Canton Palace - Somerville

A new cantonese restaurant has opened in downtown Somerville, and they have dim sum! Husband went yesterday and reported back that the dim sum was good (while not as good as Hong Kong, still, good enough so that we won't have to drive to Edison, NYC, etc.) and worth going back in the very near future. I'm hoping to personally try it some time in the next week or so (maybe for dinner).

For reference, for 2 people who ordered 8 items (har gow, lotus leaf wrapped sticky rice, beef ribs, etc.), the cost for their dim sum lunch was about $25.

Address of the restaurant is 216 Main St.

@famdoc - no, haven't tried Mei-Mei before. We do cantonese food more in the Edison area, but may have to try Mei-Mei. For Shanghainese, we've been going to Hong Fu in Highland Park quite frequently.

We went about a month or so ago as a family for dinner on a weekend. To be transparent, we are Chinese and having looked at their menu online and seeing a small, traditional chinese menu that was posted, we went there specifically to try some of those dishes and hoping they would be good since the area doesn't have many authentic chinese restaurants.

The atmosphere and decor is really beautiful. The food though was only "meh". We had chinese meatballs (literal translation of the dish from chinese is Lion's Head), the tea smoked duck, the sauteed stringbeans, salt and pepper shrimp, and scallion pancakes. The only thing that was really good was the stringbean dish. Everything else, while certainly edible, was only ok and not very memorable.

The worst part was the sal and pepper shrimp (jiao yan xia for those who know the dish's chinese/pinyin name). The shrimp are served with tortilla chips and no spiced salt (the jiao yan part). When we asked for it, it took them a while to find it, and only after a detailed explanation of what we were looking for.

A return trip for lunch for the shrimp days later resulted in an utter fail. The waiter and kitchen staff were unable to produce the spiced salt and so the dish was essentially just fried shrimp.

The prices are relatively high for the size and types of dishes. We won't be going back...

Poznan, Poland

Thanks for the review. Now we'll definitely have to try it when we're there (plus we're staying at the hotel)!

Poznan, Poland

I am headed to Poznan myself for the first time later this month. So, while I can't speak from firsthand experience, I was told by a local that Brovaria in the Stary Rynek is good and plus they have their own brews.

Ground Beef

We've been buying all kinds of meats (beef, pork, poultry ...), including ground beef, directly from a small, local(ish) farm called Simply Grazin'. They now have 2 stores called Mallery's Grazin Meats (http://www.mallerysgrazinmeats.com/), 1 in Skillman and the other in Hillsborough. Everything is organic so expect it to be a little pricier than regular, store-bought meat, but the quality is second to none.

New Artisan Bakery and Pastry Shop in Clinton

I haven't been to Christie's yet, but I have had their crumb cake a few times when others have brought it to meetings/get togethers. I happen to love crumb cakes and do like their's as it has a lot of the crumb part vs the cake.

Cafe Emilia - Bridgewater NJ

I haven't been there in a while, but used to go once in a while with coworkers since it's close to where my office used to be and we often were there for business reasons (expensed lunches and dinners). While the food was always good, the prices, in my opinion, were generally a bit higher than expected. Service has generally been pretty good too.

Restaurants near Warren, NJ?

Right on route 22 westbound in Green Brook is Dynasty. It's pricey for authentic Cantonese food, but they have dim sum (with carts), lots of typical Cantonese seafood, etc.

Around this area, it's the best and biggest for Cantonese Chinese.

Hunan Tea Garden in Warren has a few items that are authentic and good. One that the family and I like is the beef and soup noodles.

Note: I'm Chinese so there are many menu items at both of these restaurants I would never order my reco is only based on what me and my family would and have ordered over the past 10-20 years at these 2 places.

Young families' get together

Hi,
I'm looking for suggestions of where to go for an early dinner (4 or 5 pm) ona Saturday with several families that all have toddlers & babies. Anywhere that's within an hour's drive of Staten Island and Bridgewater. Any ideas?

I was thinking of maybe Green knoll Grille only because they have an outdoor play area so the kids could have somewhere to be, not just at the table while the adults are catching up(college buddies who haven't gotten together in a while).

Thanks!

Shang Hai Noodle House Edison ( website www.shanghaibun.com)

Agree that this is a good place for a pretty inexpensive but satisfying meal. Noodles are really good for the most part.

