Bodega Bay: Fishetarian Fish Market, Fisherman’s Cove Deli & Bait, Chowder Day

Thanks. Google didn't find that website for me.

That Salmon Bisque is talking to me. Also, their online menu doesn't mention Clam Chowder.

I haven't been able to find any information about Fisherman's Cove. Do you know when they're open?

I missed Island Style deli completely. I guess that shows now often I get to Bodega Bay. I'll try to do better...

Is there seating at Fishetarian?

Is it located where Google Maps shows 599 Highway 1 South Bodega Bay, CA? That is, a very short distance south of North Harbour Way.

Did it take the place of Dee's Bayside Deli (if so, good riddance)?

bouchon v. bistro jeanty v. bistro don geovanni (and other trip itinerary dilemmas)

I consider the Ahwahnee a must-see place in Yosemite, with drinks on the patio and dinner in the dining room a one-off experience. The food varies over the years with the current chef, but eating there is really for the experience of dinner in this grand hotel from another era. If you don't eat there, at least have drinks on the patio.

Green Chile Kitchen...good New Mexican cuisine. [San Francisco]

I didn't live in New Mexico. I went there (Grants) for business a few times back in the late 70s and spent a week in Santa Fe in the early 90s. I remember having stand-alone (no chili and cheese on top) stuffed sopapillas both times and loving them. But if you say that smothered in chile and cheese is the norm, who am I to argue :-)

Forgot to mention the outside deck. The best views of course are from there.

I'll enter a dissent about the awesomeness of the food at Copita. I had a lunch there last year and I thought the food was not that great. Pretty boring, really, for Mexican food. Other people I know feel the same.

I also say the Trident for what the OP wants. I've been there in its new incarnation and the food was quite good, the view the best possible. To say nothing of the 60s-70s history of the place :-)

Cafe Europe (Santa Rosa)

This afternoon I stumbled upon Cafe Europe, located in a strip mall in the outskirts of Santa Rosa on Hwy 12 toward Sonoma Valley. Judging from one lunch of smoked bratwurst and apple strudel (house made), this place is serious about the quality of their European and German food. Take a look at the photos of those items and know that they were as good as they look. The sauerkraut and red cabbage were on the milder side, and the apple strudel was less sweet than is the norm (a good thing to me). I also noticed that they have Sauerbraten on the dinner menu, described in a way that says that they do it the "right" way which is pretty much impossible to find in this area. I find no mention here about this place; it definitely deserves a try for anyone with a taste for German food.

Is it just me or is it rather difficult to find good steak in the Bay Area?

As I read the Prather Ranch site, all their beef is finished on grain (but no corn).

A bit of butter in the end seems very different from resting in a bath of melted butter.

<he lets the steak rest afterward in a bath of melted butter<

I find that hilarious. Since when does a good steak need to rest in a bath of melted butter.

That's correct, although I consider it Sonoma. It's on Hwy 12 as you leave Sonoma going north, still in the area of businesses.

I second El Molino Central (town of Sonoma) for great Mexican in a very no-frills setting. Also Fremont Diner (just outside the town of Sonoma) for excellent "American" food in a diner setting, with outside tables near a vineyard.

Kiss of Death for La Boulange

I've stopped going to La Boulangerie since two very forgettable visits to the in Mill Valley (Strawberry) one last Fall. The first, I had a chocolate croissant that was probably the worst croissant I've ever had in my life. I ate the chocolate off the bottom layer and threw away the rest. The second was a panini (can't remember which one now) that was a shadow of its former self; looked good but "where's the beef' as the old commercial said. That's enough for me to strike them off my list.

Another thumbs up for the Yucatan Cochinita Pork sandwich. It was even better this time; less burger-like and more pulled-pork-like. Same very good quinoa salad and friendly service. I just can't get past this item on the menu when I go there.

Sausalito: Dive into Davey Jones Deli for creative, 90% organic sandwiches - vegans and meat-o-philes equally welcome

It's worth an update a year later. I stopped in today late in the afternoon and got one of their pre-made sandwiches (also good for crowded lunch time to avoid a wait). They're smaller and cost less, but big enough for me. I had the Holiday ($6.50), with many ingredients that I'm going to list here so you can see an example of what they do - Turkey, Goat Cheddar, Almonds, Arugula, Cranberry Compote, Pickle, Pepperoncini, Red Onion, Roast Garlic, Red Pepper Sauce, Mustard & Mayo, Fresh Lemon, Tomato, Cilantro, & Sesame Salt on Dutch Crunch Roll. Note that they roast their own turkey. Yes, it was very good.

