Catering suggestions in the SFV?
I'm hosting a small (10-15 person) baby shower for a good friend of mine. I wanted to use Auntie Em, but I'm just concerned about it sitting too long and deliver all the way to beautiful...Van Nuys. Any suggestions? I'm not sure what my budget is because I'm splitting it with someone. So if you can also give me an idea of the costs with your recommendations, that would be helpful also.
Moving to offices downtown
My friend, who's meal is lunch, is really disappointed to move from the westside to downtown offices. He's really upset to have to go and find new places to eat during lunch. He's not that adventerous with eating. He pretty much needs a
1. Taco (durados) place
2. Pizza spot
3. BBQ joint
As examples of the his favorites for these are Taqueria Chiuahua (he's been at least three times a week since they opened up again), Lamonica's or Johnny's NY for Pizza, as far as BBQ he's pretty much disappointed with most things he's tried (him being southern and all).
Suggestions?
ISO Pumpkin Pancakes
Third! Not on the east side or valley. But definitely worth the drive. The service is great too. Oh and they have Lemon pancakes that I love also.
Lucky Boy in Pasadena: Can it be? Too much bacon?
battered or breaded? how are they at Top's, never been.
Lucky Boy in Pasadena: Can it be? Too much bacon?
i was going to post the whole 'that's a whole lot of bacon' thing because i had lucky boy's breakfast burrito for the first time. I do love bacon, but that thing was close to half of it. Really good, i felt incredibly guilty after eating it. I want to try the Gyro next time and their fried zucchinni. I love fried zucchini, but haven't found a good substitute to the place i used to go to in the valley.
Johnnie's Pastrami... A Disappointment
I agree with cagey. Yes, the prices are high but that's the way it is with everything these days isn't it? I think Johnnie's is pretty good. I like the fast service and atmosphere. Only once did i think it was kinda salty out of probably the fifty times I've been. Maybe it was better before I moved down to that area, but it still satisfies my cravings.
Coming to DC for business
wow, thanks for all the recommendations. we'll definitely try Corduroy. Didn't even bother to look it up!
Girls lunch in Pasadena?
Not quite pasadena, but south pas san marino-ish is Julienne's. So cute, garden like setting. http://www.juliennetogo.com/
Coming to DC for business
Chowhound from LA staying four nights for a conference....staying at the Four Points Sheraton, I believe near the convention center over on K street. Company's dime, but we've got a budget per person...I think it's around $25 a meal not including drinks.
Farm Boy vs. Pinkberry
Farm Boy is awesome! I love that I can do it myself. Mine always ends up being around $7 bucks though...but that's okay. I do enjoy the blueberry also. wish I lived closer.
Best Peruvian
I vote for Pollo Inka also! Can never go wrong with the Saltado there. I always have a hard time ordering though because everything they bring out looks so good. I've noticed that a couple of Farmers Markets there's been a Peruvian food vendor...I'm thinking Culver City and Santa Monica. Anyone know if it's any good?
ISO of the best Pizza in CC (or vicinity)
I've got tons of options in culver city, but haven't been really happy with the pizza situation. I've tried several and they've been so unremarkable (The Coop, Mama's, Lucias). I'm hoping there is one that's fairly close to Culver City and delivers. I'm a fan of Lamonicas in Westwood and Johnny's in WLA and Century City. But those take a little bit of effort to get to. I'm thinking more along carry out.
Fraiche, Culver City - Review
I went a couple weeks ago. My brother-in-law went to culinary school with the pastry chef and therefore knows Chef Travi too. I have to say that we were all underwhelmed. Maybe we ordered the wrong things, but none of our entrees were "great". I agree that it was above average, but only slightly and I was definitely expecting more. As far as service goes, not good at all. Our meal dragged on for close to three hours! Fraiche seems to get mixed reviews. I don't think I'll make an effort to go back. It's too bad too since I live within walking distance and the restuarant is beautiful.
Gelsons deli and salad bar
ah...see I work in Pasadena, live in Culver City. So i'm coming from there. I'm thinking of calling up the one in Century City. We're taking the park and ride from downtown culver. Just an idea to get gelsons. you know, and just eat out of their containers. but if you have any other suggestions for bowl food, they're more than welcome!
Vietnamese in Culver City
Oh great. I hope it's good. I posted recently asking for Pho on the that side of town.
Gelsons deli and salad bar
Does anyone know if they make the same sort of salads and sides at most of the Gelsons? I'm asking because I normally go down to the one in Pasadena for my lunch break and love the tomato and cheese thing they've got at the salad bar (kinda like caprese, but the cheese is a harder cheese) and I want to pick some up for Hollywood Bowl picnicing this weekend at a Gelsons that is closer. Weird question...I know. Thanks for the help though!
You know that show Ace of Cakes on the Food Network?
Well good luck to her. I think it all depends. My brother in law was "executive pastry chef" at Drago and he was not making very much at all. I think he could have made more flipping burgers at In and Out.
You know that show Ace of Cakes on the Food Network?
Oh, I've only seen it a couple of times. They're cakes are cool, but I can't believe there's a whole series on it. I was just looking at the Charm City Cakes website...and cakes start at $500! Yikes.
You know that show Ace of Cakes on the Food Network?
Does anyone know where I can go in LA where I can design my own cake like they do on the show? They use a lot of fondant over their cakes and I like how they can make them look kind of cartoon-y...
quirky coffeehouses
Just curious does synergy have wifi or free access computers? That's why I go over to Rumor Mill....as I don't have my own computer.
Tatin: Nice Westside Coffeehouse
Fatburger is on Sepulveda and Venice. I think it is the Hamburger Habit.
El Nopal on National Blvd.
Thanks for posting this. I live up the street from Nopal and I've been searching for a new taco (hard) place. I'll try gloria's next. I'm not a fan of Titos or Campos.
Best Breakfast Burritos
Ahhh!!! Okay, this is why I always see a huge line at Lucky Boy so early in the morning when I come into work. If I wasn't always so late everyday, I'd would have found out what all the fuss is. I'm gonna have to try it one day.
Westside Pho?
Pho 99! That's the one I go to when I visit my sister in Santa Monica. Le Saigon would be a little more accessible. I'm hoping there is one that's even closer to me over in Culver City. Thanks for the suggestions!
Westside Pho?
Looking for good pho on the west end.. Culver City, West LA, Venice. I know there's a place on Wilshire in Santa Monica who's name escapes me right now. But that's not really that convenient.
Restaurants you will defend no matter what anybody says...
I'll support it with you! Love their tri-tip and the waitress is always so nice.
Any recommendations for birthday party prix fixe menu in West LA?
I went to Aphrodisiac this weekend. It's on Santa Monica near Beverly Glen. They are also owned by the same people as Porterhouse Bistro. The prix fixe menu was $39, but it also included two drinks. I thought it was a really good deal. The food wasn't spectacular, but pretty good IMO.
L.A.'s BEST Calzone
Which one did you go to though? I've been to the Johnnies in CC and SM and the pizza tasted differently.
