NYC Girls First time in Toronto

Bar Isabel for the food and cocktails. A deservedly very busy place though. Only open for dinner but open until late.

Congee Queen - 1st timer

I've had the best luck with the deep fried pork chop, spicy turnip cake, e-fu noodles and the rice noodles with beef and XO sauce. I try to stay away from dishes with shrimp because they tend to be bland and mushy and the chicken can have an off-taste to it. The noodles in soup tend to be poor due to the bland, less-than-al dente noodles. The wontons are perpetually overseasoned and taste like they've been sitting in a brine solution. The congee is OK and the fried noodles are OK.

Which location? It's a pretty mediocre chain overall. The quality can be maddeningly inconsistent from visit to visit with surprisingly high highs interspersed with the occasional borderline inedible low. It's the convenient location and the prospect of catching them on a good night that keeps me going back for more. Good luck!

Origin North - Anyone been?

It depends a lot on what sort of experience you're expecting.

I've found the food to be more interesting than how odd or dull it sounds on the menu.

Overall, I've enjoyed it the three times I've been but there are certain dishes that are definitely skippable.

I think of it as sort of a high–end casual chain, sort of like Earl's or Joey only better.

If you're curious, give it a try but keep your expectations tempered. The location will bring me back even though I wasn't blown away by the food. It was good enough compared to the other options in the area, most of which truly are dire.

Please Critique My Toronto Must-Try List (Updated and Revised)

Bakery - Nadege
Ice Cream - Greg's
Chinese - Maple Yip, Spring Villa Chinese Cuisine (haven't been here in a while though)
Italian - F'Amelia, L'unita (not as good as Enoteca Sociale though)
Pizza - Fabricca (crispy Roman-style crust)
Mexican - Dos Amigos (haven't been there lately)
Greek - Mezes
Indian - Amaya (not the Bread Bar)

When will Top Chef Texas air in Canada?

Did Top Chef Masters season 3 ever air on FN Canada? I noticed that it's still not available on iTunes Canada. And neither season of TC Just Desserts is available either.

Bon Appetit Magazine Going Totally Downhill

No ads, no magazine.

Either that, or $30 cover price, and it's a book.

Sorry, but that's reality.

Chefs cutting themselves (reality shows)

It's not just a TV thing or a drama thing. This sort of thing happens in real life too. Cuts - sometimes bad ones - and even worse injuries happen in professional kitchens all the time. Fast forwarding through the offending segments is the solution for those who can't handle the truth.

I figure if the chefs who cut themselves can handle it, why shouldn't I be able to. It helps me to deal with the inevitable cuts and burns that happen to me as a cook.

Anthony Bourdain (and Eric Riper--heads up LindaWhit) on the lines at Les Halles, No Reservations

Yeah, Les Halles and Le Bernadin are two completely different types of operations. I've been to both and I enjoyed both places were what they were. I thought Les Halles was pretty decent - not the dive the some people make it out to be and not as good as Bourdain might want you to believe either, but somewhere in between.

Top 10 Sexiest Chefs?

You're right about Brooke and Katie Lee. I also think that Sasha Perl-Raver is very attractive as well.

Asian Carp - the next "big thing" in seafood?

I hear it's a good fish for eating. So, let's try to eat it to the point of extinction. It doesn't belong to region anyways.

I think "silverfin" is a terrible name though. Gaggingly terrible. The suggestion of any sort of metal is unappetizing and "silverfin" reminds me of silverfish which are some of the grossest creatures ever to slither on the Earth. What about calling it Shanghai Bass or Jumping Jumbo Mahi?

Does Top Chef need a new host?

Padma may have an aloof attitude, but I don't mind her at all. She's a feast for the eyes and fun to watch, eye candy for the men and some of the women in the viewing audience.I'm sure there are others who have more culinary cred, but really isn't that what Colicchio is there for? I like Jacques Pepin and Sara Moulton as much as the next person, but as Top Chef host? No way. Padma fits the job description just fine.

Burrito Boyz or Chipotle?

Based on ingredients and freshness and my limited exposure to both places:

Burrito Boyz - overrated, a disappointment

Chipotle - underrated, a pleasant surprise

Thanks for the heads up.

I've only been to The Black Hoof and I was hoping to get to The Hoof Cafe this weekend. I'll do it next weekend instead.

Best pizza in Toronto?

Based on the last time I was there, I'd have to go with Pizzeria Libretto.

If you had one evening only in Toronto, where would you eat?

If I only had one evening in Toronto and wanted to spend $40-60 pp, I would definitely eat at The Black Hoof.

If I were planning on spending a bit more, I would choose Colborne Lane.