Farm House Local (Larkspur)

Another lunch a couple of weeks later, this time a panini of Diestel Ham, Fresh Celery Root, Crescenza Cheese and Roasted Pepper Mayonnaise with a green salad ($9, up from $8 when they opened). It was excellent, with all the ingredients coming together to make it one of those "greater than the sum or the parts" things. There was more ham in the panini than is obvious in the photo; I should have also taken a shot when it was half eaten but was too busy eating it :-)

They are now serving breakfast Monday-Saturday and their hours are Tue-Sat 7:00 am - 4:00 pm, Sunday Brunch 10:00 am - 3:00 pm.

Sausalito Bakery & Cafe - way better then it needs to be

Another update a year after the last one. More great frittata, this time with focaccia instead of slices of baguette and of course with somewhat different vegetables because he changes it often. And another beautiful display platter of vegetables. Another table was being served their breakfast and everything looked great. The quality never seems to slip in this place. If you're ever near Sausalito and want a very good casual breakfast or lunch, check this place out.

Huarache Loco Larkspur

I had lunch there again today and had the Mole El Huarache Loco ($10) and then a Flan ($4). Everything was excellent, including the beans and rice which I generally don't eat, and also the thick corn tortillas. Portion size was good, not huge on rice and beans like in many places. Quality over quantity, but definitely enough food. Flan was also excellent. This is a very good place.

Photos over a few visits.

Farm House Local (Larkspur)

I had lunch there again today, having the Cavatappi Pasta with Calamari, Merguez Sausage, Rainbow Chard and House Tomato Sauce ($13) and Crème Brulee with Blueberries ($6). The pasta and other ingredients were very flavorful, with the calamari providing texture instead of flavor (the chef intended that). The crème brulee was another excellent dessert, about as good as this dish could get. You really need to check this place out.

See a closeup of the calamari tentacles :-)

Belcampo - Larkspur

Today I had lunch at Belcampo. I had the Smoked Pork Loin & Honey-Mustard ($13). It was a plate with what seemed to me to be pan-fried thin slices of pork with the honey mustard sauce, and a side salad of ingredients that I can't name (but you may recognize from the photo). It all looked great, but it just didn't work for me. The sauce was too sweet, the pork didn't have much flavor (maybe because of the sauce), the slices were somewhat tough, and the salad didn't have much flavor. I'm not giving up on the place; I think they're trying to do a good thing and others may well have liked that item much more than I did. Try the place for yourself and see what you think.

Belcampo - Larkspur

I stopped into Belcampo today, but not at a time for me to eat so I just looked around. I saw some good sodas in the cooler, including Abita Root Beer. I'll definitely have lunch there sometime soon. In case anyone isn't clear where it is, it's in Larkspur Landing, now officially named Marin County Mart but I don't know anyone who calls it that.

A few photos (no food yet).

HEARTBROKEN, Fog City to close

<In 1975, there was only one restaurant in the area, a funky cavernous place called Mildred Pierce's where Fog City now sits.<

My memory of it is from before that time when it was a mediocre hofbrau-type place under another name but always with very good fresh roasted turkey.

What time frame was that for you at Mildred's? It was a different time from when I was there (no dirt and tombstone and I think the name was not "Mildred's").

> Anyone remember when this was Mildred's? They had great turkey sandwiches.<

Was the name Mildred's? I remember it because a friend had his business across the street in the late 60s-early 70s. The owner and cook was a man whose name I can't remember, but would remember if I heard it. He always roasted a turkey, hence the great fresh-carved turkey sandwiches. The rest of the food was forgettable.

Anyone been to Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael?

A friend and I went for dinner last night (my first time). I was very impressed by the place itself. Modern but comfortable, a "buzz" from the people there but not overly noisy at all, a varied crowd, and lots of space between tables; I do mean lots, amazing is this day of mostly-crowded-together tables. Friend had the rotisserie chicken and said it was fine I had the penne with lamb ragu, again quite fine if a bit bland for my taste. Service couldn't have been better. I'm looking forward to going back, next time with a camera along.
