Gotta give Perla some love

Thanks for the report, other reports pretty much criticized the place. Your report makes me want to try it, for sure.

a place with the most intersting "not traditional" cupcakes ?

I like Takahachi bakery for its Maron pie pastry ( chestnut), also for yuzu tart and even its sandwiches. For cupcakes, Billy's also in Tribeca is amazing. I especially like their banana cupcakes and pumpkin cupcakes.

Ootooya japanese Teishoku restaurant now opened

On the recommendation of another CH'er E Eto, I went to Ootoya. They have over 100 restaurants in Tokyo ( 200 in Japan), Osaka, Kyoto, Hokkaido, others in Singapore, Taiwan, Bangkok, and many more. It is described as Teishoku dining , or homestyle Japanese dining. They are now offering both the luncheon "set menu", and a dinner menu. There is nothing fancy here, it certainly reminded me of many restaurants I've been to in Japan. Just good food of all kinds. Char grilled fish ( salmon, mackerel and aji), Pork curry, veggie curry with noodles. The noodles are handmade, home made tofu dishes, they have pressed salmon and pressed mackerel sushi, shiokara, many chicken dishes, yakitori grilled in front of you. They have a few different desserts and all the green tea you want.
They presently do not have a liquor license but one is coming soon. The luncheon menu is not expensive and can be ordered for dinner. We had 2 sets ( katsy curry and veggie udon curry) it came with a kind of egg custard ( like chawanmushi but nothing in it), miso soup, pickles, rice,) we also ordered the fresh tofu , and an order of ika shiokara. The total bill was only $57. The dinner menu is more expensive, but "sets" are really the way to go here. Here is a link I found describing the food.

it is located on W. 18th St. just off 5th Ave.

15 East alternative?

I agree with your recs, but the OP didn't mention when his or her birthday is, If it is this week, forget about Brooklyn Fare and Kyo Ya.
I'll add to the list, Kano Yama, Brushstroke ( kaiseki or sushi), Sushi Azabu, Jewel Bako. Soto

Brazilian Restaurants

Plataforma Tribeca or the one in the 40's I recommend. The SwissAir poster, did tell you "obrigado" that means thank you in Portuguese, so you can always say that. The Queens mention of Greenfield's, my comment there is , it was good 20 years ago, it has gone way way way downhill.

$ 1.00 oyster happy hour in NYC.....Any such thing??

Mermaid and 5 Points

Best Pasta Dish of 2012

I don't recall if the lasagna I had last year at Osteria Morini was Lasagna Verde,or just lasagna, but it was the best lasagna I have had outside of Italy. Delicious

Great fried green tomatoes

I,ll try puleo,s and compare. I didn't try them there cause I figured puleo,s was a chain and FGT couldnt be good there. I figured their food compared to Calhoun,s bbq also a chain and not great. But I like the idea of 3 different gravies. river stone in Townsend is worth checking out the FGT.

Kaiseki not to exceed roughly $150 per person for 4

Kyo ya is the best. But I don't believe they have a private room.its more of a private area ,not enclosed, like kaiseki in Japan

Great Food near Ground Zero

Jung sik is just a few blocks from ground zero

HAND PULLED NOODLE SHOP 东方兰州拉面 (SHENG WANG) YET ANOTHER TO HIGHLY CONSIDER IN YOUR QUEST FOR GOOD CHINESE NOODLES

Potato and filled with meat

Weekend lunch w/ baby

Azabu is too small, wouldn't have been good with a baby

Dish recommendations at Tanoreen!!

Yes that is correct it is kanafa. again,I urge anyone who enjoys middle eastern food to go the the Arab and Turkish section of Paterson. It is the real deal.

What to eat at Recette (New Menu??)??

Definitely try the scallops, and also the sweetbreads.

Jungsik Review + Photos

Thanks for the update. I haven't been to Jung sik for a couple of months. I'd like to try some new dishes there. Normally pork belly has much more flavor than the jowel, but smoked I imagine can work well with jowel. Hopefully I can get to Jung Sik soon.

Ushiwakamaru -- re-review (long)/new thread

Great post covering the many aspects of eating sushi at Ushiwakamaru,15 East,et al.. I will try Ushi again, either with a friend who is a regular or perhaps with a beautiful woman. I agree that without a reservation, the greeting can be cold.whereas,i have had room made for me at 15 East, Jewel Bako, Kanoyama and more.As for the rice being a bit too warm at Ushiwakamaru , I didn't notice. However, if you ever try Sasabune, you will see rice that is way too warm. So warm it fallas apart if you use your fingers to pick it up. the chef tells you to use chopsticks, which is absurd.Sushi is meant to hold I your hand. As far as the big mug of beer chef Hideo pours, you explained all that and that it is only 5 bucks. so I understand his shtick now. The second chef, with the shaved head,i believe came from sushi gari or nobu ,as far as I recall my conversation with him. prices do vary at omakase places, for various reasons, that we will never figure out. My solo bill is quite often in the 200 dollar range. I ate at 15 east with a pretty woman who the chef knows and my bill was 200 for two. At jewel Biko it varies greatly, and I've had some omakase meals with many pieces,at remarkably low price. Kanoyamo,is different than the other places,in that he itemizes every piece of fish. The bill is always high.occasionally I get comped a dish. The new room with the oyster area is much more conducive to enjoying an omakase meal than years ago, when you had to eat in the noisy crowded sushi bar up front. I hear ,Kanoyama is expanding again,so it will even be better. Nobu-San is an artist, and is a pleasure to eat his omakase. Kanoyama has a huge selection of fish from Japan .also a great oyster selection.
I always offer to buy the sushi chefs beers,it is amazing how that helps make the meal better.
Also, speaking some Japanese gets you the respect of chef, figuring you appreciate his talent. They do seem to know when a customer appreciates ,the art of sushi making.
15 east is my favorite sushi place. Brushstroke and kanoyama and jewel bako are my go to places .

