Pork BBQ in Austin
We're good at ribs don't see much pulled pork. I've had it in Arkansas,Tennessee and Mississippi though, good stuff. We had a Red Hot and Blue for a while and I liked it alot. Seems like Whole Foods' pulled pork is okay. I go to the Gateway store but I'm sure they have it at the flagship too. It's quite easy to obtain anyway. Have you had it ssouth?
La Fogata on Burnet
Way worse location unfortunately. She told me the carwash guy wanted $1000 a month so she moved. Bandit. I dig her breakfast tacos.
Crispy Tacos?
Angie's carnitas tacos rock. They use the same thick tortillas for their table chips, which also rock. Yellow cheese though , definitely Tex-Mex. Amaya's is somehow related to Angies but I don't think they have carnitas. I only like the carnitas. Mighty scrumptiouschef doesn't like Angie's though....
In Honor of Pi(e) Day...
I've only had the chocolate at Monument Cafe, but it is crazy freaking good. Fudgy thick rich cream and the crust is pecans. Haven't been to Quack's but I will go anywhere for coconut. That being said Cuttie Pies on Burnet has an amazing coconut white chocolate pecan pie. I don't like the normal little pie "lets" very much and I think you have to order the whole pie. Around 17 bucks -- a steal. And Tootie Pies in the Arbor Walk has a wonderful coconut pie. Not cream-- like a chess or buttermilk but moist and with coconut. Expensive though 5 bucks for a small slice or like 35 for a huge pie. Their lunch deal for 10 dollars is a sandwich, piece of pie and drink, a good deal. For coconut cake la Madeline's is memorable.
"Supper" Barbecue?
You always get different answers with bbq. I get by Sam's every month and a half or so and always like the brisket. An old fashioned sandwich on white bread for 4.50 is a steal. They cook it to tender and smokiness, like about everywhere, differs. Atmosphere is amazing. I do try to park my car right in their doorway though....
Dallas to Austin Road Food
I like Robertson's for ham sandwiches. their ham is dry and tasty and they sell premade sandwiches. They have this pecan brittle from a company in Arkadelphia Arkansas that's really great. It comes in little bags and these buckets.
I tend to stop at Mikeska's at exit 300 in Temple. They smoke sirloins and it's pretty tasty. Buy a half pound and eat it with their nice homemade bread it's a nice lunch.
The best fruit kolaches (way better than the West places imo) are at Monica's in Jerrell. Really good bread and tons of fruit. The apricot are great. She makes a prune kolache --the filling is black-- strange to me but real tasty. It's one side of a gas station building they also operate. I'd call ahead and make sure they're open and not sold out.

Oops, Monica's shows closed on Sundays won't work for your trip sorry.
Feb. Texas Monthly - The Greatest BBQ story ever told
They were only closed for a week or two. Still putting out some of the best brisket in Austin bar none. Great sausage too. I don't have a taste for mutton. .There might be one or two people in line in front of you.
Suggestions for pre-theater dinner
We have to come down from north Austin. We like to take Burnet to beat the traffic and go to Asti or Hyde Park Bar and Grill. Real convenient for the Bass and okay for the Long Center and the Paramount or ACL. Lots of parking behind the center Hyde park is in.
Maoz coming to Triangle
Have been twice and love it. Better falafel than anywhere else (Sarah's I like alot too to give her a plug) really nice soft pita and tons of choices on the "toppings." it's really a little salad bar. Didn't miss any meat at all. Opens at 11:30.
Stiles Switch BBQ
I went Thursday night. Brisket was tender and of good quality but didn't have much taste from rub/spice or smoke. Nice people. Nice sausage. They didn't have any hot sauce said they were working on it. I might bring my own next time....
PhoNatic
Thanks! We could use some good pho without driving all the way over to Lamar. Pho Saigon is great.
DiMassey's Mediterranian Restaurant
I went in there twice and walked out both times. Once they ignored me and the other time there was (eerily) no staff present. I did read somewhere that the original DiMassi's were the new management and not the old management....
Any tips on a good restaurant open on Christmas night (day of Christmas)?
Din ho. I imagine Ho ho will be open too. Maybe First Chinese too.
Where to dine on thanksgiving??
First thing mentioned in the Chronicle article is the Driskill. I'll gladly malign them again for old times sake. What a disaster going there:

The Mediterranean Chef Cafe
Thanks ieat I liked it too. Hommus was excellent and baklava too. And the tabouli. We had the dolmas and the beef pie and the beet salad too (yogurt like tzatziki but with beet) and liked everything. 7.99 by the pound for everything so it got a bit expensive but still quite a find. They were so nice. Going back for turkish coffee and another baklava.
BBQ Beef Ribs
Sqwertz/Achtungpv thanks for the tip on Meuller. Went there today at 1245. Two people in line in front of me and that was about how it was running. Joined a guy chilling at a picnic table. He was finished. Said when he got there there was no line. Sausage first class, brisket pretty darn good, beef rib really awesome. Lots of pepper. Had driven by Franklins and saw like 200 people milling around. Didn't look at all like a line. They all had dirty jeans on some kind of club I suppose. Desert at la Patisserie 100 yards away--hell yes! Almond croissant awesome. Macarons awesome. Got to do my french guy impression : ) Am a very happy camper. South austin baby : )

