I will be visiting Montreal and Quebec City in early October. Food is definitely one of my main focuses. I generally like places that have slightly adventurous food, but are on the less pretentious side. To give examples I am most interested in Au Pied De Cochon in Montreal and also think Joe Beef looks interesting.
Anyway, I can't help, but be drawn to Aux Anciens Canadiens in Quebec City. I do enjoy a bit of kitsch on occasion and was interested in eating some sort of game. So it seems like it might fit the bill. It also reeks of tourist trap. So I am looking for some feedback as to whether I can actually get a decent meal there that might be in an amusingly cheesy setting or am I just setting myself up for awfulness.
Other tips for Montreal and especially Quebec City are also of interest. I keep seeing Panache and Laurie Raphael pop up, but they do look a little too frou frou (well LR does anyway, Panache looks like it might be interesting, but the name just sounds so much like a restaurant at a Doubletree).
