Un-crowded weekday lunch in Mile-End/ Plateau

Oh, I second that, great food. But it is packed between 12-1, so come in before noon or call and reserve (not sure if they do that).

Un-crowded weekday lunch in Mile-End/ Plateau

Your experience at Nouveau Palais was normal, it's not packed at lunch during the week. May be a little cramped for 3 mothers, since it's only booths, but you've been so you can decide.

What does Montreal have to offer? June 30 - July 3

I actually looked into this last year, so here's what I remember: Lemeac serves their brunch menu from the opening (10h30-11h?). They only serve the regular menu from 12h30 or 1, I can't remember.

For L'express, I'm surprised you got a brunch menu, as I was told they don't have a brunch menu, and when we went on a Saturday for lunch, it was the regular menu(which was okay, that's what we wanted and why we went there, because it was one of the few places we found that had a regular menu at lunchtime on a Saturday). I believe if you go early in the morning (breakfast time, not brunch time), they will have a breakfast menu, but that may be only during the week

Dinner in Montreal this Sunday

There have been a few negative reviews of La Salle à Manger (but much more positive reviews), but I believe it is still a good option.

Other choices not too far from Mont-Royal:

Pintxo (Very good Basque tapas place),

Au Pied de Cochon is opened on Sunday, but good luck getting reservations this short notice, unless you are flexible in your time, or very lucky.

Bistro Cocagne (not especially innovative, more classical bistro fare, but pretty good)

Le comptoir Vin et Charcuterie (innovative small plates at great prices. Awesome inexpensive wine list. Maybe not that special and pretty boisterous)

Restaurant Closings in 2012

Well, as long as the St-Laurent location keeps going. I went there for lunch recently and really liked it, it would make for an unexpensive place for our group dinners. But the one time I passed in the evening, it looked almost empty, not much of an atmosphere...

Don't forget that with a lot of the subventions for the Cité du Multimédia coming to an end, a lot of companies moved out of that area, so it's possible traffic was down, if only slightly. But they are such in the middle of nowhere, they needed the business traffic, no tourist wander there and not many residents of the area either.

I also saw the Lola Rosa listed opening last night, I don't remember exactly what was written on the window, but it will be a vegetarian place.

Looking for a Byob for large group

How good is bitoque? That menu seems interesting, especially for a BYO, and I know they are fairly big. I seem to recall hearing some good and some bad. Do you know if they do 2 services on Friday-Saturday?

I agree about the food at Cafe Prague...as for the coffee, they charge $2.50 for an allongé with warmed milk, which is pretty standard, it's what they charged me at Veritas when I worded in the old port. I do agree about the americano being pricy however, maybe a mistake? Anyways, I only recommed it for coffee, not the food and it's your only chance for a good coffee west of Parc and North of Saint-Viateur.

Dining suggestions for Sunday & Monday in Montreal

Yes, thanks, and i'm surprised by how many choices there are. I knew of 3-4 reliable choices, but there are WAY more!

Where to eat with clients and vendors...

Thanks for the info, I'll go give them a shot for weekday lunch.

Raza to also become BYOB

Starting Thursday May 24, Raza will become BYO:

For good coffee, there's only really Café Prague. Now Patisseries, that the area is saturated with, and good ones. I'd enjoy a café with more of a food centric menu for lunch, outside of getting sandwiches at the said patisseries, not many food options for lunch. But obviously, with only 3 tables, I'm not getting that...

Where is the best West African restaurant in Montreal?

Haven't tried it, but there is Afrodiziac (restaurantafrodiziac.com) on Jean-Talon near l'Acadie. Not sure if it's what you're looking for, not knowledgeable on African cuisine but considering what little African restaurants we have in Mtl, I might as well suggest it. Comments and review were pretty good, but all date back a few years. If you search this board, you'll see I almost went once, but the lady ended up cancelling for our group because there was a snowstorn. Definitely a family place.

Urgent! Warm, cozy, fish-friendly, little bit upscale restaurant needed in Plateau! Ambience a must.

My first thought was also La Salle a Manger.

Possible venues/rests for baby shower (10-15 gals)

They were? I've yet to see anything on them, I'm still waiting for feedback on Ferraro.

Montreal Bachelor Party - Memorial Day Weekend 2012

Yes, as you'll read everywhere on this board, if you're coming in from NY, forget about getting steak. While you may get a good steak, I'm sure it won't beat the best you've had home. However, if 13 guys gotta have steak, 13 guys gotta have steak.

Yes, try Joe Beef and APDC, but I doubt they'll be able to accomodate you.