Great new sushi restaurant in Tribeca

Thanks for explaining

HAND PULLED NOODLE SHOP 东方兰州拉面 (SHENG WANG) YET ANOTHER TO HIGHLY CONSIDER IN YOUR QUEST FOR GOOD CHINESE NOODLES

Thank you for the explanation. I love peel noodles at Sheng Weng

Best BBQ in Knoxville area

Dead End BBQ is definitely the best. The pork and the chicken are amazing.no one else comes close

Great fried green tomatoes

I had fried green tomatoes in several restaurants in Knoxville and vicinity.the best I had was at the Riverstone in Townend. These were crisp not greasy and delicious. This is a good lunch spot right before you get to great smokey. Mtn natl park. Calhouns had horrible greasy fried green tomatoes

Lena Latin Grill....certainly my favored spot for coffee BEST ESPRESSO

Speaking of Spring St. I like Ceci Cela espresso and latte, and i love their pastries.
Roasting Plant Coffee Co. on Orchard St, has good espresso

Recette - Charming, Delicious, Excellent All-Around

last time i ate there, we picked some and the chef surprised with two of his choice.

Pushcart Coffee and Malt and Mold, two new nice places on East Broadway

Try Murray's Cheese. I'm sure you can find something that meets your taste in cheese

Best Indian restaurant in Manhattan

Tamarind is probably most expensive. Possibly the most inconsistent too. It is surely not the best. I have no favorite,

Elk, Boar, Kangaroo and Antelope Seven Spring Food and Wine

I have yet to try that place, but it sounds interesting. I'm surprised those meats as burgers were not very dry , since they are very lean meats. But you enjoyed them , so maybe they prepare them special.

Noah's Ark and Bialys, a bit of history still found on the Lower East Side

When you order tongue at katz's , they ask if you want the tip or the less lean fattier part. I like to get both. The corned beef and pastrami , juicy is the only way to go. Their Philly Cheese steak is actually good too. The garlic wurst is something i always get there, i have them slice it , no sandwich. Also the round knish is much better than the square, But they try to talk to you out of it, because the cook is too lazy to heat it up. The french fries are terrible at Katz's, unless you get them immediately after cooking, not under the heat lights. nathan's french fries are my favorite.
As far as egg mc muffin goes, i get nauseous thinking about that. Bacon, cheese and egg is a popular sandwich, especially on a toasted roll. Ive never seen it on a bialy ,, in any case , I haven't had that sandwich in a decade.

Dish recommendations at Tanoreen!!

I had many appetizers. The hummus was pretty good. The stuffed mushrooms were not bad and the chicken cigars were excellent. Salad, stuffed mushrooms, babaganoush, eggplant salad, cauliflower with cheese, and cheese sticks,a few other things were good too. The ground kefta with tahina and a layer of potatoes was my main course. It was a bit too lemony and the meat too dry. I tasted the lamb shank, i forget the name of the dish, but that was very good. There was one dessert, like a type of cheese cake , that was the best dessert. I hated the pistachio ice cream. The baklava was good, and the coconut cake was good. The arabic coffee was excellent. I lived in the middle east for a couple of years, and this coffee holds up to what you get there. The bill was high for Middle Eastern in Brooklyn, $65 a person without tip. The chef and owner I was told is Palestinian, which is the style of cooking I like, that and Syrian which is pretty much the same.
However, if you like this type of food, I recommend a trip to Main St. in Paterson NJ, it is like vein gin the Middle East, Much more so than Atlantic Ave. The food is simple there, but very delicious, pretty much at all of the restaurants I've tried there.

"Tommy Lasagna"??...ugh...Irving Place area needs better restaurants! (long)

Yes yes Paul and Jimmy's , they used to make a good zuppa di peace

Great new sushi restaurant in Tribeca

As far as Ushiwakamaru goes, I have friends that love the place. I went 3 times, once with the 2nd chef , and he had a cold, so it was a turnoff. Second time I had the owner. I offered to buy him a beer , and he filled a huge pitcher size mug with beer. Should I have been insulted that he was being greedy or taking advantage. Or is that just his style with everyone? Also, the 3rd time I went, he was not friendly, seemed a bit uppity. But I'm willing to go again , just wondering your thoughts on Ushiwakamaru.

Great new sushi restaurant in Tribeca

15 East is better as far as variety and quality of tuna especially. Ichimura- san has some dishes that are better . The coziness of Ichimura place is preferred over 15 East. But I love 15 East, and I have long time strong relationship with the chef there. I do not like Yasuda, except for the eel
