New to Sunnyside. Need info about EVERYTHING.

The service can be spotty. And it's cash only. The food they serve is great, but the location and the ambiance leave a lot to be desired. . .

Sunnyside Salads

It's not make your own, but Aubergine Cafe has great salads. There are cheap salads with decent ingredients at The Met which are on ice near the produce. . . Quaint has tasty options but for dining in only.

May 2008 Wedding in the Hudson Valley

Thanks, everyone. After loads of research and looking, we actually ended up booking a place in Saratoga Springs, The Mansion. It was cheaper than all the places in or near NYC, even with the inclusion of ten rooms, with brunch for guests and a two night stay!

Sunnyside's "I Am Thai"

excellent siam rolls here. not so great on the pad thai front. everything else from them has been great.

they're also fast with delivery and sweet on the phone.

we order from them all the time and haven't been disappointed.

my vote is this place for delivery; dee thai for eat in.

Dee Thai - Sunnyside

for those who had the good fortune to eat at ubol's in astoria before it changed hands and went to seed, and bemoan the disappearence their fantastic mock duck, try it at dee thai. it was even better than ubol's. we also ordered a chef's special fish dish served in a coconut shell, satay app. and salad, and finished with great green tea ice cream--not the standard fare. everything we had was fresh, beautifully prepared and presented.

sleek and clean and calm with elegant decor, and a lovely staff but, best of all, everything was delicious and inexpensive.

a week or so ago, we tried them on a rainy night and had some delivery problems, and the manager came to the apartment herself to apologize drop off the food. it was so well above and beyond that it made us stop in to the restaurant.

srip is delicious but far enough to be a hassle to get to as often as we would like. dee thai has it all over srip as far as decor and presentation.

a great addition to the neighborhood--and to nyc in general!

De Mole in Sunnyside still great!

I agree on the huevos rancheros. I felt like I was getting away with something paying so little for such a fantastic breakfast. I just expect to have to pay through the nose for such deliciousness!

It would be great if you didn't have to BYOB.

Sadly, we can't go with Blue Hill as they're all booked up till the end of the year. But I will look into Crabtree (Kittle House-yes?), which I'd not come across when looking, and Harvest on Hudson, which I've come across a few times.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply.

Thanks for the endorsement. I'll keep it on the list.

Long Island City or Sunnyside wedding reception venue?

Curious! I'll check it out and let you know . . . Thanks.

Are there only 5 chowhounds? Why are Spicy Mina and Kebab Cafe empty?

I was at Spicy Mina's with a friend last night and we were wondering why it was empty. We found that part of the answer may have been in the odd service--the cook was our waiter--and the fact that even though they say they take credit cards, the cook/waiter (who was very nice and made us some excellent Saag Paneer and Lamb) had to walk to a doctor's office next door and run our credit card. Neither of us had cash and we couldn't leave a tip. There was only one other table occupied. Things like that do affect whether people come back or not. I'll just be ordering in Spicy Mina's excellent food rather than sitting in the somewhat dingy, depressing restaurant.

As for Kebab, one reason may be that going to dinner there is often a time-consuming experience. One has to be willing to make dinner a longer experience. Not a problem for people who love Ali's great food and who want to sit and savor it, but maybe a problem for people who want their food fast and want to eat it quickly. It's also on the pricey side considering the ambiance, etc. I love the mezze plate. I'll be going back for that soon, so thanks for the nudge.

Thanks for the endorsement; it sounds like a great place. Unfortunately, I called them yesterday and they're booked through December 2008. But anyone looking for info for then should know that they don't charge a crazy site fee: it's $1,500 for site and that includes chairs and set up, which makes it more reasonable (in that way) than other places with lesser food. Good news for people who are planning further ahead than we are!

n.b. While they were nice over email, when I called the woman was a bit abrupt. I told her the date we were looking for in my first correspondence and she didn't indicate that they didn't have availability until I called which was a waste of time for both of us.

time out mag says quaint restaurant in sunnyside is best in queens anyone been?

They do have a problem with getting the meat temps right at Quaint. I always order medium well when I want medium. Sometimes I end up with medium.

Quaint vs Bliss in Sunnyside

I found Acasa funky (in a bad way) and disappointing, but maybe I'm not the best one to comment on Romanian cuisine.

Quaint vs Bliss in Sunnyside

here are two sunnyside posts I found helpful when I moved to the neighborhood:

happy eating! I think TJ's Asian Bistro has fresh, tasty sushi and I really like Ariyoshi too.

Quaint vs Bliss in Sunnyside

Quaint is warmer and nicer than Bliss by miles. Quaint's chicken dish is always fantastic, and their burger is damn tasty (the secret is worcestershire sauce methinks). The desserts could use some improvement. I love it there. I've only been to Bliss once but consistently walk past it to go to warmer, less expensive, Quaint. I think Bliss needs to sort out their fussy feel; it's not getting them any business as far as I can tell.

I love De Mole--especially for great Huevos Rancheros on the weekends for bargain prices. Along with the brisket, their steak burrito is stellar.

Thanks--We have a friend who's a DJ so I think we're okay for music. But thanks for the offer!

Thai Food in Sunnyside?

Yes--I agree. We've been really happy with the food we've ordered from *I am Thai*, especially the Siam rolls, the Panang Curry, and the Spicy noodles. They also serve a simple, delicious ginger soup that I highly recommend. The Pad Thai was not good when I had it, but I may try again since everything else has been so tasty.

Also: they're really nice when they answer the phone!

Long Island City or Sunnyside wedding reception venue?

Sorry all: I should have said that I know where we would like to eat (Quaint in Sunnyside), but I'm looking for a place for dancing/drinks afterwards. There will only be 50 or so of us. If we can't find this, we may just look for places on the Hudson.
