Awesome gua bao in Rego Park!
It's $3.95 for two. I guess it isn't fair to compare it to Momofuku. I have had the gua bao at Temple Snacks in the Flushing Mall and thought Andy's was superior.
el jefe, what kinds of dishes did you order? There are two menus: a Chinese one and an Americanized one. I always order from the Chinese one and have enjoyed mostly everything, like the soup dumplings and the cumin lamb. They do seem to have off-nights, though, and while good, they're not as good as when they first opened.
Awesome gua bao in Rego Park!
I recently tried the gua bao from Andy's in Rego Park and it was AMAZING. The bread was so soft and fluffy, and the pork was so rich, meaty and flavorful. Yum. Way better than Momofuku's pork buns, plus the rest of the menu is pretty good, too. Delivery is also speedy on most nights. Just a note: It's listed as a "Taiwanese hamburger" on the menu.
Has anyone tried the new Korean place in Forest Hills?
It's called Green Sky and it's on Austin Street in that same complex with Ripe, Corfu et al. I grabbed a takeout menu last night and it's a bit limited. There's also a weird-sounding bulgogi burrito. Just wondering if anyone has eaten there yet?
Question on shabu shabu in Flushing
Where do you guys like to go for shabu shabu in Flushing? A friend recommended a spot but can't remember the name--she said it's right by the LIRR station on Main Street, on that block right across the street from the handball court. Do any of you know what she's talking about?

I am setting up a dinner for one vegetarian, one vegetable-averse carnivore (who has begrudgingly agreed to go to a vegetarian restaurant for the sake of the first diner) and two people who eat meat occasionally but prefer to eat mostly vegetables. Would Candle 79 or Pure Food & Wine be better? I know they specialize in different types of vegetarian cuisine, but the menus for both places look fantastic. Any recommendations? And does one have an edge over the other in terms of pleasing a carnivore?

My fellow New Yorker friends and I are going to spend three days in LA this September and I'm looking for suggestions on terrific LA eats that have no comparison in New York. We're open to all kinds of cuisine, but nothing too expensive or high-end. Some of the places we're considering are:
-Apple Pan, for the burgers (we've had In 'n Out and really like their burgers. Are Apple Pan's better?)
-Stan's Donuts (what's the most popular flavor?)
-Kogi taco trucks
-Philippe's, for the French Dip
-Grand Central Market
-Fugetsu-Do Confectionaries (I love mochi and read they have a good selection)
-Bulgarini (is this the best gelato?)
-Langer's Deli (is the pastrami better than Katz's in NYC?)

What to get at Le Bernardin?
My wonderful husband is taking me there tomorrow night for my birthday and the menu looks fantastic! Neither of us have been there before. Would you recommend the regular prix fixe or springing for the tasting menu? What are the best dishes in your opinion? Thanks!
Forest Hills—Has Casa de Elian closed?
I'd heard about this place awhile ago and went there on Saturday night to try it, but it was closed when we drove by at around 8pm. I just tried calling, too, and the number is not in service. Did we miss our chance to eat there?
Amai and Tafu closed--now where do I go??
Yeah, it's such sad news. I went by this morning to stock up on macaroons and mochi, but all they have left are the looseleaf teas and the matcha chocolates.
where to get sea salt caramel in the city?
I second the pretzel-covered sea salt caramels from Bespoke. They are excellent! Nunu Chocolates also sells relatively good hand-dipped salt caramels, but the shop is in Brooklyn.
Amai and Tafu closed--now where do I go??
My favorite spots for green-tea drinks and sweets are no more (well, Tafu is still open for one more day tomorrow), so now where can I go for lovingly made green-tea muffins, cupcakes and daifuku mochi? I am most sad about losing the mochi. Does anyone sell mochi as good as the ones that were available at Tafu?
Katsuno Japanese in Forest Hills
My husband and I ate there a few weeks ago and were impressed by the quality of the food. The sushi and sashimi were very fresh and the miso cod was pretty good (though not as good as the ones I've had at Lan and Nobu in Manhattan). We also liked the pickled cucumber appetizer we tried, and the waitress (I think she was the owner's wife?) was incredibly warm and attentive. I'd recommend it, but it is pricy.
Who sells LAFFA in Queens?
Pahal Zan on 71st Avenue in Forest Hills (right under the LIRR station platform) has awesome laffa pita.
Where to eat in Williamsburg?
El Almacen was great! I really liked the intimate bistro vibe and the food was terrific. My friend and I shared:
Ensalada de Remolacha-fresh and light spinach salad with manchego cheese, almonds, beets and a good tangy dressing
Corn on the cob-rich but not too heavy and slathered in chipotle mayo and parmesan
Chorizo tacos-if you like chorizo, you will like these, though they were a little salty
Braised short ribs-so tender and flavorful and served with delicious sweet potato mash
Avocado fries-loved the contrast of the crunchy exterior with the creamy avocado and became addicted to the spicy ketchup that was served with them
The desserts didn't appeal to us and we had some time before the concert, so we walked to Penny Licks. We'd never tried vegan desserts before and were wary, but we had a super-fudgy brownie topped with chocolate mousse and a white chocolate-covered pretzel and it was amazing. We thought it tasted like a "real" brownie with butter and eggs.

Someplace with entrees in the low $20s and under range would be good and I'm open to any cuisine: American, Indian, Thai, Mexican, Japanese. The concert starts at 8pm, so I think we're aiming to eat around 6pm to avoid being rushed.

I tried Xinjiangese food for the first time when I was in Shanghai last year and loved it. Are there any Xinjianese places in Queens (or other boroughs)? A Fan Ti in Flushing looks promising, but I read a thread that it's actually Chinese-influenced Korean dishes?
Momofuku Milk Bar Cookies?
I was there two weeks ago and the cookies were big, flat and crispy. I tried the Compost and the Marshmallow-Cornflake ones and didn't like either. I thought they were waaay too sweet and the massive amount of butter seemed to overwhelm the other flavors. I wasn't a huge fan of the pistachio cake, either (too dense) but did like the chocolate malt and root beer soft serve.
Opinions about Red Chopstick in Flushing?
I'm meeting friends there for dinner this Saturday. What should I expect? I haven't eaten a lot of Taiwanese food, so I don't have a real gauge for this type of cuisine. What are some recommended dishes? I'm willing to try anything! I know people tend to recommend Gu-Shine for Taiwanese food, but I read that Red Chopstick has a more welcoming interior. Is this true?
