Need Current Info re: Best Crabcake
Didn't mean to offend. We love Camden Yards- it's a beautiful park.
We don't eat the crabcakes there, though. Boog's BBQ and Yuengling, all the way!
Need Current Info re: Best Crabcake
Lifelong New Englander here.... Maryland crabs are MUCH better than our local ones. Different species. We have the jonah or pinky toe, not the big beautiful blues.
When we visit Fenway South, we love to dig into either steamed crabs with Old Bay or crabcakes. Add a pitcher of Yuengling or Natty Boh and I'm a happy camper.
Of course, 2 lobster rolls and a Keith's Ale are good, too.
Different places, different tastes.
Faidley's is a favorite and worth the experience.
Sweet tooth is fading as I age?
My elderly mother lives with us. For as long as I can remember (I'm 50), Mum has not had much of a sweet tooth. Within the past 5 years or so, she has developed an insatiable sweet tooth. It's funny, really. She's always had very good teeth and at her last dental visit, actually had to have a cavity filled! Not to mention the small fortune we now spend on chocolate, pastries and Klondike bars....
Reminder Polcari's Coffee North End - Great Old Fashioned Dry Goods
Yup. Polcari's is the first stop in the North End for us every visit.
Great shop kitty, too!
Far from Perfect
I haven't been a fan of Linda Bean's since she ran for Congress, back in the mid 80s. (Think Sarah Palin prototype) and I doubt I'd like her lobster roll.
However, if she succeeds in reviving the lobster processing industry in the state, I think that would be beneficial.
Va. chains
Dairy-Rite and the Route 11 chip factory were already on the list!!
Sometimes a quick beverage and snack is all that's needed and chains fulfill that requirement.
Thanks, everyone!
Va. chains
We're headed to the Shenandoah Valley this fall. We generally eschew chains, but are curious as which chains operate in that area. We're from New England, so while we do have BK, Mickey D's and some others, there are some major and minor chains that might be worth trying.
Suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
"Only in Canada" food items: add to the list
I came here to mention Mackintosh toffee. So sorry to hear it has changed. The last time I had some was about 5 years ago and, like Jlhinwa, was surprised I never lost a tooth... I never won anything on the various contests which is just as well since claiming a prize from the US would have been a PITA!
Critique my quick trip to downeast Maine, and I need help on the way, especially late night in Manchester!
Sorry, I meant to add that Finelli's is in Ellsworth. Pat's Pizza is a local chain and is absolutely awesome if you're a drunken UM student.
Do not eat at Governors' under pain of ptomaine!
Harraseeket Lobster is good.
Fin's and Cleonice are your best bets this time of year in Ellsworth.

The Red Arrow Diner in downtown Manchester NH is open 24 hours ( I believe) and while not the greatest food around has some pretty good tourtiere and baked goods. Think local color.
Red's Eats is in Wiscasset and worth the detour off of I95. There will probably be a line, but it is worth it.
You're a bit early for some of the restaurants Down East, but Finelli's pizza is good.

