The Best Chinese in LA

Why doesn't Sam Woo BBQ Monterey Park ever get mentioned.
I could eat there everyday.

Kalua Pork

Sounds so authentic. Friend of mine's in-laws make kalua pork commercially in Oahu in a bunch of cinder block pits in the ground.

Liquid Smoke is made from real smoke.

If you're desperate I've seen and had this Ono Ono Kalua pork on mainland and it's alright.

Favorite Food gifts (omiyage) to bring home from Oahu

We always stop at the Costco near the airport and can find things for ourselves and family back home. Stuff like Kona coffee, they have your multi-caramac packages you name it. I could stuff a whole suitcase with the selection of Portuguese sasuage they carry.
One friend always brings us mochi filled with peanut butter, it's a semi-famous kind of place.

Disney Cruise port stop - dinner eats near Pier 35 w 2 kids under 5yo?

Maybe you should check with the kids....my friend took his grandkids on the DIsney a couple weeks ago to the Mexican Riviera and they were pretty sad when they had to leave the ship for good.

Getting desperate for 50's Chinese food!

Stopped by PK's this afternoon and noticed a small sign next to the door saying they started business in 1946.

Great dates?

Don't know if Costco still carries them, but I bought a 48 oz. tub of Hadley's deglet noor dates for like $5.99.

Check the price they charge at Hadley's.

Splash Cafe also has a location in SLO and their bakery goods are excellent.
You can also get Splash Cafe frozen clam chowder to go at the Costco in SLO.

I absolutely hate that, it is nothing short of sexual harasment.

Hawaiian Toast from Hong Kong airport...circa 1985?

Love that shrimp toast.
Have an uncle that makes it all the time when we go for dinner. He worked in one of those Cantonese restaurants back in the 50's when it was a popular appetizer.

Touched by a Waitress

It can work both ways...
My weekly golf club is made up mostly of old retired guys and they're always hugging and snuggling the waitress that takes care of our group. I'm 20 years younger than these guys and don't do the hugging routine with the waitress.
Maybe it's an old guy thing.

Every now and then I like some salsa with my eggs.
Now isn't salsa a "condiment"?
Not according to some hotel restaurants...they charge extra and treat salsa like it's a side order.

Was it ever called "Cup O' Noodles" or has it always been "Cup Noodles"?

Believe the name change occurred in 1993.

Chicken Fried Steak

Steak Milanesa (dipped in bread crumbs) seems to be what places pass off as chicken fried steak.
A chicken fried steak is tenderized round steak dredged through seasoned flour then deep fried.
Why can't places seem to get it right?

What are your favorite dives and cheap eats WORTH THE DRIVE?

Stopped by the Donut Man today and complained to the kid who sold me the strawberry donut a couple weeks ago. He apologized and said the strawberries that week were picked early because of the rain and weather. I bought another one today ($2.90) and the strawberries were ripe.
My new thing there is the bear claw ($1.90), truly a work of art and the size of a real bears claw.

Hawaiian Plate Lunch

At Bruddah's they use spaghetti not macaroni for the mac salad. Don't know what you mean by "dressing", they should be using Best Foods Mayo.

Agree, Bruddah's for plate lunches and the best loco moco in town.

Pressed Almond Duck

Nothing has changed since your visit to Paul's Kitchen 4 years ago and the "Almond Duck" is the same as you had then and as I described now. That's how they've served it for 50+ years.

No need to hear your disappointment again.
