Pittsburgh recommendations needed AGAIN by Cleveland Hound

1. Japanese the only place to go is Umi in Shadyside. If you are adventurous go for the Omakase, if you are budgetless do the Omakase at the Sushi bar. Amazing black cod and for wife who doesn't like "raw" their teriyaki dishes are also worth mentioning.

2. Korean BBQ is few and far between here. Sushi Kim in the Strip District seems to get the most credit. There is also a place in Bloomfield called Young Bin Kwan (sp?) but it is more Korean-Chinese BBQ to please a larger number of customers Sushi is NOT recommended here.

3. Greek: Gyros are pretty much the best of Greek Pittsburgh has to offer except when there are Greek food festivals during the summer. There is a place in Sewickley (about 25 min north but a cute town for an afternoon) called Little Athens, they also have a great brunch. Mike & Tony's is the spot for street style gyros on east carson street in the South Side. But most here fuze mediterranean and greek so it's not always authentic.

Wings! Where are the best in Pittsburgh?

Have to say after reading this thread I took a minute to check out some of the wing places last week with some out of town guests from Buffalo. Not that where they come from makes them "experts" but here's what the general consensus was Pittsburgh has great wings:

1. Wiggy's (Honey BBQ Cajun enough said delicious)
2. Wings, Suds and Spuds (can't really go wrong with this combo. Classic wing joint with cheap beer. BIG hit.)
3. Pizza Sola (these are baked AND crispy. peach habanero and rosemary were hits and they make homemade blue cheese dressing which you don't often find in pizza chains)
4. Mad Mex (we did both chicken and tofu in their SanFran sauce and they were pretty awesome, the buffalo was a little boring)
5. Kaya (jerk flavored paired perfectly with much needed tiki drinks)

Pizza in Pittsburgh

Forno and Dinette are worth the adventure and I'm sure you will note they will become great go-to for neapolitan style pizzas. Il Pizzaiola is also worth mentioning in this category as they serve a fantastic pie as well as use some of the most premium ingredients available.

I was surprised you categorized Pizza Sola as "drunk pizza" because it is the closest thing Pittsburgh has to Real NY Style Pizza. Alas I wish they used the oversized pepperoni, but the thin crust and tomatoes are the real deal (not to mention their sausage) and they don't use the Pittbsburgh blend of cheese. Agreed, their whole pies are much better but that is typically the case with a slice shop, even in NY.

Aiello's, Mineos, Bedo's, Vincents, Fioris are all neighborhood joints and seem to have gained loyaty points over the years from being in highly populated regions of the city. With any of them you really can't go wrong, just depends on what style you prefer which MrChopin has done a great job of breaking down.

whiskey in pittsburgh

This might be a little late, but Embury in the Strip District (below the Firehouse Lounge) has just about every small batch bourbon and whiskey you can think of. Their staff is knowledgeable and the cocktails they come up with are hands down the best cocktails in Pittsburgh, actually they could compete with many of the cocktail programs around the country.