Went by. Reggie was sitting out front. He introduced himself and shook my hand. I ordered the wing dinner. He recommended getting both the fries and the dirty rice. Said it would take 7 minutes .It did. 5 nice wing pieces three drums and two flappers. Tons of fries and dirty rice. Two pieces of thin buttered toast. Hot and good. Next time I'll try the fish or shrimp. He said he didn't have his boudin deilvery yet. Looks like afternoons then long hours Fri and Sat. Menu/hours attached. A little more than a mile off of 35 on Airport. A local character provided uh character. : )
Need opinions on 4-day BBQ-plus plan
Your plan and this whole thread are great. We like the steak at Cooper's, as well as the chops which were already mentioned. The steaks are kind of backyard bbq like but they are different from the rest of what you'll find on your trip. The beans are good too. And free, free is good. They make a pecan cobbler that just rocks. Sounds odd but the stuff is crazy good. Black's has lots and lots of sides, some are pretty good. Luling has the sausage. Better than anybody's in my opinion. You don't mention Sam's. Hard to do a bbq tour without seeing Sam's.
Chili Dogs
Spec's is now $2.79 and has a killer dog inside it, decent chili and cheese, onions and jalapenos if you want them. maybe not the best but half the price of any competitor and really big.

Ann's cakes on Spicewood has a great chocolate cake. Pretty reasonable too I believe. You can buy a slice and check it out.
What happened to Amaya's?!?
Went there last night (Friday) around 6. Big happy crowd of very diverse diners. Huge staff zipping around providing fast service and keeping everyone happily refilled and everything clean. Didn't look at the restrooms though. Place is bright not at all like the old Bombay Bicycle Club we used to idle away many drinking hours in years ago. A takeout area in the back made that look efficient. I see some family pack takeout options on their website that could feed a group at home in a pinch.
Had the tacos. They are very good. Fresh fried softish shells like Angie's (I heard the two places had a common heritage but my server didn't know anything about that) No carnitas though. The chips weren't the same thick fresh fried great ones like Angie's either. They seemed a little better than the bagged ones that have become so common though. I'm guessing they fry them there. Nice cold and pretty spicy red table sauce.
Good rice and beans and those tacos are good. A very good “yellow cheese and iceberg” alternative for the horde of dingy Mex semi-chains in Austin. And a quick in/out for that part of town. I don’t know about the margaritas.

Taco More is still Great
Alhambres at Taco More (and Chuy's bakery and La Fogata on Burnet) are minced beef and bacon with peppers onions tomatoes and I suppose cilantro, covered in cheese. I've seen the skewered kind, bacon on those too where I had them.

Taco More is still Great
I saw a post on a food blog waxing over their goat broth. Haven't tried it though but I guess it's a pretty authentic place if they serve that. AS far as the ceviche I'm guessing tilapia just because it seems to be everywhere. I'll have to ask. In the last batch of alhambres we got the bacon wasn't ask cooked as before, more like what you normally see with this type of minced alhambres than before. Next time I'm going to ask for the bacon more cooked. In the ones we got at Chuy's bakery the bacon was too uncooked for me. I was thinking you were the one that didn't eat pork. I guess not.
Taco More is still Great
Went by there today. Got a large ceviche for 10 dollars. A 32 ounce styrofoam cup nearly full! Tiny fish and tons of veggies. Really great. And an order of alhambres. 8 dollars. Enough to make 15 tacos. Creamy green salsa from the salsa bar was pretty hot. Not creamy green salsa with avocados too. And got some onions with cut habaneros. Definitely fiery. Just wanted to remind everyone of this wonderful place.

"Stuffed" ----Cajun Meat Market
Thanks twyst you finally got me going out there. Picked up some very nice Shrimp etoufee and cornbread plus some Nachitoches meat pies to bake later. I miss those meat pies : )
New Latin American Bistro in my north central hood - Al Sur
We ate there tonight. Ceviche was very good. Three tostadas with a portion of nice white fish ceviche and lots of avocado. The chicken empanadas rocked. Shredded chicken red with I suppose adobo. The lady said they make a sandwich with the same chicken. Liked the steak too especially for 15 dollars. Not alot of customers at 545 although a few came in as we were leaving. Crepes were just okay. The strudel was actually more of an empanada, although round. Great apple flavor. Nice ice ceam too. Coffee disappointed.
Chago's
Went there for lunch yesterday. Two lunch specials and a small side of sweet plantains (yum) was 14.00. Fried pork with some nice peas and rice. Talked to the owner's daughter while the order was prepared. She said they have live music on the weekend and dancing. Am really taken with this place.
