Toaster Oven and Slow Cooker Quagmire

I just moved into a new place, but the gas isn't hooked up yet and, as a consequence, I basically have no oven or burners. I have a toaster oven with temperature settings and a slow cooker. I cook a lot, so I am tired of eating out due to the craziness of the move. I have brainstormed some ideas for what to cook, but I was wondering if anyone here had some suggestions. I like to eat a lot of greens and very little meat, and since eating out on the go this past week, I would like to get back into my normal food routine, so any ideas thereof would be much appreciated.

Best Chaat in Houston?

Savoy didn't seem to have much in the way of chaat. The food that I got wasn't great, particularly their naan and raita.

Best Chaat in Houston?

Thanks for all the replies. I agree that this thread topic is worthy of further inquiry, though it should probably me moved from the Texas board to Houston. I will definitely check out those other spots. I tried the Papdi Chaat at Chrishna and wasn't terribly impressed, also the samosas at Chrishna are not as fresh as at the next door Udipi, possibly because at the latter they cook them fresh, but they let them sit out at the former.

Best Chaat in Houston?

I am a big chaat lover and am looking for it in Houston. Incidentally, Udipi Cafe's Chaat House has the best samosas I have tried here. The pastry crust is excellent there.

Truffle Butter in Houston?

They have it at the Whole Foods on Kirby regularly and I saw it at the Costco on Richmond recently, not sure if it is still there, but it was the same brand as at Whole Foods for a better price, though it was a pack with one container of black, one white.

Skirt Steak

It was really good and it was 5.49 a pound, but I think it was a special for January.

Skirt Steak

I do a soy sauce and garlic based marinade with a little lime and olive oil. I would like to cook it on charcoal, but sadly I live in a tiny apartment and so I do the old hot cast iron skillet method instead.

Skirt Steak

I went to Pete's Fine Meats and they were having a special on what they called fajita meat this month. I inquired and unlike at other places I had gone to, they said it was skirt, inside skirt specifically. Because it was a special, i decided to give it a try. Will update with how it was.

Skirt Steak

Thank you for your comments, but I am not sure if everyone is understanding exactly what I am looking for. I understand that fajita meat is technically supposed to be skirt steak, as that is what the word fajita comes from, belt, However, many markets seem to be marketing flank steak as fajita meat, as it seems to be with the "fajita arracharra" mentioned above, which is flank steak. I am not planning on making fajitas. I just really like skirt steak as just that, a steak rare with potatoes, etc. Flank steak and skirt steak seem to be used somewhat interchangeably in what is sold as fajita meat, when they are very different cuts of meat, one from the flank of the cow and the other from the plate. Flank steak will not work for me. I am not trying to be snarky, I am just at a loss for where to purchase what I actually want.

I recently moved to Houston and I don't know where to get things here outside of where I have already tried, i.e. Whole Foods, Central Market, and Costco and I have asked the butchers at all of these locations.

Skirt Steak

Does anyone know where to get skirt steak in Houston? I have been to the Kirby Whole Foods, Central Market, and Costco. I would prefer organic and grass fed, but a lead on anywhere that even carries the cut would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Le Creuset Skillet

Anyone?

Le Creuset Skillet

I have a yellow Le Creuset Skillet that my dad gave me. It was his mothers. It has a wooden handle and is black on the inside. The research I have done online indicates that these pans are not raw cast iron inside, but are coated. However, it seems to me that it is pure cast iron inside. There is rust etc. on the inside. How should I go about restoring it for use? Is it just cast iron inside?

Pureed Soups -- How Do You Make Them More Interesting?

Pecorino fricos. Heat up a non stick skillet and pack a thin layer of the grated cheese in the center until it crisps up. I got this technique from a Melissa Clark article on yogurt gazpacho, it works well with that soup(which is delicious) and other soups that pair well with pecorino, though it can also be done with other cheeses to suit the mood.

Which foundational cookbook would you give a beginning 23 YO cook?

Ratio is the all time foundational cookbook. Learn with that and you can pretty much cook anything without too much of a problem. The way that Ruhlman explains cooking from a base of overall conceptual and technical understanding, rather than just simply saying to do x and then y is a good way to approach cooking and would give her a good foundational approach from the get go.

If I could only keep one cookbook, this would be it.

Cast Iron Set

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this set or had purchased it. It is very cheap for the pieces in it compared with lodge, etc. Thoughts?

Organic Herbs

I am new to Houston and looking to buy organic herb plants. Basil, sage, Italian flat leaf parsely, mint, lavender, and perhaps a cherry tomato plant. I have looked around, but I can't seem to find any anywhere. Help?!

Thank you. I will be sure to look on the web site for some new places to try and I will be sure to try Himalaya. Any specific vegetarian friendly restaurants you recommend?

New to Houston and Hungry

I just moved to Houston from Los Angeles. I am basically looking for restaurants to try, but I have some specific criteria that I am the most interested in, though all suggestions are welcome. I am interested in finding a good Indian place and have heard good things about Indika and Kiran's, and while I will definitely try them both, I am also looking for a more affordable place for good Indian take out. I am also looking for places that are not meat-centric. I am a recovering vegetarian and I don't eat a lot of meat, and when I do it isn't really the star of my meal, so I would like to know of some places that are vegetarian friendly/ have non-meat options. I am also into organic/local/ farm to table.

As far as area, I live in Montrose, near the intersection of Montrose and Westheimer.

I have already been to Shiva and the Hobbit and I thought both were mediocre/not that good. I also went to Little Bigs and didn't like it.