Baguette Delite/Banh mi viet in Edison.

Based on reco's here from fellow CH'ers, the family & I went here this afternoon. Very tasty banh mi sandwiches. A popular little place with friendly service. Some bars tools and 1 long counter by the front window, and 4 or 5 tables that seat either 2 or 4, that's it. Banh mi run about $5 or so, pho about $7 or $8, so very affordable.

We tried several items, but the BBQ pork banh mi really stood out.

Although we live over a half hour away, you can bet that this will be a place we'll return to in the not too distant future.

Organic Valley Milk - Where to Find Gallon Size

Thanks! I just went to the Kings in Whitehouse Station today, but they only have the 96 oz jugs, not the 128 oz ones. I'll try Bedminster next.

Organic Valley Milk - Where to Find Gallon Size

Hi,
I just came by a whole slew of coupons for free Organic Valley milk - but only for the gallon size. Anyone know where I can find this in central NJ? I seem to be able to easily find 1/2 gallon cartons of OV milk, but not the 1 gallon jugs.

Any help would be appreciated - thanks!

Looking for a Restaurant in Central and Northern NJ for a Baby Shower...Please help

Try Pheasant's Landing in Hillsborough.
We had a private event there for about 20 people, but there was room for many more (easily 50-100 people). Food was good - some nice European foods (owner is from central Europe) - well-liked by all. And at decent prices with a nice atmosphere (including outdoor space available).

Forno's of Spain in Newark

Our family likes Fornos so that's become our go-to place when we're jonesing for some good spanish food, even though it's about an hour's drive. My personal favorite is the Paella Marinera (seafood paella) and the Changurro - the scallops and crab meat broiled in the scallop shell. Enjoy when you go!

Need a romantic spot for anniversary dinner in Central NJ

We love going to The Pluckemin Inn for special occasions. The Bernards Inn would be another good choice.

Stoney Brook Grille, Branchburg, NJ?

Food is ok - I wasn't really wowed (but not disappointed either), but the inside of the restaurant is nice (renovated/updated from when it was New Orleans Restaurant). When I went, service was painfully slow though, so I really haven't been back since I usually go w/ my family which includes my toddler daughter.

Stefano's Wood Burning Pizza and Tratoria Branchburg, NJ - meh

Definitely agree with dawnj's assessment of Stefano's. I went there the first week it opened and encountered many problems - no highchairs (so instead of eating in, I ordered take out just so I could try their food), margherita pizza was made with regular shredded mozzarella instead of fresh and was very salty, and the fried calamari was very salty as well. I don't plan on ever returning there, despite living nearby. Many better options within a 15 minute drive!

Where can I find Soup Dumplings?

There's a Shanghainese restaurant in Highland Park called Hong Fu that has pretty good soup dumplings/XLB/steamed juicy buns. Here's their menu online in both chinese & english: http://chinesenj.com/Restaurant:HongF...

Restaurant is at 239 Route 27 with a small parking lot and street-side parking too.

Any Suggested Restaurants Approximately Halfway Between Clinton and Milburn

A second Origin Thai in Basking Ridge and Silk Road in Warren. Both are really wonderful with Silk Road edging out Origin Thai a little bit just based on the friendlier, warmer service.

Good Eats in Paramus

Just went to Mantra this weekend and the food was delicious! Good kofta, chicken makhani (butter chicken), vegetable samosas, rasmalai - I can just go on and on. Not a very large restaurant, but very nice. It's right on Route 4 in the same shopping center as the Macy's Furniture Gallery and Thomasville.

small engagement/bridal shower room central nj

The Pluckemin Inn (Bedminster) is a wonderful place to have a small party as they have a great private space (not sure how big your "small" group is). Food is very good and for private parties, they can work with you on the menu. This is our go-to place for small family get togethers/events (like my dad's 60th bday!).

Suggestions needed forWedding Reception/Banquet Hall Sites in Somerset or Hunterdon County NJ?

Pheasant's Landing in Hillsborough is quite nice. We just had an event there (although not a wedding) and it was great - good food, nice place, pretty lawn area for pictures, etc. I know they definitely do weddings, so you should give them a call (ask for Heinz Keller). www.pheasantslanding.com