Food that Most People Love and You Don't...
I know I'm in the minority with this. I really don't care for garlic. I feel a little ( a very little) goes a LONG way and sadly, many folks overuse and overcook it....
one of the very few foods that make me actively gag.
How Does Your Ancestry/Background and Home Country's Background Affect Your Cooking/Eating?
Great topic. Thanks ,everyone, for the stories...
I'm Yankee (birth, breeding and natural inclination) and my ancestry is British (English, Scots- Irish) and German. With that heritage, I LOVE beer, preferring British ales to German lagers..
I like peasant food, whether it's steak and mushroom pie, chimichangas, tourtiere, baked beans, ribollita or pho.
My attitude towards immigration is simple: if you're willing to obey our laws and have an interesting cuisine- Welcome!
How Many Oysters?
OK, so my normal 2-3 dozen isn't excessive....
Passadumkeag, they'll probably be Malpeques (I hope) or Island Creeks. I'm not partial to southern ones, so I'll have to see what's available. I haven't seen Taunton Bays here north of Boston yet but that's a good excuse to visit Maine later this year.
Thanks for the input, everyone!
How Many Oysters?
OK, so I'm thinking when I go out later this month for my birthday dinner, I may try to consume my age in raw oysters. I'm over 12. Naturally, I won't eat until I'm ill, but ,out of curiousity, what's the most oysters eaten at one sitting by Chowhounders? 'Fess up, folks and be honest.
I like mine with fresh ground black pepper and Guinness to wash them down. What's your pleasure?
Main Street, Our Town, Ellsworth, Maine.
Ayuh, the days of the Jasper's GOOD food cheap are gone by the wayside. We won't be travelling Down East too much anymore, but it's always good to hear local favorites are doing well.
Is Wasses in Belfast still there?
What Passes for BBQ Chicken in the Merrimack Valley--very strange indeed!
*sigh* No, that is indeed what folks here call barbecue chicken or "chicken barbs". Also, "veal on a heel" is, in fact, a type of chicken parm sandwich.
I've lived in this area nearly twenty years now and still shake my head over that one...
Raw Oysters in Maine, Early June...?
I can't remember the name of the restaurant, but in Ellsworth there was a place on the Union River just outside of downtown that had excellent oysters. It's a relatively new place- good basic seafood, decor is lodgish and prices not too bad.
I'm a big fan fan of Malpeques, but had some delicious local Taunton Bay oysters.
Things I ate/drank in college that I will never eat again
UMaine here! We called them 'Purple Jesus', too. The combo of Treasure Island Rum (or Poland Spring Gin- the pride of Lewiston) and Zarex and fruit cocktail liberated from the cafe...
It's amazing I lived through it....

Downeast Maine - What's still open after Columbus Day?
These days Blue Bird Ranch is definitely better than Helen's. Joshy's has downhill rapidly- stick to the ice cream and maybe the burgers.
Do you mean Country Charm? I think they are open all year but odd hours.
When I drove by last week, Chester Pike's was open, but had a for sale sign- Passadumkeag will know what's up. he can also tell you for sure about Jordans and Ruth and Wimpy's.
Yes, you should have a passport to visit Campobello. I believe they are required and the border folks are cracking down.
Down East Maine recs needed (Machias/Jonesport/Milbridge)
nthing Chester Pike's, Country Charm and the Galley. Good choices in an area of slim pickins'.
best blueberry pie in Maine??
IMHO, Helen's is nowhere near as good as it used to be. In Machias, things have generally gone downhill since their daughter and spouse took over a few years ago.
I haven't been to Bluebird Ranch in a while, so I can't say, but in the past they have been good. My mother is especially fond of the German chocolate cake.
Maine Eats
Just returned from a quick trip Down East and we ate ate at a few old favorites and tried a new place.
Union River Lobster Pot in Ellsworth was the new place. We loved it. Good food, good atmosphere. Fish chowder was excellent. We'll go back for the shore dinner and blueberry pie.
Walnut creme pie at Moody's Diner is as good as it ever was.
We waited in line 20 minutes for a lobster roll at Red's Eats. It's worth it. IMHO, still the best. Someday, I'll try the good looking fish n'chips and Round Top ice cream. Really, I will.
Young's in Belfast has a good lobster roll with plenty of fresh meat, but is non-traditional in that they use a seeded hamburger bun (Oh, the horror!)
Chokecherries
Chokecherry jam and liqueur are both delicious! I remember my Mum making both. She also used to make a sauce similar to cranberry sauce with them. Not too sweet, just tangy.
If a person likes their steak "well done" does it really matter what grade of beef the steak is?
Reading through the comments, I am wondering whether one of the issues involved of well-done vs. rare is frankly, the skill of the chef involved. I'm not criticizing anyone or want to start a flame war, but perhaps folks who like it rare don't mind it being undercooked a tad, while others who might prefer meat a bit overcooked don't get it that way.
If a person likes their steak "well done" does it really matter what grade of beef the steak is?
I think it does. Good quality meat or produce or shellfish or anything will stand out.
Method of preparation can bring out the best or worst in any food.
If a person likes their steak "well done" does it really matter what grade of beef the steak is?
Yes, I know, but , most people refer to the substance as 'blood'.
There's a difference between knowledge and pedantry...
If a person likes their steak "well done" does it really matter what grade of beef the steak is?
I like my meat done medium well, with just a hint of pink. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to get one cooked that way. Most chefs seem to think to think that unless meat is raw and dripping blood, it's overcooked.
I guess I'm just an uncouth peasant.
