuits and red eye gravy.

Fried chicken in Alabama or Mississippi?

All of these are in Tennessee, near (around 20 miles away from) Corinth, MS. Ed Shaw's is at Shiloh, not Pickwick. Another good bet is Hagy's Catfish Hotel, also at Shiloh.