Once that fails, La Salle a Manger should fit what you have in mind for Friday or Sunday and have big size tables.

Restaurant Communion

I went once for dinner with a large group, and we had a special menu, so I can't comment on the menu and pricing, we had a prix fix for the group. Food was pretty good. I'm trying to remember, it was back in January: none of us were wowed, but we had a good meal. Would not mind returning again, if circonstances called for it. Must be nice in the summer with the terrasse.

Fun birthday dinner (BYOW)+dessert

BYO for students and on a budget: Le Bambou bleu, a Vietnamese on St-Denis near Duluth is pretty decent. La Selva (peruvian). Khyber Pass (Afghan) is closer to 20$-25$. Same for Au coin berbère (couscous).

For desserts, Rockaberry fits your criteria and is in the area. Or you can always walk to a Juliette & Chocolat and stand in line (crazy, never got that).

Free Cone Day coming, but looks like Place-Jacques cartier location is closed

Thanks for the info, looks like this year may be the first time I miss it in a long time. Why do they keep changing the dates around? It's as if they don't want people to come. Either do a big PR event and build it up (by having a fixed date and talking about it), or don't do anything.

Em Café: new resto-café at Park/Bernard

Don't mean to be thread jacking, but I have to ask, what was the disatisfaction about Lafayette? I've kept ordering from there after the renos, and I'm still satisfied. In fact, I find their pikilia better now than before. Only thing I dislike is that twice we tried booking a table on saturday afternoon for the evening, and they said they were full, whereas they used to be our go-to choice for Saturday night without reservations.

And to compensate for my change of topic, EM Café is okay, good food, nothing special at all food-wise, but a nice space to hang out. But is is very casual, really more of a ''cafe'' in the sense sandwiches/soups/salads/baked goods. They do have breakfasts/brunches, and I know they have a plat du jour during the week, but I've never had it. I did not know about the BYO, so maybe they made other changes to the menu to go with it. I'll have to try it again.

Come on, I've had it once, and it's not great, but I've had WAY worst ''chinese food''. Just starting with the buffet I used to go to when I was a kid, but even since. Unless they have a large variance between branches, and the one you ate at was way worst than mine.

Restaurant Closings in 2012

La Moulerie on Bernard will change name to Murphy Boire et Manger. They are papered up this morning, but just half the restaurant, the corner half and terrasse will remain opened, based on this I found online:
http://www.bardagi.com/blog/2012/03/du-changement-sur-la-rue-bernard-2/#more-2874

Apparently, it stays in the family, with the sons taking over. Menu will change.

Le P'tit Plateau

Yeah, the same as ever, one of the best BYOs out there, and the best for your money, but still doing that very unfortunate two service thing Friday/Saturday. If it wasn't for that, I'd be there all the time. Oh, well, what are you gonna do.

Great coffee for Good Friday

Not by heart, as they are the ones with the largest variety amongst the 3rd wave coffee shops in Mtl. I know they stock Parallel 49, Intelligentia, Counter, of course the Café St-Henri coffees (same owner), and a few more I don't remember.

Great coffee for Good Friday

I bet most of them will be open. I know In Gamba (on Parc) has been opened in the past.

Is it possible to eat well downtown?

...on a moderate budget?

Some friends and I are planning a trip to Chicago this summer, partly to celebrate our 30th birthdays, but also because none of us have never been to Chicago. So we will be doing a lot of the touristy stuff for sure. We were thinking of renting something downtown, to be able to walk as much as possible, and take public transportation when necessary. However, we also enjoy good food and drinks, and at least at night, we’d like to be able to have some good supper options. Are there some good restaurants in downtown Chicago that are not tourist traps/high end? We have a decent budget, mod-prices, but still like to get some value.

I’m not necessarily looking for a long list of options at this points, just whether this is manageable, OR we should just get lodgings in a neighborhood like Lincoln Park, do our visiting during the day, then come back and have supper closer to our lodging (I’m saying lodging because there will be 6 of us, so we were thinking of renting something, so no hotel)

Thanks in advance!

Restaurant Ethan in Chinatown

Just to clarify, that's in the old Sin Sun Lung location, right?

Julieta Cuisine Latine

Well, I was too, but reading the Voir review I got the feeling they might have changed their mind and forgone the BYO option. Towards the end, the review says: ''La liste des vins est minimaliste, mais on nous le promet, ça va s’étoffer!'' If the restaurant is saying they'll improve the wine list, doesn't look like they are waiting on their BYO license. Just an impression, I may very well be wrong.
